Ol’ Ben’s Sentiments about OurNation’s Official Bird

Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders

The Much Loved BirdHere’s a bit of history and

trivia that you can bring to yourThanksgiving throw down.

This particular holiday is theprecursor to Christmas and sofrom Thanksgiving to New Yearsmost people socialize more byattending family gatherings, going to church, communityevents, etc.

While someone is wrestlingthe turkey into the oven orpreparing to drop birdinto boiling hot oil tobe fried (actually, this is really goodserved this way),think about howclose the WildTurkey came tobeing designatedas our country’sofficial bird.

Well, that’s if ol’Ben Franklin had his wayback when he was busy

helping create theUnited States ofAmerica.

History recordsthat our foundingfather did notparticularly care too much forthe Bald Eagle as a choice torepresent our new fledglingnation. We can assume that Bengave in when he realized that

more of his colleagueswanted to designate the

Eagle instead of theNorth America WildTurkey.

On the nextpage there is areprint of Mr.F r a n k l i n ’ s

personal letter tohis daughter.

So, as we all eitherstand in a line at a

restaurant or sittingaround the family dinner table

to give thanks thisholiday season, remember that theturkey barelyescaped beingrecognized by ourcountry as theofficial bird.

And even though, we kind ofsee what ol’ Ben meant in hiscomparisons, we are still gratefulthat it is the turkey that graces thetable during holiday feasts.

Ol’ Ben’s Sentiments about OurNation’s Official Bird continued

“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had notbeen chosen the Representative of our Country. He isa Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get hisLiving honestly. You may have seen him perched on

some dead Tree nearthe River, where, toolazy to fish for himself,he watches the Labourof the Fishing Hawk;and when that diligentBird has at length takena Fish, and is bearingit to his Nest for theSupport of his Mateand young Ones, the

Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

“With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case butlike those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbinghe is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he isa rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than aSparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of theDistrict. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblemfor the brave and honest Cincinnati of America whohave driven all the King birds from our Country . . .

“I am on this account not displeased that the Figureis not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like aTurkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison amuch more respectable Bird, and withal a true originalNative of America . . . He is besides, though a littlevain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitateto attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who shouldpresume to invade his Farm Yard with a Red Coat on.”

Letter from the Publisher...An Awful Lot to be Thankful For

Follow-up onMulti MillionDollar Vase

We heard from one of ourcolleagues who specializes inAsian and Oriental antiquities.June Hastings of The CheshireCat Gallery located in CameronVillage Shopping Center neardowntown Raleigh, NC emailedus a bit more insight into theworth of that little Chinese vasewe featured last week.

J u n ewrote us“FYI: Oneof thereasons the Chinese vasecommanded so much money isthat it is reticulated. Rare to findnot broken and in polychromevases like that one.”

We can’t reiterate howimportant it is to get professionalopinions on any item that you ownor have inherited or even areconsidering purchasing in orderto know exactly what you have orhope to purchase.

No matter where I’ve gone thisyear or who I’ve spoken with outthere, I’ve heard the samegrumblings from so many that thisyear has been hard on so manyfronts. It has been a difficult yearfor just abouteveryone. ButThanksgivingkicks off thestart of theH o l i d a yS e a s o nreminding usall how manythings weshould bethankful for.

Like loyaldogs whodrool all overyour pants leg while sitting downto turkey dinner.

Like being able to wave to yournext door neighbor and know thatthey are healthy and OK.

Like having a quiet afternoonto either catch up on reading, gofishing or take a nap.

Like having friends over toyell and holler with whilewatching football games.

Like opening the refrigeratordoor to see leftovers.

Like already dreading Mondaya f t e rThanksgiving inhaving to beback on the job.Heck, even tohave a job!

Like beingextremely gladthat yourholiday trip wasmade by carinstead offlying anywhereand beinggroped by some

overzealous TSA agent.Like hearing Grandma and

Grandpa’s cheery voice on theother end of your cell phone.

Like the cat who patientlywaits for everyone to leave thekitchen before hopping up ontothe kitchen countertop to drag a

wing off the turkey platter.Like the fact that you pulled on

your winter coat for the first timeto wear and discover a $20 billshoved down deep into a pocketcompletely forgotten.

Like the unexpected email youget from a loved one serving inthe Middle East who tells you his/her unit made it in safely frompatrol.

Like the comfort emanatingfrom a fire burning in the woodstove.

Yes, there are a few things thatwe each can be thankful for thisyear. It just takes a moment toreflect back and decide what ourblessings were that we might havetaken for granted.
