From the Desk of Father Ed: Dear Parishioners, Once again we have arrived at this wonderful Season of Advent. This weekend begins the first Sunday of Advent. The two dominant themes throughout the season are the second and first coming of Jesus. The season of Advent begins by focusing on Jesus’ return at the end time when He will come in His glory. The season of Advent concludes with the emphasis on Jesus’ first coming, that is, the celebration of Christmas. This weekend our readings point to the end time, the promise of our Lord’s return to earth. He will not come in a hidden way as He did on Christmas Day but rather He will come in His Glory for all to see. Jesus gives us a parable in the Gospel this weekend to help us understand and to prepare for His second coming. The parable begins with a plea, “Be watchful. Be alert!” The owner of the home in the parable left for some traveling. Before leaving he placed his servants in charge of his household and gave them work to do. The servants do not know when the owner of the house will return from his travels. Therefore they must stay alert and be faithful to the task that has been assigned to them. They must stay awake and be watchful for when the homeowner returns. Our Lord gives us this parable to help us remain faithful and prepared for when He returns. We too do not know the day or the hour when He will return. We are asked to work out our salvation with the time that has been given to us. We need to stay awake, to be watchful, and alert. In order for us to do this we need God’s help, that is, His grace. Advent is so special because our Father in Heaven freely pours out His grace upon us. He wants us to be ready for Him and to use the time that He has given to work at growing in holiness through a life of prayer and virtue. A prerequisite to receiving the abundant Advent graces is the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Going before the Priest and confessing our sins opens up for us the spiritual doors of the soul so that God’s graces may fill us, strengthen us, and heal us. Advent is a special time of grace upon grace. Parish Life: This Friday is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of The Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a Holy Day of Obligation, which requires all Catholics to attend Mass that day. It is always a privilege for us to gather as children of the Father during Mass. Each Mass that we attend an infinite amount of graces are poured out to us. I look forward to sharing with all of you the Eucharist this Friday as we give honor to Our Blessed Mother. Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us, Father Ed, Pastor
