PianoTeachingTips from

Tom Gerou

A fter hitting upon a musical idea, in the case of Willows, mostly using intervals of perfect 5ths, the first task

becomes defining the parameters and boundaries that will limit what is used.

Willows is a deceptively simple piece that uses mostly perfect 5ths. Although the piece is not immediately recognised as a functionally harmonic work, the relationship of tonic to dominant is rooted in the resulting harmonies. Overall, Willows is in the key of F major.

The gestures in the piece are limited to an arpeggiated effect. The texture is deceptively transparent and requires a delicate, yet controlled, touch. Beginning in bar1, the broken perfect 5ths need to be all played with the same even weight while shaping the 2-bar phrase with subtlety. As the first phrase ends with LH over in bar 2, a release of weight in needed towards the end of the phrase.

The second phrase, beginning a 3rd lower, echoes the first. Bars 5 and 6 are 1-bar upward gestures that lead up to the cadence in bar 8. Both of these short phrases ‘comment’ on what was already played and add harmonic movement to anticipate the cadence in bar 8. In bar 5 the phrase will need

shaping by slightly emphasising the F and lifting the hand on the G. This is echoed in the next bar.

If we look at the harmonies in bars 7 and 8 they are ii7, vi7 and V7—essentially a harmonically functional cadence.

Bars 9–16 mimic the first 8 bars beginning on the sub-dominant, Bb. We are now in the key of Bb which is firmly established by bars 15 and 16, also ending on the IV chord of Bb (Eb).

For contrast, bar 17 (remaining in Bb) changes the gesture to a downward motion. The long-long-short-short-long phrases are still maintained but ultimately lead to the final cadence in bars 22-32, finishing back in F major. The harmony in bar 21, at the forte, is the half-diminished seventh chord leading to the final chord, F major. Before the piece is resolved, some unexpected harmonies add colour to the harmonic progression. The harmonies are unexpected in bar 23 (minor v7, ii7 to F major) and remain faithful to the contemporary feel of this piece.

Pedaling is very important in the study of Willows. One of the pleasures of Willows is the sound of the harmonies with the pedal down. There are three important places where the pedal plays a primary role: bars 7–8, 15–16, and 23–24. Let the

Any task in life shares the same basic elements: a goal and details required to achieve

the goal. The same is true in studying and performing music. The goal for an effective

performance of “Willows” is to project musical colour through phrase shaping and

tone production. Take a look at the score below and explore the details that I have

written in red.

harmonies build up and don’t be concerned about the slight dissonance—it is always resolved in the next bar. The final two bars are resolved with a final perfect 5th at the end. Bars 8, 16 and 24 also define the structure of the piece. They are milestones along the way.

The patterns established in Willows will help with memorisation. Although deceptively simple in nature, Willows will convey a sophisticated style lying beneath the surface.

One of the deceptively simple tasks after composing a piece is titling it. A title immediately describes a mood or feeling—a summation of what is heard. After composing Willows I chose the title because I thought it conveyed the piece the best. The willow is immediately recognised for its unique shape and it’s drooping branches and leaves. Although a willow tree is one object unto itself, the long, pliant branches and elongated leaves are open to the breezes and sway independently. The imagery fits perfectly to the open sound of arpeggiated perfect 5ths, either gesturing upwards or downwards.

I hope you enjoy the study and performance of Willows—one of my favourite compositions.

Happy teaching!

A Closer Look

Cultural Blending

Some composers, like Bright Sheng (b. 1955), blend the cultures of Western and Asian art music. Born in Shanghai, he came to the United States in 1982 and studied composition with Leonard Bernstein. Currently, he is the Leonard Bernstein Distinguished Professor at the University of Michigan. Sheng remarked, “Am I Chinese? Am I American? I am a mixture. I enjoy that I can live in and appreciate two different cultures.”1

TAKE YOUR STUDENTS ON A MUSICAL JOURNEY THROUGHOUT HISTORY!

