I can’t think of a more exciting time in Le Bonheur’s history than right now. In one year we will be celebrating the grand opening of our new hospital. Th e new 12-story Le Bonheur Children’s

Medical Center on the rise at the corner of Poplar and Dunlap will provide much-needed expansion space for our cutting-edge programs which are drawing patients from across the nation.

While our appearance is changing, the heart of what we do will remain the same. We will always provide exceptional health care to every child, regardless of their parents’ ability to pay. We are committed to patient- and family-centered philosophy of care, one that nurtures the family and respects the individual. We will maintain a high quality of coordinated care through safe, proven practices in a transparent, information-rich environment. And above all, we will build programs of distinction and contribute to the prevention, treatment and elimination of pediatric disease.

Th e hospital that is now under construction is a tribute to community visionaries like you who embraced our mission. Your support was the fi rst public sign of our progress toward becoming a national leader in children’s health care.

On pages 4 to 8, you will read about a very special group of donors who are dedicated and committed to help us provide the human resources, facilities, technology and training to support our mission. Nearly 100 area doctors have contributed to the Physicians’ Campaign. Th ey believe that giving back to the community where they live and earn a living will make a diff erence in the lives of their patients today and tomorrow. Th ese doctors are a testament to the belief all of us share in our vision to make Le Bonheur an exceptional place for children to receive care.

Again, thank you for supporting Le Bonheur. Together we’re on a great road to doing great things, and we can only accomplish more as time goes on.

Please continue to tell your friends and colleagues about all the wonderful things happening at the hospital now and in the months to come. You are the reason we are poised to become a national leader in children’s health care and research. We couldn’t do it without you.

With great enthusiasm,

When the new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center opens in 2010, a multitude of donors will have the

satisfaction of knowing that their gifts helped mold the future of Le Bonheur and the health care of millions of children from across the Mid-South and beyond. Among these donors are nearly 100 area physicians who have contributed to the capital campaign as individuals or through their medical groups.

“Our physicians know the new hospital is going to be a truly incredible place, both for our patients and for all of us who work there,” says Meri Armour, president and CEO of Le Bonheur Children’s. Our physicians are partners in our mission and realize the value and impact of their gifts.

“Past and future successes of Le Bonheur would not be possible without the caring and generous support of our physicians,” Armour adds. “They are not only a part of Le Bonheur’s history, they are also part of the region’s history of health care. Other than the day the doors opened in 1952, I can’t think of a more exciting time for Le Bonheur.”

Groups Grant Generous GiftsTwo of the largest group gifts to

the campaign were made by Pediatric Anesthesiologists and Memphis Children’s Clinic, a pediatric group with six locations in the Memphis area. These gifts are part of the Physicians’ Campaign, a component of the $100 million capital campaign to build the new $340 million, 255-bed Le Bonheur.

“It is appropriate for pediatricians to help build a facility and system at Le Bonheur that will serve the needs of children that we can all be proud of,” says Dr. Robert Riikola, senior partner of Memphis Children’s Clinic.

The nine doctors and 16 certified registered nurse anesthetists at Pediatric Anesthesiologists couldn’t agree more. “Our group has had a long-standing association with Le Bonheur,” says Dr. Mohandas Karkera, president of the group. “Many of us have been practicing as many as 30 years, so this is a way of giving back to the community where we live and earn a living.”

When the Physicians’ Campaign kicked off, gifts from Memphis Children’s Clinic and Pediatric Anesthesiologists set the pace for future giving by area physicians.

“It is in our interest as community members and health-care providers to see Le Bonheur grow and thrive in this community,” Karkera explains of their group gift. “We must be able to handle the increasing needs of the children in this area, because they are our future.”

“To me it’s a no-brainer,” Riikola says about the contribution from Memphis Children’s Clinic. “It’s a positive for us and is another way of extending our professional lives. Having a facility that will be one of the best children’s hospitals in the country will draw subspecialists who want to work at a top-notch facility. This will make Le Bonheur a better place for children to be and a better place for all of us to practice.”

Over and AbovePhysicians have not only made gifts

within their group, they have also made individual contributions, regardless of the economy.

“In this economic climate, it is all the more important for us to support Le Bonheur, which serves the medical needs of children,” Karkera says. “The economy

will keep on changing, but health care for every child should not be compromised.”

