An evening with the Virtuoso Teacher
Faber Music combined the launch of Paul Harris’ The Virtuoso
Teacher with a celebration marking 2,500,000 worldwide sales
of Paul’s Faber Music titles at an event on 15th March at Faber’s
London offices. There was a great turn out for the event with
around 60 supporters from various stages of Paul’s working
life and representatives from local retailers and national exam
boards. Canapés and wine were enjoyed by all whilst listening to
a tribute by Richard King, CEO of Faber Music Ltd., and a speech
from Paul himself. The evening was rounded off with a short per-
formance of some of Paul’s clarinet works by Victoria Soames
Samek, accompanied by Paul on piano, and the release of the latest Clarinet Classics CD of Paul’s works. Those who
stayed around were also treated to some fun duets, showing Paul to be a Virtuoso Performer as well as Teacher! We
hear more from Paul about his inspirational book on page 10 of this issue.

Federico Colli wins the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition
Federico Colli, 24, from Italy, has won the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition
in a thrilling conclusion to this year’s event. The Finals, broadcast live by BBC Radio
3 on 14th-15th September, saw Colli give an outstanding performance of Beethoven’s
5th Piano Concerto at Leeds Town Hall with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Sir Mark
Elder. Dame Fanny Waterman, Chairman and Artistic Director of the Competition, now
in its 50th Anniversary year, said of the results the day after the finals: “The standard of
this year’s competition was exceptionally high and the six prize winners were all truly
remarkable as we have heard at this afternoon’s wonderful Gala Recital.” See page 15
for more information regarding the BBC’s six-part documentary about the competition.

Dame Fanny
celebrates‘The Leeds’
By the time Pianofforte hits your
doormat, the 17th Leeds International
Piano Competition will have
happened. A new dazzling talent
will have joined the list of some of
the world’s most eminent pianists
to have won the competition (past
winners including Murray Perahia,
Radu Lupu, Andras Schiff, Mitsuko
Uchida, Lars Vogt, Louis Lortie, Artur
Pizarro and Piotr Anderszewski).
“The Leeds gives an outstanding
opportunity for young professional
pianists to advance their careers and
become the artists of the future”, says
Dame Fanny as we settle down in her
beautiful drawing room: a room
pianism – beauty of tone, musical
integrity, rhythmic vitality and
MAGIC.”
‘The Leeds’ will be celebrating its
Golden Anniversary next year –
all thanks to the vision of Dame
Fanny, her late husband Dr Geoffrey
de Keyser and Marion Thorpe
CBE, who founded the compe-
tition in 1963. Regarded by the
international music community as the
greatest piano competition in the
world, this status was confirmed by the
appointment this summer of two
Honorary Ambassadors to the
competition. The first of these
was Aung San Suu Kyi, after a
visit to No. 10 Downing Street.
David Cameron said: “The Leeds
International Piano Competition
is one of the great classical music
competitions in the world. It’s a
tremendous advert for Leeds and for
Britain as a whole. Aung San Suu Kyi’s
appreciation of piano playing is well
known. So it is fantastic that the
competition has made this tribute.”
In August, it was announced that
Lang Lang was to become their
Global Ambassador. “This is absolute
confirmation of ‘The Leeds’ interna-
tional status”, Dame Fanny adds, “I
am thrilled that these two eminent
graced with two Steinway grand
pianos and adorned with extraor-
dinary mementoes and photos
from her life. “I was determined
to improve the standards of piano
playing throughout the world. Our
jurors are looking for playing that

