Former Texas Governor John B. and wife Nellie Connally called Picosa Ranch home throughout his tenure as the Governor of Texas, Secretary of the Navy under President Kennedy and Secretary of the Treasury under President Nixon. During his time in the political arena, “Big John” Connally hosted a glittering coterie of world leaders, movie stars and dignitaries at the ranch. Guests included President and Mrs. Nixon, President Johnson and family, Nelson and Happy Rockefeller, President Ford and family and more. Connally’s presence is still felt in many areas around the property and memorabilia from his days in office still remain at the ranch.

The Kowalskis acquired Picosa Ranch in the mid-1990s and have maintained it as a working operation; raising cattle, horses and exotic game. Hunting is at the core of this property. The 8,200-square-foot luxurious main house features four bedrooms, seven bathrooms and three half-baths, a dining room that comfortably entertains up to 16 people, a top-of-the-line country kitchen with walk-in refrigerator, grand main living area, den and library.

The richly appointed master bedroom boasts his and her separate bath suites complete with a Jacuzzi tub in the ladies suite. The 800-square-foot sunroom connects to the master suite and features antique stained glass windows and a cozy fireplace. The library sits at the top of the historical wrought iron staircase overlooking the great room. The South Range Lodge was once a barn on Governor Connally’s cattle ranch. It has been fully renovated to provide you with the ultimate in comfort and style. Directly beyond the fire pit, outside the South Range Lodge lies the luxurious lagoon-style pool and lounging area as well as six finely appointed suites.

Step outside to the attached wrap around porch and relax in a rocking chair overlooking the captivating scenery, take a dip in the enticing pool or enjoy ranch activities. The suites are the ideal guest quarters when hosting your annual family reunion, over-the-top event or just having friends out for the weekend to hunt and enjoy the ranch!


An extraordinary feature of Picosa Ranch is the luxurious lagoon-style pool located at the South Range Lodge. A swim up bar and walk down eating area ensure everyone will enjoy the hours spent lounging, basking in the Texas sun and catching up with loved ones. The pool is surrounded with native flagstone and lush landscaping.

The Pit features a full outdoor kitchen and spacious eating area. The 1,900+/- square foot metal roof pavilion boasts a spacious flagstone deck and provides seating for up to 40 between tables, bar seating and benches.

The Pit is set down into the ground giving you a unique eye-level view of the pool and swimmers. The full kitchen includes a cooktop, fryers, coolers and plenty of room to prepare meals outside. The entire area is outfitted with top-of-the-line technology. Three large flat-screen televisions are ideal for watching the game, a movie under the stars or even the kids favorite shows. The surround sound system is also a great way to listen to your favorite music while you’re enjoying the outdoors.


The ranch currently runs a 120-head heard of Santa Gertrudis, Black Angus and Longhorn cattle. It is home to cattle, horses and exotic animals including: Zebras, Oryx, Addax, Waterbuck, Blackbuck, Elk, Eland and more. You can easily find them on a photo safari or when touring the property on bicycle, polaris or even horseback.