For teachers, it is a balancing act to teach basic music fundamentals, technique, and to prepare for recitals. To also teach historical context and musical style— who, when, where and what—can seem overwhelming or unfeasible.

Great Music & Musicians provides a foundation for understanding the major cultural periods, musical styles, and the development of music through the ages. The book and CD includes art and listening examples to encourage discussions. Listening while looking at the artwork further enhances the learning process and makes it enjoyable.

This unique book is suitable for many age groups and can be used in different settings: private lessons, group lessons, general music classes, or home-schooling.

Expressionism

Influenced by new psychological studies of

the subconscious mind, Arnold Schoenberg

(1874–1951) developed a musical style called

Expressionism. Schoenberg no longer accepted

beauty as necessary. Instead, he used harsh

musical dissonances to express powerful,

yet personal, inner emotions. Schoenberg’s

Pierrot Lunaire uses a technique known as

sprechstimme, a type of sung speech using

approximate pitches and wide leaps.

Jazz Influences

George Gershwin (1898–1937) began to work

in the field of popular music at age 15 when he

heard the African-influenced rhythms of jazz. He

was one of the first musicians to be successful

in both popular and serious music. Among his

works are many Broadway musicals, piano

concertos (Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F),

the orchestral piece American in Paris, and an

opera (Porgy and Bess).

In 1927, Gershwin went to Paris to study

composition with the famous teacher Nadia

Boulanger (1887–1979). She told him she could

teach him nothing and encouraged him to

continue his unique jazz-influenced style.

A Premier Composer

Some 20th-century composers used forms

favored by Classical composers, like sonatas and

symphonies. This is known as neoclassicism.

Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953) studied and

conducted the symphonies of Haydn as a

student. He decided to compose his first

symphony in the style of Haydn, yet he used

unexpected harmonies, wide melodic intervals,

and other individual features. The third

movement is a gavotte, which was a popular

Baroque court dance. However, it certainly

departs from the style of Haydn.

Taking place in St. Petersburg, Russia, the exotic and brightly colored stage set reflects elements of primitivism.

Petrushka (1911) by Alexander Benois (1870–1960)

Primitivism

Through his use of energetic rhythms and complex harmonies, Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) became identified with a musical style called Primitivism. He revolutionized music with his early works for the Ballets Russes (The Russian Ballets). The music of Petrushka uses the technique called parallel harmonies (chords locked into an unchanging shape that move up or down).

Primitivism in art idealized folk and non-Western cultures. The brilliant colors and rough, flat decorations of Alexander Benois’ Petrushka set design and Picasso’s self-portrait reflect this style.

PIANO PERSPECTIVES 07

“I decided the time was right to put all my

teaching experience and

fun compositions together

in my own tutor!”

I t’s is a huge responsibility for us, as teachers, to guide and inspire our pupils with well-balanced teaching

that will ensure they are musically motivated. If we get the mix wrong and our pupils begin to lose interest then we must question and change our teaching strategies. During my 30 years of teaching I have been constantly on the search for new ideas to motivate my pupils. Here are some of my suggestions:

Introduce music that the pupil really wants to play. This simple but effective strategy ensures steady progress, especially if you use the chosen pieces to introduce and consolidate aural and theory. If general musicianship is not dealt with from the beginning it’s always going to lag behind and the pupil will struggle when it comes to exam time.

To help with the understanding of rhythm I work with my pupils on various instruments – the current favourite being my lovely set of African drums! We play rhythmic duets of new pieces – in my opinion an essential teaching tip at any stage. (In the absence of drums, clapping will also do.)

Teaching pitch awareness is also really important and I have a few ways of incorporating this into lessons. Sing

or play a note on the piano then ask your pupil to find it (they’re allowed three tries). I do this at the end of lessons – it’s amazing how much pupils improve in one term. You can also ask them to listen to household equipment (ambulance sirens, hair dryers and doorbells) and try to work out the pitch on the piano (my vacuum is in F). In addition there are some great apps that deal with pitch which are worth exploring.

