I Will Push You Against the Wall and Spill Coffee all Over You. Okay?

Why would anyone not want that?

I’m proposing something really good here. Why the resistance?

Force

What are we talking about? Force

Simple. F=MA

Force = Mass X Acceleration

Acceleration is a change in speed. With that change comes a force exerted on you.

Newton

Force

The formula for force, explains why we resist…

Change

That’s right. Change.

What’s that got to do with throwing you against the wall and pouring coffee all over you?

You are in my car enjoying a full cup of hot coffee we just picked up for you. Like me, you hate those plastic lids. We’re cruising along at 65 MPH. You relax and savor your coffee until…

Acceleration

…until I hit the gas pedal! (Must pass this truck!)

Yikes!

What happens?

So, if speeding up is bad, how about if I slam on the brakes?

Okay, I won’t change speed. You’re safe. Enjoy.

Whoa! Here’s our exit! (Sudden right turn!) What happens?

Acceleration

But I didn’t change speed. I only made a sudden turn---no change in speed. The coffee is in your lap.

Why?

Acceleration

Even though I kept the car at exactly 65 MPH through our turn, YOU spilled coffee all over my car!

Why?

We did change speed. And we changed speed very quickly.

Acceleration

When we were going north at 65 MPH. How fast were going east?

Acceleration

And when I turned right suddenly?

Even though the speed was still 65 MPH, our speed going east went from: 0 MPH to 65 MPH almost instantly!

That acceleration exerted a lot of force on you.

Acceleration IS Change

When I say “change” you think “uh oh, here comes a force on me.”

And you are RIGHT. Change does exert force on you.

So, now that we’re experts on the laws of force, how can bring change without spilling the coffee? Can there be change without force?

Change

We can lessen the force by reducing the acceleration.

Go slower? Maybe. Sometimes that’s best.

But if we maintain our speed and make the turn wider, we reduce the acceleration in the new direction.

Acceleration

Which route is less likely to spill your coffee?

Dealing with Change

To achieve change and not spill the coffee:

Reduce speed going into change (slow the process)OrIncrease the arc of change (implement the change in gradual phases)

Or

Or?

Innovate your change process to handle disruption.

Spill some coffee. Make some wild turns. Hit the gas.

Change is a great opportunity for disruptive fun. Change should be enjoyed and embraced.

And these people?

The whiners and complainers need to grow up. If they won’t, get rid of them.

I’m 100% for the ethical treatment of employees. But, I have no patience for people who slow progress with their whining and complaining.

Change should be positively disruptive. People need to learn to deal with the disruption and to enjoy it. Only then can a company be truly innovative, adaptive and remarkable.

Be Innovative and Remarkable

Boring doesn’t sell nearly as well as new and exciting.

Fun matters. Change should be positively disruptive and fun.

And remember, you can control the force that change exerts by slowing the process or adding steps to the implementation.

But don’t take away all of the thrill!
