President’s Pen
Dear Pi Phis,
Happy New Year! I hope that 2013 will be great year for all of you and your families.
Our Pi Phi activities culminate with our Centennial Celebration on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Kansas City Country Club. We are thrilled that Grand President Mary Tatum will be joining us, along with our very own Cindy Svec, Grand Vice President Alumnae.
Sue Robinson and her committee have done an outstanding job organizing the event. The invitation is in this Arrowlet, so please pull it out and save it, as this is the only paper copy that you will receive. I will be sending emailed reminders, so plan on joining us for this very special celebration.
Pi Phi’s Fraternity Day of Service is Friday, March 1, and we are gathering at Brighton Gardens at 71st and Mission Road, along with the R.E.A.D. therapy dogs and children from the Kansas State School for the Blind. This multi-generational event is a perfect reminder that Pi Phis have supported literacy for 100 years, since 1912.
The R.E.A.D. dogs will also be at Brighton Gardens on Friday, Feb. 22 and Wednesday, April 3, along with students from St. Ann’s Elementary School, so if you are free to volunteer on any of those mornings, please contact Elaine Hodgson at 913.381.8523.
For the Champions are Readers (CAR) program, we will partner with the third-graders at Francis Willard Elementary School in Kansas City, Kan. I visited with the teachers and the students last fall, and we will start the six-week program the end of March. Please let me know if you can volunteer with this program, 913.897.6462.
Our club website has been revitalized, thanks to Sue Robinson. Check out photos from our fall events.
See you in April for the Centennial Celebration!
Yours in the Wine & Silver Blue,
Barbara Roe Luhrs

The Pi Phi New York Theatre Tour is always great fun, but we didn’t know it would be such an adventure this year! More than 65 Pi Phis and friends from all over the country joined us for four days of great plays, and it turned into a week of fellowship at the Waldorf! We were supposed to leave on Monday, and because of Hurricane Sandy, finally got out on Thursday. But the Waldorf staff was very accommodating and we had a great time holed up in the hotel!
Award Winners Jeanne Cockayne, Ann Tinsman, Laura Hall, Cindy Svec, and Joyce Howes pose for a picture at the Holiday Luncheon. The Holiday Luncheon was held at Seasons 52.

YOU’RE INVITEDChampions Are ReadersCAR is a month-long reading program for third
graders. The CAR program will be presented at Francis Willard Elementary School in the KCK school district, at 3400 Orville Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. This is a Title I school with three third-grade classrooms, and the teachers are excited to take part in the CAR activities.
The third grade team has decided to participate at the end of the 2012-2013 school year, beginning March 25 after Spring break, through May 3. Students will receive a workbook to use during CAR, to encourage them to read at least 15 minutes each day. At the recognition ceremony in May, each child will receive a certificate of achievement, a new book and a CAR medal.
Volunteers are needed to present the information to the students in March, to check their progress in April and to help with the recognition ceremony in May. Each of these events at the elementary school would be about one hour, so if you would like to volunteer, please contact Barbara Luhrs at 913.897.6462 or [email protected].

The Alumnae Panhellenic Association of Greater Kansas City has several scholarships available for the year 2013 for college sorority women from the greater Kansas City area who are attending colleges in Missouri or Kansas. In November 2012, scholarship applications were sent to all college sororities in Missouri and Kansas. The deadline for submission of applications is February 9, 2013. Interviews will be held in Kansas City on March 9, 2013. Scholarship recipients will be introduced at the Alumnae Panhellenic Annual Meeting and Brunch on April 27, 2013. Any questions, contact Jeanne Cockayne (913-341-1751).
The Alumnae Panhellenic Annual Meeting and
Brunch will be held at the Ritz Charles at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Tickets are $25. The “Woman of the Year” from each alumnae club will be introduced, and a Silent Auction will be held to support the Alumnae Panhellenic Scholarship Program. Auction items are needed from each alumnae club represented on the local Alumnae Panhellenic Association. Our alumnae club has always donated several items toward this event. The bestselling items are under $50, but we will accept any donated items... contact Jeanne Cockayne (913-341-1751 or [email protected]) if you could furnish an auction item for this worthy cause!

Border Wine War!We welcomed many Pi Phis and Pi Phi friends
to the Border Wine War in the West Bottoms on a beautiful Nov. 1 evening. The warm weather added to the festive atmosphere of chatting, sipping and shopping. We want to thank our wonderful hosts Bottoms Up Antiques and Restoration Emporium for providing lively and fun venues.
We thank all of you for helping support Pi Phi philanthropies including First Book. One walk-in shopping group eagerly donated the ticket price when a group member announced Pi Phi had sent her to Arrowmont for a memorable artist workshop! To all of you Pi Phis who do not normally attend alum events, thanks for coming and having a great time. Jason and Colleen at Jowler Creek Winery were great to work with and thanks to KU collegians, Madeline Ford, Bailey Brown and Kristy Gerard for your bright smiles and helping out. With your help, we raised over $1,700 — not bad for shopping and sipping.

Out to Lunch BunchChair: Jean [email protected] • 913.381.6637
The Out to Lunch Bunch generally meets the third Wednesday of the month at 11:30 a.m. To make a reservation for one of the lunches or to join the email/call list, call or email Jean Hall.
We’re planning to go to The Jacobson on Jan. 16. It is located at 2050 Central in the Crossroads District. The owners of the restaurant call it “a New York-style restaurant with a Kansas City soul.” They have interesting menu starters they call “mingles” or “social plates” — fun things to share, plus a nice variety of sandwiches and entrees. Because of the location anyone wishing to car pool can meet at Jean Hall’s home at 8120 Granada in Prairie Village at 11a.m.
We will meet on Feb. 20th at Rye in the Mission Farms shopping area. Its chefs are the renowned Colby and Megan Garrelts of Bluestem fame. They are planning to have a menu celebrating their Midwest heritage, paying homage to dishes that have been enjoyed by several generations of their families.
On March 20 we will try the recently opened Mio, an Italian restaurant offering a small menu featuring Italian cuisine from different regions. It is located at 4800 W. 135th Street in Leawood. The restaurant only seats 75 people, and the owners hope it will remind you of being a guest in someone’s home.
We won’t meet in April as we hope everyone will be attending the alumnae club’s 100th anniversary Founders Day that month. Details for May will be shared by emails closer to the time.

The mission of the READ program is to improve the literacy skills of chil-dren through the assistance of registered therapy teams as literacy mentors.
The Reading Education Assistance Dogs program improves children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: read-ing to an animal. But not just any animal. READ companions are regis-tered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team.
At Brighton Gardens, the dogs, their handlers, the children and the resi-dents form a wonderful group, and Pi Phis help by organizing the hour-long event and providing treats for the students and the residents. We read to the children and the residents, as well as listen to the children read to the dogs.
Dates this year:Friday, Feb. 22Friday, March 1 (Pi Beta Phi Fraternity Day of Service)Wednesday, April 4
For Fraternity Day of Service in March 2012, the students from the Kansas State School for the Blind were our guests at Brighton Gardens, and we will be asking them to join us this year on March 1.
If you would like to be on the email/calling lists to help at one or several of the events, please contact Elaine Hodgson at 913.381.8523 or [email protected].
Thanks for volunteering to help the children learn to read by being part of this initiative!
