Rake up fallen leaves and either place them on the compost or pile them up to make leaf mould, burn or bin any perennial weeds or debris that shows signs of fungal infection. This is the best time of the year to take hardwood cuttings and collect any berries from trees and shrubs for seed sowing.Lift and store dahlias, glodioli and summer flowering bulb. Lift and divide rhubarb.Finish off planting spring bedding for next year. Sow sweet peas for next year under cover.Lift and store the reminder of your tender perennials and dahlia tubers and tender summer - flowering bulbs.Start to prepare the ground for planting bare rooted stock for next month.Plant garlic before the weather gets too cold.Finish planting autumn onion sets. Also, sow broad beans but cover them with cloches.Lift parsley and mint and pot to put on the window sill.Tidy up the pond before the water gets too cold to handle, reduce the feeding of fish now the days are getting shorter and the fish are becoming less active and remove any tender plants.

Autumn is well and truly upon us, with some trees beginning to drop their leaves while others turn a lovely gold and russet brown. Winter chills are in the air as farmers struggle to bring in the last few crops as the days get ever shorter. Thankfully, the drought that caused so much damage to some farmers in spring was superseded by rain in early summer, allowing others to produce a harvest that was at least on a par for quality if not better than last year’s crops, according to The National Farmers Union. (8th September 2011)To be spared a potential disaster is of course a cause for much relief , for at a time when both jobs and markets are uncertain and prices are high due to inflation, it ’s a relief to know that a poor cereal harvest won’t make a diff icult situation any worse. Sadly, many other countries aren’t so fortunate! Indeed, tens of thousands of people have already died after what is said to be East Africa’s worse drought for 60 years, with the United Nations estimating that 12 million people are in direct need of humanitarian assistance right now across East Africa (Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and Djibouti) with 750,000 people at risk of imminent death in Somalia alone. Naturally these problems are vast and complex and no one is suggesting that there is an easy answer, other than to simply support governments, charities and relief organisations as they struggle to ease the situation and come up with a long term solution. I t does however encourage us to be thankful for the many good t h i n g s t h a t we en joy and to ‘ coun t our b l e s s i n g s ’ r a t he r t h an t ake t h i n g s , a s we t end to do, fo r g r an ted . possible, as well as remembering in prayer all those who are in need and less fortunate than ourselves. To this end I’d like to encourage you to join us as we celebrate harvest either at Necton (where we shall also be celebrating the completion of our tower project and God’s good provision through the kind and generous support of villagers and grant making bodies) or at South Pickenham where we will be joined by the Watton Silver Band. I’d also very much like to encourage you to come to our harvest auction which will be held on the evening of Monday 3rd at Necton Church School where all the profits will go to Tearfund and directly support those whose terrible plight we have been discussing.

Yours as ever, Stephen Thorp

T h e D e a t h o f G e o r g e I VThe public saw little of the King during his last years but, thanks to political problems, this time was anything but peaceful. He quarrelled constantly with his Prime Minister, Wellington, and finally in March 1829 summoned his chief ministers to Windsor where he lectured them for six hours on a number of subjects, mainly the need to uphold the Protestant faith. His technique of persuasion included tears, kisses, brandy, sips of water, threats of abdication, pleas for divine assistance and a wish to retire to Hanover. At the end he dismissed them all from office! A few hours later, realising he no longer had a government, all were reinstated. All this hysteria sapped his energy and he never really recovered his health; his heart was failing and by the following April he began to suffer a series of minor strokes and even refused to meet Mrs Fitzherbert, his first love. He died at Windsor Castle in the small hours of the 26th June 1830. Thomas Creevy, Member of Parliament for Thetford and a life-long supporter, wrote “Poor Prinny is really dead and on a Saturday too”. Sunday would have been much more appropriate. Yet few people mourned his passing.Wellington noticed a miniature glittering on his sovereign’s breast and found it to be a likeness of Maria Fitzherbert. It was buried with him in the vault at Windsor and in her house at Brighton a grey haired widow wept bitterly when she heard of this. The new King William IV was the third son of George III and Queen Charlotte and born in 1765.

Page 19: Pickenhams' Periodical

Early on he was aimed for the navy. His relationship with his parents lacked the usual warmth,he was never a favourite son perhaps because with fifteen children their love was rather thinly spread and he was only the third son. With the family, court etiquette was rigidly adhered to. For instance, sons were not permitted to sit in their parent’s presence, a restriction which made it difficult to have a meal in their company.Until 1772 William was brought up in the same nursery as his elder brothers. Then he and his younger brother Edward were sent to Kew Green where two governors supervised their education; General Bude, a Swiss who was an expert on the flavour of tobacco and had an addiction to anchovies, and Dr John Majendie, known as a rather ‘stiff’ clergyman, not a pair to encourage knowledge in rather lively boys.

With no August Meeting we did have a trip to Peter Beales and saw all the different rose bushes and colours, which were lovely. We also had a nice meal booked there and we had a good afternoon. We had our Annual outing on 5th August, a lovely day in Cambridge. For our September Meeting our speaker was Mrs Mary Miller, with two other ladies calling themselves ‘The Windmill Ringers’. She spoke about all the different bell sounds and notes.

They had two bells in each hand, Mary said they would play some pieces of music and it sounded lovely; I think we all enjoyed it. We then had our coffee break, which our bell ringers well deserved. Our competition was won by Kay Tracey for the best ornamental bell. The Speaker for October 11th meeting is being arranged. Sheila Warner presented June Savoury with a lovely pot plant and card from all of us since June and her husband were celebrating their Golden Wedding on 9th September 2011, congratulations. VW

South Pickenham Parish Council

The PC held their second meeting under the new format on Friday 16th September @ 6.00 p.m. in the Church.

• Nick Padwick was co-opted onto the council, so completing the requisite number of councillors.

• Councillor Pitt was thanked for arranging for a replacement village sign, replacing the one which was stolen in July.

• Despite rising charges for electricity etc, it was decided to keep the precept at the same rate as in the previous years i.e. £1,000. One of the main costs is the lighting, which is funded by the parish and no longer by Breckland and also insurance costs to cover the lights themselves.

The next meeting will be on Friday December 9th at 6.00 p.m. in the SP Estate offices. It would be good to see more people who are interested in their village attending but, if in the meantime, you have any concerns or wish to speak to any of the councillors, please contact them direct and they will be happy to help.