world figures wish to become part of
the Competition.”
Dame Fanny celebrated her
92nd birthday in March this year
and yet she is as energetic and
passionate about the piano as ever.
“Looking back over my musical
career and to the many young talents
entrusted to me, I am deeply grate-
ful to them for this privilege. I enjoy
my teaching as much as ever, for my
pupils are my true friends and life-
blood. They have taught me as much
as I have taught them, as there is no
age at which I believe one can stop
learning.”
Growing up as a child in the
1920-30s, life was tough for
her and her parents (her father
was a craftsman and jeweller
in Leeds). However, at great financial
sacrifice, they paid for her to have
lessons with Tobias Matthay. She
ended up winning a scholarship to
The Royal College of Music and gave
her prom debut with Sir Henry Wood
and the BBC Symphony Orchestra at
23. “Things did not turn out quite
as I had expected, however”, Fanny
continues, “I found my vocation was
teaching – my true vocation, that is,
and not just second best to perform-
ing.” The rest, as they say, is history.
‘Our jurors are looking for playing that
will reveal the fi nest qualities of pianism:
beauty of tone, musical integrity,
rhythmic vitality and MAGIC.’
In 1965 Dame Fanny met Benjamin Britten who suggested that she might write a tutor for his publisher Faber Music. It
has been a great collaboration: Faber Music publishes the entire Waterman catalogue, comprising her internationally
best-selling piano methods (including Me and My Piano and Piano Lessons), repertoire books and On Piano
Teaching And Per forming . Adding to her already extensive catalogue, we have just published Dame Fanny
Waterman: P iano Treasury Volume 1 with Volume 2 scheduled for publication early 2013. Next year is the
centenary celebration of Benjamin Britten’s birth and will see Faber Music participate in a number of special projects
to commemorate his imporant works. Please visit www.fabermusic.com to stay informed of all these events.

“This Piano Treasury contains my own interpretative insights on all the
pieces, reflecting many years’ teaching and performing experience. I hope
that this collection and my thoughts of a lifetime will help to inspire players:
remember, there is no age at which we stop learning. The pieces in this
publication have all been popular with great pianists such as Rubinstein
and Horowitz. Pupils should similarly strive to make the piano sing and to
capture the range of styles and timbres of the great composers: the can-
tabile melodies of Schumann, the lightness of Schubert’s waltzes (which
should transport us directly to Vienna), the dexterity of a harpsichord in
Maykapar’s Toccatina, the dignified pace of Handel’s Sarabande, the languor
and longing of the Chopin mazurka and the peace, hope and serenity of
Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Bach/Hess). The teacher’s imagination will be
needed to help students with impressionistic pieces such as Bartók’s From
the Diary of a Fly, Daquin’s Le Coucou and Liadov’s The Musical Snuffbox.
I do believe that every piano lesson should have a musical injection so
the forthcoming practice reflects the interpretation worked on and stimu-
lated by the teacher.”

TOCCATINAOP. 8 NO. 1
Samuel Maykapar (1867–1938)
© 2012 by Faber Music Ltd This music is copyright. Photocopying is ILLEGAL and is THEFT.
Maykapar was born in Russia and studied at the St Petersburg Conservatory. In 1901 he founded a music school in Tver, beforemoving to Moscow and embarking on a series of concert tours. Maykapar finally returned to the St Petersburg Conservatoryas a professor of music in 1915. This wonderful competitive festival piece is an ideal choice for small hands, showing off brilliantright-hand finger work. Be careful in the middle section – perfect co-ordination between the hands is needed. You will need towork at your technical dexterity: see Piano Lessons Book 3 page 7 for how to break up fast passages when practising.

LE COUCOURONDO
Louis-Claude Daquin (1694–1772)
© 2012 by Faber Music Ltd This music is copyright. Photocopying is ILLEGAL and is THEFT.
Daquin was an accomplished musician from a young age, performing to King Louis XIV when he was just six years old andpursuing a successful career as a church organist from the age of 12. ‘Le Coucou’ (The Cuckoo) is from his harpsichord suiteof 1735 and is an excellent choice for a recital or encore. Be aware of the balance between the hands and notice when eachhand represents the cuckoo so needs to be brought out. The accents and rests give the rhythm of the ‘cuck-oo’ so must becarefully observed.

