Picky Eaters
“It is a task to ensure that kids eat everything served to them”
One of the major concerns for any parent is the eating habits of their kids, especially pre-
schoolers. For some parents, it is a task to ensure that their kids eat up everything served to
them for breakfast, lunch or dinner. But should you compromise with the nutrient intake of
your child just because he/she doesn’t eat well? In order to help prevent meal time battles
with your kids and ensure that they eat the food served; visit the Children’s health section at
Apollo Clinics.
Set A Routine: It is important to set a routine and provide meals and snacks at the same
time every day. You may offer a glass of milk or 100 per cent fruit juices along with a meal
but ensure not to give them anything before the meal or as they may feel full due to the
intake of juices throughout the day.
Try New Foods: Kids are always interested in variety and thus as a parent you should not
hesitate to try new foods. Add veggies to the dish to make it healthy as well as colourful.
This is a great way to gain the attention and appetite of your children.
Make it Fun: Children never like boring food. So try making the veggies interesting. When
serving broccoli or other vegetables, provide dips or sauces to make it taste better. Also cut
vegetables in different shapes using shape cutters to make it fun.
Take Your Child’s Help: Take the help of your kids while preparing their meals. Try to
include them whenever possible and do consider their choice. Ask them to choose fruits or
vegetables while buying them. It makes them feel responsible and as they selected the food,
they will eat it.
Do Not Force: Yes! Do not pressurize your child to finish everything all the time. Instead
serve smaller portions as it is easier for him/her to eat and offer second helpings if they
want. If they do not eat properly, compensate it with fruit juices and milk. However, the
objective here is to inculcate healthy eating habits in our kids.
Minimize Distractions: Do not encourage kids to prolong their mealtimes. Try to minimize
distractions by turning off the television and keeping games away while they eat. This helps
to keep your child focused on what he/she is eating.
Your child’s nutrition could be a worrying problem but with a little medical advice and
patience, you can ensure that your children get balanced nutrition.