For those who may still be considering a gift to the Physicians’ Campaign, it’s not too late.

“Every group and individual must decide for themselves,” Karkera says about contributing to the new hospital. “Every person has to give to an organization or institution which is aligned with his or her personal values. If you are in the medical field, you have an obligation and responsibility to give back to the institution where you work. Everyone cannot and will not give at the same level, but everyone at Le Bonheur has a responsibility to learn about the campaign and an obligation to participate in it.”

A Privilege To Work Here

For Dr. Barry Gilmore, who has been an attending physician at Le Bonheur for 11 years, the ability to further the hospital’s mission to be the leader in children’s health care was a key reason he contributed to the campaign.

“Le Bonheur enables me to practice the type of medicine I love and to make a real

difference in patients’ lives,” Gilmore says. “It’s a privilege to work here. Le Bonheur allows physicians to improve patients’ lives, not just in Memphis but throughout the Mid-South area. It is dedicated to a collaborative relationship with its physician ‘family’ in pursuit of true excellence in care.”

Gilmore, medical director of emergency services for Le Bonheur, knows more than anyone how important the emergency department will be when the new facility opens in 2010.

“Le Bonheur’s emergency department serves a five-state area that encompasses more than 34,000 square miles in some of the poorest counties in the U.S.,” he notes, “making it one of the top 10 busiest pediatric emergency departments in the country. It serves as the primary referral source for all things pediatric in the Mid-South. We treat more than 1,100 major and minor traumas each month.”

When the new emergency department opens, Gilmore says, it will expand to 65 beds with a doubling of trauma capacity, isolation areas and in-department radiology.

“This is our home,” he adds. “Let’s make it the place we love to call our own.”

Focus on ValuesOther physicians have chosen to make

generous contributions to the Physicians’ Campaign outside of their respective groups. Among them are Drs. Russell and Joan Chesney who have always supported higher education. With the building of the new Le Bonheur, however, they chose to make this their largest contribution given to any institution.

Russell Chesney, an internationally recognized investigator in pediatric clinical nephrology, is vice president of medical affairs at Le Bonheur. He also serves as chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Joan Chesney is an infectious-disease specialist with UT Medical Group, Inc. and consults with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“Physicians are called upon to serve on committees, to be advocates for the hospital and address other hospital issues,” Russell Chesney says. “Consequently, in most places, there is a philosophy of ‘I gave at the office.’ Giving to Le Bonheur is not a matter of just making a gift to the hospital. It’s making a gift for the future.”

The Chesneys believe that people should focus on giving to things they value and that are important to them.

“Just as Joan and I want the best education for our children and grand-children, we also want the best education for the residents here,” he says. “I have always believed a bright and engaged workforce will provide the best care.”

The decision to make a gift to the Physicians’ Campaign was easy for the couple. “We know the new hospital will attract the best and the brightest doctors, and we wanted to be a part of building an extraordinary training center here,” Russell Chesney says. “We’d like to think that our gift will inspire others to follow.”

Positive ImpactDuring his 16 years as director of the liver transplantation program at the

University of Florida in Gainesville, Dr. Max Langham, Jr. participated in the first liver transplant at the university. By 2005, the university had completed more than 1,000 liver transplants, and Langham was recruited to Memphis to become medical director of pediatric surgery at Le Bonheur.

In the four years since Langham has been at Le Bonheur, he has helped adapt the hospital’s operating rooms to the latest technologies available. When the new Le Bonheur opens next year, Langham will continue at the helm of a program that has a rich history of providing additional training for surgeons from around the world. This is one reason Langham and his wife, Dr. Sue Langham, chose to make a contribution to the Physicians’ Campaign.

“Sue and I believe that our community needs a great children’s hospital,” Langham says. “The commitment of Le Bonheur to care for all children, regardless of their family’s ability to pay, was an important consideration for us. Le Bonheur touches the lives of so many in the community. It just felt right to give in an area we knew would have a positive impact and would inspire our confidence that the donation we made would actually make a difference.”