SONATA IN F MINORL.118
Domenico Scarlatti (1685–1757)
© 2012 by Faber Music Ltd This music is copyright. Photocopying is ILLEGAL and is THEFT.
Italian-born Scarlatti’s music was influenced by Spanish and Portuguese folk music, with tonal inflections based on the Phrygianmode giving many of his sonatas a guitar-like character. Scarlatti wrote 555 short, single-movement keyboard sonatas in total, most of which were composed in pairs. This sonata is a favourite to perform as a free choice in national and internationalcompetitions. The mood is melancholy in this piece and the rests are important: imagine they are an intake of breath beforeeach phrase.

A MUSICAL SNUFFBOXUNE TABATIÈRE À MUSIQUE (VALSE-BADINAGE) OP.32
Anatole Liadov (1855–1914)
© 2012 by Faber Music Ltd This music is copyright. Photocopying is ILLEGAL and is THEFT.
Liadov was brought up in St. Petersburg and both studied and later taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. A fine pianisthimself, Liadov was known for his strict attention to detail and precision in his own compositions as well as demanding thesequalities from his pupils. This simple but charming piece is an excellent encore. Improve your finger dexterity by breaking upfast passages (see Piano Lessons Book 3 page 7). You need to reflect the winding down of the musical box through the piece– getting slower and slower until it stops; then freeze your hands over the keys until the applause begins. This is not indicatedin the music, so try to feel where you should gradually change the tempo.

This is the question Paul Harris dares
to ask in his new book, The Virtuoso
Teacher. Paul looks at teaching as a
vocation – not just a fall-back for failed
performers, as that notorious saying
would have us believe: ‘Those who
can, do; those who can’t, teach’.
‘How good is my teaching?’ This is a
question which, if teachers are brave
enough to ask it, will cause a dra-
matic change in the teaching culture.
Not only will it restore our own love of
music, which many frustrated teach-
ers lose, but it will also inspire a life-
long love of music in our pupils. We
caught up with Paul recently to talk
about how the book has been received
and to find out what the buzz is all
about. Here’s what he has to say:
“The Virtuoso Teacher has been out
for a few months now and I’ve been
delighted by the response. Those
who have read it and reported back
to me have been extremely excited
by its ambition. The book’s central
theme is essentially that teaching
(more specifically teaching music) is
one of the world’s greatest and most
important professions and that each
of us is capable of doing the job at
virtuosic levels. The book deals with
most aspects of instrumental and
singing teaching. It advances a kind
of teaching (which I call Simultaneous
Learning) where pupils really do learn
and understand; it discusses how to
build truly effective lessons and how
to keep pupils motivated. It explores
the qualities of the Virtuoso Teacher
and demonstrates how important
every nuance of reaction and feed-
back can be in shaping our pupil’s
development.”
Paul’s words have the power to make
you question everything about your
own teaching style and make you
determined to change it for the
better, as Janice Summers discov-
ered: “It has really made me ques-
tion why I work with my piano pupils
in such a narrow and reactive way,
when I certainly don’t do it when
I’m teaching in schools or working
with choirs…I’ve had my instrumen-
tal teaching in a precious little com-
partment for way too long.”
“Virtuoso Teaching is not about filling
our pupils with certain predetermined
ideas and techniques in a ‘this is the
way to do it and I’ll correct you when
you deviate from what I think is right’
kind of way”, says Paul. “Virtuoso
Teaching is not a one-way flow of
musical and technical data delivered
by the superior party (the teacher) to
the inferior party (the pupil). Virtuoso
Teaching is not about mindlessly fol-
lowing some one-size-fits-all exam
syllabus. Virtuoso Teaching is an
extended and unconditional conver-
sation between teacher and learner
Six months on from the launch of Paul Harris’ new book, The Virtuoso Teacher, a buzz has started to develop in the music-teaching world. As any teacher knows, getting the best
from our pupils can be a lifelong (or at least career-long) struggle, especially when other distractions are more attractive to our young protégés than getting down to practise. But how
many of us have assessed our own abilities as teachers: not just focussing on getting the best from our pupils, but also giving the best to our pupils?
THE VIRTUOSO TEACHER