‘The only thing better than singing is more singing’. Being able to sing the notes is just as important as being able to play them, I believe, and it’s important to include this skill in lessons right from the start. Some pupils (especially boys) think that singing is not cool – you’ll need to find a song that sounds cool and they’ll soon start to enjoy the experience. At the end of a lesson you could also try singing

the upper or lower notes of an interval (always keeping it simple!), and singing back a two-bar phrase of their ‘top’ piece.

Learning theory can seem dull and uninspiring without the right approach. I teach my pupils on notation software: getting them to compose simple pieces by inputting all the information is a brilliant way of understanding theory and makes it much more fun. In lessons, don’t forget to use the pieces you are working on to discuss keys, accidentals, tempo marks, metronome marks and so on – always keeping it relevant and interesting.

And finally, allow yourself to step outside your comfort zone and try some improvising with your pupils. Teaching your pupils modal and blues scales is a useful tool, or using the pentatonic scale on the black notes is a great way to start. You can do this from lesson one!

Pam’s new piano method, Piano Basics 1 and 2, are available now, encapsulating her many years of teaching experience and understanding of how to motivate pupils from the very beginning. These books cleverly incorporate fun theory and aural work around great pieces which pupils will love, helping to develop a well-rounded musician.

PIANO PERSPECTIVES 09

T he answer is no. All pianists start at the same place, with the same tools. Sight-reading skills must be

developed over time and with the right kind of practice.

Music research has also demonstrated that sight-reading is a learned skill, not an inborn talent (Lehmann & McArthur, 2002).

To learn to sight-read, the following must be present:

n Some time each day to specifically practice sight-reading (not performance, which is a different process)

n A reasonable practice environment—quiet, well-lit and without distractions, (ideally) using an 88-key acoustic or digital keyboard

n Sight-reading music materials chosen for their systematic progression in difficulty and their motivating qualities

“Sight-reading is largely visual pattern recognition performed with a steady pulse.” Premier Piano Course Sight-Reading was written to teach pianists how to achieve this goal. The authors—piano teachers themselves—were mindful of efficiently using lesson and practice time while achieving sight-reading fluency.

SIGHT-READ SUCCESSFULLY

TEACHING PIANISTS TO

By Victoria McArthur

Are some students born with special gifts making sight-reading easier for them? Can

students sight-read without practice?

Page 12: Piano Perspectives - Winter 2015

10 PIANO PERSPECTIVES

SIGHT-READ SUCCESSFULLY

The sight-reading materials in each level correlate with the equivalent level of Premier Piano Course Lesson Book, Levels 1A and 1B. There are 14 units per Sight Reading Book. Represented in each unit are five, short activities, each of which addresses an important component in sight-reading skill development (the Lesson Book correlation pages are clearly written in the upper right-hand margins). In addition, the Sight Reading Books can be used with other methods or as a stand-alone sight-reading approach.

It is suggested that pianists play one activity per practice day. Each activity is marked with a repeat sign; however, the activity should not be practiced with multiple repetitions. Play it…then leave it! Accuracy will be imperfect (that’s OK!) but will improve as sight-reading skill grows over time.

In addition, a short direction to the student precedes each sight-reading activity.

Below are examples that show samples of the five activities in each unit of Sight Reading 1A & 1B.

ACTIVITY 1— PLAY THE NOTEPlay individual notes using finger 2 (only) to break down any reliance on playing in set hand positions.

ACTIVITY 2— PLAY FROM NOTE-TO-NOTEPlay patterns with steps, skips, and repeated notes as well as Landmark Notes. The goal is to play notes by using the previous note as a reference. Conventional fingering is used.