Langham notes that too often people focus on the size of the gift instead of the act of giving: “One way for us to care for our patients is to be involved in improving the hospitals and facilities in which we provide care. By giving a donation, we simultaneously and directly influence and improve both our workplace and our patients’ care. Budget realities may affect the size of the gift but should not prevent anyone from making a gift. Even small gifts add up, and

Pediatric cardiologist Dr. Rush Waller is literally driving home the message that all Le Bonheur physicians should support the Physicians’ Campaign.

Last summer, Waller put his love for the hospital on the road when he transformed his personal car into a moving billboard for Le Bonheur. His inspiration for the brightly colored Dodge Nitro, dubbed the Le Bonheur Utility Vehicle or LUV, grew out of his leadership role in the Physicians’ Campaign.

“I was thinking of other ways to promote the idea of a new hospital among my colleagues,” Waller says. “The car serves as an icebreaker and gives me the opportunity to talk about the new Le Bonheur with other physicians and the community at large.”

Waller is one of nearly 100 physicians in Memphis who have contributed individually or through a group practice to Le Bonheur’s campaign to build a new hospital. As one of the leaders for the Physicians’ Campaign, persuading other doctors to make a gift to Le Bonheur is his objective.

“Le Bonheur is our primary workplace, it supports our livelihood, and it is important for all of us to understand that there are needs for the hospital that are not going to be met by operating revenue,” he says. “It’s important for physicians to set an example for the community. Just being here and doing your job isn’t enough. As we continue to raise money, we must be able to say the physicians have participated.”

Waller has worked at Le Bonheur since 1999 and is the medical director of Le Bonheur’s catheterization lab. His history with the hospital, however, goes back to the 1940s when his late grandmother, Virginia Waller, was one of the members of the Le Bonheur Club who raised money to build the first hospital in 1952. Waller was also a patient at Le Bonheur in the 1970s when he was diagnosed with pneumonia, and his son, Wilson, 17, received surgery here two years ago for an appendectomy.

Waller says he receives very positive comments about the LUV. Recently, a fellow at a gas station came up to him and told him he couldn’t give a lot of money to Le Bonheur but asked if there was any volunteer work he could do.

“I’m not a good salesman, but my car is,” Waller says. Even after the Physicians’ Campaign ends, Waller knows

his LUV will continue to promote the hospital. n

the generosity of spirit embodied in the act of giving affirms the positive aspects of humanity and ourselves.”

Investment in the Future Le Bonheur neonatologist Dr. Marilyn

Robinson and her husband, Dr. Lloyd Robinson, chose to make a campaign gift to Le Bonheur, because they believe in the impact that the new hospital will make upon the future health care of children in our community, especially those who require the services of Le Bonheur’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The NICU delivers intensive care to newborns within the first 28 days of life (the neonatal period). Memphis has an excessive number of premature babies and has the highest rate of infant mortality in the U.S.

“The new Le Bonheur is a big investment for the children in our community,” Robinson says. “Everybody has children in their lives, whether they are nieces, nephews or children of friends. Having an excellent children’s hospital gives all of us a better vision of the future. The new Le Bonheur will also allow for growth of our services.”

Robinson was on the staff of Methodist University Hospital newborn intensive care from 1984 to 2004. During this time she helped create the plans and implement the strategies for opening the NICUs at Methodist North, Methodist South and Methodist University hospitals. She was called to Le Bonheur five years ago to set up the hospital’s NICU, which opened in June of 2005 with 15 beds.

As the Chesneys have done, the Robinsons have aligned their giving with their interest within the new hospital. The current Le Bonheur NICU now has 30 beds including a transitional care unit. The NICU at the new Le Bonheur will have 60 beds, and for Robinson and the others on the neonatal intensive care unit team, these extra beds will enable them to take care of all the babies in need of specialized services.

“The NICU team takes care of the total family,” Robinson explains. “As Le Bonheur becomes more well known for its excellence in neonatal care, we will continue to receive more referrals and will need more beds to care for more patients.

“Just talking to my peers, I tell them investing in Le Bonheur is an investment in their practice in the long run,” Robinson says. “With the new hospital,

they will have more patient referrals and enjoy their practice more, because they won’t have to ‘make do’ with yesterday’s vision. When the facility limits the practice, then it’s time for the physicians to rise.”