where both parties, through mutual
respect, develop their love of music.
It’s about finding the right route for
each individual pupil which will take
them to a deep musical fulfilment. It’s
about removing the fear that holds
so many of us back in achieving our
ambitions.
“In The Virtuoso Teacher I have sug-
gested many ways that encourage
this development. Fundamentally it’s
all about awareness – being acutely
aware of our pupils’ learning profile
and having deep self-awareness. I’ve
so often seen the results of teach-
ing that lacks these qualities, and the
result is usually a frustrated teacher
and a similarly frustrated pupil who
at some point ‘gives up’ rather than
taking their music with them as a life-
long companion.”
Sounds great in principle, I hear you
say, but I’m a little intimidated by
what I’ll find out about myself. So
Simon Dearsley thought: “When I
started I was immediately threatened:
could I ever aspire to be a virtuoso
teacher? If I read this I am sure I will
just feel bad about all the things I
feel I never have time to do. My intui-
tive dread was so inappropriate: I was
utterly inspired by the aspiration that
infiltrates this book.” Paul’s style is
encouraging and supportive – he reas-
sures us that “It’s really not difficult.
We can all be Virtuoso Teachers. It just
takes a little regular self-reflection,
the opening up and deepening of our
imagination (we all have one!) and the
ability to listen and respond with sen-
sitivity. And doing all these things in
a non-judgemental way. The Virtuoso
Teacher demonstrates how we can
achieve all this.
“We all know and believe deeply that
music matters – after all, we wouldn’t
be musicians and music teachers if
that were not so. And we all wish the
best for each of our pupils. I hope The
Virtuoso Teacher will empower you to
realise these ambitions.”
If you have yet to pick up a copy, we’ll
let you decide for yourself whether
Paul has achieved his aim!
“It is a relief and something of a revelation to be able to feel so much pleasure in the teaching relationship and yet to also know the task is being done well.” Katherine Arnold

Virtuoso performers communicate with their audiences at a high level. They communicate both through their music and through their on-stage presence: their personalities, indeed their very souls seem to connect with their audience and make a deep impression. Virtuoso Teachers are also great communicators and utilise their skills to create a special rapport with pupils. This ability to connect goes much further than the words we use: it controls the way we are and reflects our core beliefs and values.
This chapter is going to consider the qualities, beliefs and values of the Virtuoso Teacher. They are by no means necessarily innate – we may intrinsically have some but not others. Those we don’t seem to possess naturally can be learned and developed; if we don’t have them, or have not considered them before, we should at least reflect on them and then make the choice as to whether or not we wish to incorporate them into our own psyche. They will support our efforts towards Virtuoso Teaching.
The Virtuoso Teacher’s rich and multi-layered character
Here’s a list of qualities to which all Virtuoso Teachers should aspire. It doesn’t include what we do or what we ought to know – those will be dealt with elsewhere. These qualities are all about what and who we are. They are all well within our grasp and we can probably connect with most of them already. They are not in any particular order.
Remain a learner
The Virtuoso Teacher never stops learning. We must never lose that desire for learning that identifies someone who has a real passion for life. We continually need to be exploring, experimenting and refining what we do and what we think. It’s living in a state of constant renewal (and that’s an exciting place to live). We need to share this excitement with our pupils and encourage them to see how much fun learning is.
Perhaps we’ve come across a new fingering, heard a wonderful new interpretation of a familiar work, discovered a new gadget that brings old reeds miraculously back to life, learned a new way to teach breathing, found a great idea for improvising, come across a new metaphor for characterising a particular phrase ... The list is endless. But we must positively seek out the new.
Yes, we may stumble upon something new and interesting from time to time, but that’s not enough. Let’s try to learn, and share with our pupils, something new on a regular basis. Let’s re-invent ourselves as often as possible. Our pupils need us to be fresh and exhilarated, not stale and lacklustre.