ACTIVITY 3— RHYTHM CHALLENGETap rhythm patterns on the closed key cover or lap. The goal is to perform rhythm accurately while keeping a steady beat.

ACTIVITY 4— PLAY WITHOUT STOPPINGPlay a short piece that uses the Rhythm Challenge patterns. The goal is to keep playing without pause.

ACTIVITY 5— PLAY EXPRESSIVELYPlay a short variation of the Play Without Stopping piece. The goal is to play expressively without stopping.

Positive outcomes from using Premier Sight-Reading:

Students will:

n learn to read ahead and not halt or “back up” while playing.

n learn to keep a steady pulse and “throw away” missed or omitted notes.

n learn to pre-scan before playing, noting rhythm and note patterns, as well as marks of expression.

n improve note accuracy without cues, meaning notes at the beginning of the piece, at the beginning of new lines (systems) or new pages will be sight-read more accurately.

n develop confidence in encounters with unfamiliar music.

n enjoy their sight-reading skill, enhancing their ability to learn unfamiliar music more quickly, play duets with friends, and play for social gatherings.

Although sight-reading is not an inborn talent, it can definitely be developed and taught. Teachers who take time to teach sight-reading in the lesson perhaps give their students one of the greatest musical gifts of all: the ability to learn music independently—a lifelong skill! What an exciting thought!

On a practical level (especially for thirty-minute lessons), sight-reading can be heard in the first couple of minutes of each lesson. Likewise, students can dramatically improve their sight-reading skill with only a few minutes a day devoted exclusively to sight-reading skill-building.

As a teacher, it is exciting to ignite, then to nurture the pleasure of sight-reading within your students, with the hope that hundreds of hours of enjoyment lie ahead for those who can work independently!

can successfully and easily use the materials. Below is a handy leveling chart that outlines the concepts within each of the five levels of the series (Early Elementary through Intermediate):

Whether I’m teaching a pop arrangement, classical piece, or duet, I have an activity that I like to use with my students to familiarize them with their new piece. I create a short “Composition Outline” that students can use to explore different concepts in the piece they’re learning. This outline can be a list of activities such as: mapping-out the form of the piece, putting a checkmark over measures with recurring rhythms, circling dynamic changes, identifying intervals and triads, etc. Doing this activity will help “demystify” any new piece before the student even plays the first note. This will lead to better sight-reading and more efficient practice. Unlike other programs, EMT integrates ear training into every lesson plan, played by a variety of acoustic instruments.

Exercises provide reinforcement for each concept. Questions are randomised so exercises can be replayed without duplication of material.

The teacher sees an overall score for each student, a breakdown for each concept, along with full scorekeeping and recordkeeping functions for an unlimited number of students.

Musical examples are from symphonies, marches, operas, oratorios, concertos, and piano literature from many periods and cultures.

Glossary of Terms offers definitions of all the terms and symbols covered in the lessons, including spoken pronunciations, and visual examples. They are also linked in the lessons for quick reference.

Clean layout, easy to find lesson plans, student scores, and customisation options, along with a thorough help tutorial.

Music is displayed on the screen while the student plays along with background tracks. Graphics are designed to help students “look ahead” while playing. The app slows or speeds up the tempo and shows or hides fingerings and/or note names.

These diverse and entertaining solos are “character pieces” that create a mental picture of a particular scene or episode. Students will find it easy to relate to the “picture title” of each solo to determine its mood, style, and tempo. By interjecting their own musical ideas (such as dynamics, lyrics, rubato, etc.), students will enjoy using their imagination to help make each scene or episode even more colourful and descriptive. Students will also be inspired to become more thoughtful and expressive musicians.

One of the hardest things for a piano beginner to learn is to read the notes, and yet it’s crucial to their progress. The Easy Notes theory books teach the notes through stories, which makes learning the notes fun and easy.

The Magnetic Stave and Characters strengthen note learning with hands-on activity. It works! Kids love it! It’s easy to use!