Consider Le Bonheur Like FamilyFor the past 20 years, Dr. Royce

Joyner has been making contributions to Le Bonheur. His first gift was made to help purchase equipment needed for the clinical laboratory.

“Le Bonheur has always provided the services that our community needs, however the importance of those services is undervalued by the general public,” he says. “I work here and see what goes on every day and have always thought Le Bonheur was worth promoting and supporting.”

Joyner says that as the years have gone by, he realizes his contributions to Le Bonheur have become even more important: “When you think about the advances in neurosurgery made by Le Bonheur physicians, the establishment of a top-notch epilepsy program, the rapidly expanding neonatology program, and especially the genuine long-term commitment of the Le Bonheur medical staff, you know that it’s important that those of us who are able to give do so.”

What has kept Joyner giving continuously for the past two decades?

“Le Bonheur’s mission is to be the leader in children’s health in the Mid-South through high-quality patient care, education, research and advocacy,” he says. “Le Bonheur lives up to that mission. It’s not just a bottom-line operation here.”

Sirella, his wife, is a member of the Le Bonheur Club to which she contributes and devotes much of her time to volunteering at the hospital. “We both believe it is important to volunteer time as well as funding,” he says.

Joyner sees the financial uncertainty of the future as the greatest challenge.

“Many of us have donated to a lot of charities in the past, but now our ability to make multiple gifts may be hindered by the state of the economy. The important thing,” Joyner stresses, “is to consider the Le Bonheur family as your own and to treat it as you would treat one of your own family members in need.”

Mediocrity UnacceptableFor more than 40 years, Dr. Phillip George’s heart has belonged

to Le Bonheur. During his long career at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, George was involved in medical education and patient care. He founded the department of pediatric pulmonary medicine at Le Bonheur in 1978.

In his 70s, George has long been retired from his medical practice and career at UTHSC, but he’ll never retire as champion for the young patients at Le Bonheur.

“I have seen Le Bonheur grow and develop over the past 50 years,” says George from his East Memphis home. “Mediocrity was never acceptable. At the core of everything achieved there was always a high standard of excellence.”

This is why George has been an advocate for the Physicians’ Campaign to build a new Le Bonheur. “I wanted to see this [excellence] continue and, like many others, realized that a new Le Bonheur was essential. Le Bonheur is not just a hospital. It is a part of the community. I am willing to do whatever I can to help make that happen.”

The new facility will enable specialized medical teams to combine with technological advances to rank Le Bonheur among the top children’s hospitals in the United States. Le Bonheur’s high level of patient care, along with cutting-edge medical education and research, are what inspired George to make his gift.

“Every physician in this community should feel honored and privileged, as I do, to give in support of the new hospital in order to ensure that the medical services continue at an even higher level,” he says.

Even when the Physicians’ Campaign ends, George says there will be plenty of opportunities to continue supporting the numerous needs at the new hospital.

Delivering Top-notch CareDr. Rick Hanna, a pediatric emergency specialist at

Le Bonheur, believes that giving back through the Physicians’ Campaign is one way he can champion the hospital’s mission to offer top-notch health care for sick and injured children.

“If we want to continue to offer the best health care possible for our children and the future, we should all consider supporting Le Bonheur,” he says. “The funding necessary to operate Le Bonheur is considerable. The guarantee that Le Bonheur will be here in times of need is fueled by donations.”

Hanna first arrived at Le Bonheur in 1989 as a resident. After 11 years at other children’s hospitals, he returned to Le Bonheur in 2003 as attending physician in the emergency department.

“At Le Bonheur, we offer our city, community and region a service that is vital to the very existence of the area,” Hanna says. “When children become ill or are injured, Le Bonheur offers the most advanced medical care along with a nurturing environment for their recovery and healing. Supporting the hospital ensures that I will be able to deliver that care in a state-of-the-art, child- and family-friendly medical center.”

Hanna notes that children’s hospitals typically receive a great deal of community support, and he says “the amount of support I see everyday at Le Bonheur is amazing. One reason I am proud to say I work at Le Bonheur is that our institution is so well thought of. Giving to Le Bonheur guarantees that my own children will have a place should they ever need health care.” n

Every Friday, Memphis’ headquarters for Lenny’s Sub Shop

goes casual for Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center. Th e 20-plus full-time corporate employees of the popular quick-service restaurant franchisor don blue jeans in place of business attire as a fundraiser for the hospital.

When CEO George Alvord was fi rst approached by employees in 2005 about relaxing the dress code on Fridays, he consented only on the condition that employees agree to contribute to a charitable fund. Th e involvement of Lenny’s franchisor investors Alan and Susan Graf with Le Bonheur inspired the staff to become more engaged with the hospital and resulted in the selection of Le Bonheur as their charity of choice. Susan is a Le Bonheur board member and longtime Le Bonheur Club member.

Over the last four years, any Lenny’s corporate employee who pays $5 can wear blue jeans to work on Fridays. Some employees pay weekly while others make a contribution at the end of the year. Lenny’s then matches the employee contributions and makes one large gift to Le Bonheur annually. Th e internal fundraiser is coordinated by Teresa Wicker, manager of communications for Lenny’s, and executive vice president Linda Costas, now an active member of the Le Bonheur Club herself. Since Lenny’s Blue Jean Friday for Le Bonheur began, employees have raised more than $20,000.

“Le Bonheur is one of the most worthwhile charities in town,” says Alvord, whose company has also contributed to the capital campaign, sponsors the Le Bonheur Club luncheon and fashion show and was a fi rst-time sponsor for the 2009 Big Wig Ball. “Lenny’s Sub Shop is a family-friendly restaurant. Many of our franchisees, restaurant employees and guests have children who have been cared for at Le Bonheur,” Alvord adds,

noting that his oldest grandson had an emergency appendectomy at Le Bonheur.

“It’s nice to dedicate yourself to a charity and a good cause and for all of us to do it together,” explains Holly Baker, manager of marketing and public relations.

“It’s worth it to give back,” Costas adds.“I do it for the kids,” says Anita Howald,

director of information technology. For Matt Kuhn, senior director of

franchise development and a Shelby County commissioner, wearing blue jeans for Le Bonheur is personal.

“When my daughter, Chandler, was 2, she had tubular pneumonia and was at Le Bonheur for 15 days. She is now 6. Wearing blue jeans makes me think of the wonderful care she received there.” n

When the new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center opens in 2010, patients and their families will have a magical

entertainment experience to relieve some of the boredom of their hospital stay. Th anks to the generosity of Le Bonheur’s associates, who contributed more than $1.3 million to the capital campaign, the new facility will include a “Room of Magic” state-of-the-art movie theatre sure to bring lots of laughter and joy to all of Le Bonheur’s kids.

“Le Bonheur associates were excited about making contributions to the campaign to build their new hospital,” says Kavanaugh Casey, director of the Le Bonheur Foundation. “Th e campaign, one of the most successful

employee campaigns of any children’s hospital in the country, really struck a chord with virtually all employees. Associates from every department and unit, from the ground fl oor to the top fl oor, and from all levels of service participated.”

“It was inspiring to see our entire system get involved, with associates from all the Methodist hospitals also participating to help provide a better future for our patients and their families,” Casey adds. “Th e dedication of our associates has also been impressive to other campaign donors who have commented on this campaign’s success.”

Giving to Le Bonheur’s campaign “is what being a Le Bonheur associate is all about,” explains Sheila McClain, administrative

supervisor/fl ex team manager and co-chairman of the “Let’s Pull Together” associates’ Campaign. “Every associate who works at Le Bonheur loves kids and has a passion that truly cannot be measured. Giving to Le Bonheur’s campaign is a lasting gift that will bring joy to many children.

“Our campaign gifts were given from the heart to all the kids in the future hospital,” McClain adds, noting that the theatre will be named in honor of the associates’ gift. “Th ere is something very magical about a child watching a movie with fascination. Associates wanted to provide something that would touch lives over and over again for years to come. Th ey love knowing they contributed to making a diff erence for the kids.”

Magic was a simple decision. “Th is was a great opportunity for associates to practice philanthropy while providing our patients with a fi rst-class entertainment activity,” Butler says. “It gives all of us a sense of pride knowing that our contributions will make a diff erence for future generations.”

Le Bonheur’s Child Life director Th omas Hobson says the theatre shows just how much Le Bonheur’s associates really care for the children. “Th ey will do whatever it takes to make sure the kids know they are cared for completely,” he says.

In addition to providing entertainment to combat the tedium accompanying prolonged hospital stays for patients and their families, the theatre will serve to help them feel safe. “When a child is sick they need to return to their normal state as quickly as possible,” McClain says. “Movies help distract them from their illness and stimulate their imagination. It helps them heal more quickly and provides them with incentives to get better faster.”

Brittany Cardell, clinical director for 6 West, concurs. “Le Bonheur associates believe in what we do and in how we do it,” Cardell says. “So much of our daily lives are given to the children we care for, and it is in our hearts to ensure the patients have everything they need. We have committed ourselves to our patients’ recovery and our families’ peace of mind. Enabling them to fi nd comfort outside of their daily medical treatment can be as healing as all of the medical care in the world.”

Th e theatre will help bring healing and wellness to patients, according to Cardell.

“Laughing heals the heart and eases the soul,” she says. “Hospitalization contributes to drastic changes in a child’s normal daily activities, causing fear, anxiety and a sense of loss. Th eir loved ones experience these same emotions. Enabling them to take part in ‘normal’ activities provides security, trust, comfort, acceptance and hope.

“Using entertainment and distraction as therapy can actually speed the healing process, reduce the need for medications and shorten the length of hospital stay,” Cardell adds. “After all, laughter is the best medicine, and the Room of Magic will be one more way we can help meet our patients’ needs and make a diff erence in the life of a child.” n

“Room of Magic” To Enchant Le Bonheur

“Kids love movies,” explains Brad Parsley, owner of Audio Video Artistry, a Memphis business that designs and installs custom entertainment and communications systems. “When they are sick and in the hospital with nothing to do, the experience of going into a theatre with a big screen and great sound brings them the magic of movies. Le Bonheur is the perfect place for a project like this. It will be an escape where children can go to forget about being sick for a few hours. Who would get more enjoyment out of this than a sick kid?”

Parsley is working with the theatre’s design team, which includes the involvement of the local chapter of American Society of Interior Designers, to create a magical interior “where the walls come alive with a fun and festive atmosphere,” he says. “We want every aspect of the room’s design to be taken into account for the highest-quality sound and visual experience possible. From the carpeting and furnishings to the ceiling height, it will look and sound the best.”

Parsley fi rst learned about the Elf Foundation, a non-profi t group founded in 2001 to create private entertainment theatres for children’s hospitals across the country, while attending an industry seminar. He decided this was a great project for his company to get involved with.

“Th e whole concept really grabbed me when I fi rst learned about it,” Parsley recalls. “It was a great idea from day one, and I spoke with the folks from

Le Bonheur and began to make some calls.”Th e Elf Foundation acts as a catalyst within

the consumer electronics industry and in local communities to bring the magic of music and fi lm to children in a time of need. To date, the Elf Foundation has opened more than 70 Room of Magic theatres in the U.S. and Canada with some 45 more in the planning stages. Among the pediatric hospitals with Elf theatres are Children’s Hospital Boston, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Le Bonheur’s Room of Magic will be 19 feet wide by 37 feet long with a 13-foot motorized screen, according to Parsley. Speakers will be built into the walls, the equipment room will have glass windows so the kids can see all the high-tech gear, and it will feature a Crestron automation system that operates with the touch of only one button. It will show fi rst-run movies and will be designed to accommodate IV equipment, wheelchairs and other special needs of the patients.

Once the new hospital opens and the theatre begins enchanting Le Bonheur’s patients, Parsley says there will be an ongoing need to purchase software and upgrades as technology advances.

“We intend to fi nd a way to make this a community project,” Parsley says. “Our entire team at Audio Video Artistry plans to become very involved,” he adds. “Th ey are very enthusiastic. We can’t wait.” n

Michelle Perry never dreamed that when her daughter Allyson was 4 that she would need to leave the family’s home in Bartlesville,

Okla., for treatment at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis. After physicians found a tumor on Allyson’s brain in 2008, the family investigated the best pediatric neurosurgery program available, and their search led them to Le Bonheur’s Neuroscience Institute.

Today, Allyson is a happy 5-year-old who is learning and playing and never slows down.

Th e Perry family was one of nine families who volunteered to compete in the 2009 Family Aff air event, a friendly competition that brings families together to see who can raise the most money for Le Bonheur.

For eight weeks, the families raised funds through a variety of fun and creative ways. One family held a golf tournament and sold T-shirts. Another family presented a beauty pageant and talent show. Still another arranged a bowling promotion. Th ree of the families looked to social networking Websites to support their “cause” while others wrote personal letters. Even entire communities reached out to support the families. Such was the case in the Tupelo, Miss., area where various local restaurants banded together to sell sweet tea with proceeds to support the four participating families from their area.

All nine families have a child who received treatment at Le Bonheur. By reaching out to their own networks of families and friends to support their eff orts, these grateful families help make it possible for many other

Le Bonheur patients to receive the same exceptional care that their child received. Th e family that raised the most contributions through their “fun”-raising eff orts was then named the Miracle Maker Family of the Year.

Vying for the Memphis 2009 title were the Perry family, the Adair family of Moscow, Tenn., the Barton family of

Olive Branch, Miss., the Catherwood family of Concord, N.C., and the Morrow family of Lakeland, Tenn. Participants in the Tupelo event included the Fisher family, the Hughes family, the Scott family and the Daniel-Hoskins family, all from the Tupelo area.

Th e Perry family was announced as the winner of the Memphis Miracle Maker Blast

at the Memphis Botanic Garden after raising a total of $56,000. Th e Hughes family was named winner of the Tupelo Miracle Maker Blast at the BancorpSouth Conference Center – Hilton Garden Inn for their contribution of $14,000. More than $130,000 was raised by the nine families.

Th is was the third year for the Memphis event and the fi rst year for the Tupelo event. Both featured food, a silent auction and activities for children.

“Th e Family Aff air program was initiated in 2007 to educate people throughout the country about the exceptional health care that families and their children are receiving at Le Bonheur,” says Michelle Stubbs, director of annual giving for the Le Bonheur Foundation. “Th is fundraising event enables the country to hear about the successful outcomes and miracles that take place at Le Bonheur every day. By sharing their stories, Family Aff air participants help other families who seek specialized care for their own children.”

Families such as the Morrows participated in the event. Th eir daughter Kaitlyn was born with a rare metabolic disorder, and they were given seven months with her instead of only a few days, thanks to the medical treatment she received at Le Bonheur.

Th e Adair family, whose daughter, Alyssa, was born with a life-threatening congenital heart defect, was given less than 12 hours to live following surgery. After four months in Le Bonheur’s intensive care unit, Alyssa beat the odds, and although now dependent on a pacemaker, she plays basketball and soccer, cheers on a competitive cheerleading team and competes in beauty pageants.

In the case of Allyson Perry, her parents had been told there was no chance, no hope for their daughter.

“Participating in A Family Aff air was our opportunity to give back to Le Bonheur, which has given our family so much,” Mike Perry says. “We are eternally grateful because they took care of our family and gave us Allyson back.”

The Perry Family Story

To be named the 2009 Memphis Miracle Maker Family of the Year, the Perry family of Oklahoma, organized a letter-writing campaign and utilized Facebook and other social media outlets. Th ey put together a golf tournament and a dinner with a silent auction, and they sold “Power of Allyson” T-shirts in their quest for the Family Aff air title.

Th eir trip to Le Bonheur began in early 2008 when 4-year-old, Allyson experienced vision changes. An MRI revealed the last thing they ever expected: a tumor the size of a golf ball on Allyson’s brain.

Th ere were no pediatric neurosurgeons where they live, and they began searching the country to fi nd the absolute best care for their daughter. Th ey chose Le Bonheur for its skilled neurosurgery program.

A biopsy revealed Allyson’s tumor was very rare and required special surgery. Last May, Le Bonheur’s neurosurgery team was able to remove 90 percent of Allyson’s tumor. After fi ve weeks at Le Bonheur, the Perry family went home. Her family believes that the care Allyson received at Le Bonheur gave her a second chance at life.

“Allyson’s surgeon, Dr. Rick Boop assured us that he would take care of her and treat her the way he would treat his own child,” Mike Perry says. “We were so blessed to have the doctors, surgeons, nurses and staff at Le Bonheur, and we are extremely grateful for the exceptional care they provided our family.”

The Hughes Family Story

To be named the 2009 Tupelo Miracle Maker Family of the Year, the Hughes family conducted a letter-writing campaign to family and friends, utilized social networking sites, sold handcrafted jewelry made by local artist Tab Boren and developed a corporate matching program with Grainger, Inc. of Memphis.

Cooper Hughes was born two months early with many medical conditions, including bowel problems, clubfeet and only one kidney. He was airlifted by Le Bonheur’s Pedi-Flite from Tupelo less than 24 hours after his birth and spent the fi rst 10 months of his life at Le Bonheur.

Today, Cooper is running and jumping around like other children his age. Except for an allergy to milk and tree nuts, he eats whatever he wants and is a normal 5-year-old boy when it comes to picky eating.

Still under the watchful care of Le Bonheur physicians, Cooper continues to be monitored for his ongoing medical issues.

Cooper’s parents, Terri and Russell, are grateful that Le Bonheur is in close proximity to their home in Tupelo and has the pediatric specialists on staff to treat Cooper’s conditions.

“We really enjoyed participating in the

Family Aff air this year,” Terri Hughes says. “Because of everything Le Bonheur has done for Cooper since his birth, we felt very privileged to be able to give back to the hospital in this way.” n

Since 2005, students in the Upper School vocal music department at St. Agnes Academy in Memphis have raised their voices in support

of the hospital and its patients. In addition to singing and performing for Le Bonheur patients, the vocal students have presented an annual fundraiser for the hospital that has generated more than $18,400 in four years.

To recognize their talent and contributions to Le Bonheur Children’s, the music department was named one of the 2009 recipients of the Crystal Awards presented by the Memphis Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

“Th e Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award is presented to an organization that has made a signifi cant impact and demonstrated

exceptional service to the community in a fundraising role,” says Kevin Roehl, president of the board of the Memphis AFP. “Recipients serve as role models for other youth in Memphis to promote philanthropy and encourage community involvement among young people. Even during their own capital campaign for St. Agnes, the girls kept Le Bonheur near and dear to their hearts.”

St. Agnes Idol, a take off on the popular televised singing contest American Idol, was a hit from the very beginning when it began as a talent showcase for the department, according to Natalie Moore, musical director for St. Agnes Academy. Students audition with a panel of school faculty “judges” who imitate Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. Th ose who pass the audition then compete by singing

for the most votes. Audience members cast their ballots through donations made to Le Bonheur in honor of the contest fi nalists. While the votes are counted, any St. Agnes student who wants to perform can then take the stage.

“Th e girls were completely fl oored with the award,” Moore says. “Th ey are very excited every year about the contest and are happy to do it within our small family here. To know the impact of what they’ve done reaches beyond the campus and to be recognized city-wide means so much to all of us.” n

Nationally recognized trial lawyer Wilbur Colom is extremely grateful for Le Bonheur Children’s

Medical Center. “My life would have gone in a

completely diff erent trajectory if it hadn’t been for Le Bonheur Children’s,” he related by phone from his offi ce in Columbus, Miss. “Th e care I received at Le Bonheur is probably one of the three or four most signifi cant events in my life.”

In 1952, Colom fell ill to the most frightening public health problem of the era: polio. At the time he contracted the dreaded disease, polio was killing more children than any other communicable disease. Th at year, polio reached epidemic proportions with nearly 300,000 cases reported and about 57,000 resulting in death.

Colom was born and raised in Ripley, Miss., along with his two older brothers and a younger brother. His father, Milton, was a hard-working man who taught himself to read, worked at an ice plant, opened up a grocery store and service station and drove a delivery truck in order to support his family. He became a leader of the community and a deacon in his church.

Gwendolyn, his mother, was the oldest of 11 siblings and devoted her life to her sons. She sacrifi ced time with her other children to make sure that Colom received the medical treatment he needed, even when it meant spending days away from their home to bring him to Le Bonheur over the course of his nine-year treatment.

Colom was inspired by the work ethic of his parents and recently made a pledge named in their memory to the capital campaign to build the new Le Bonheur Children’s hospital.

“I watched my father die of cancer, and they spent more money on him for treatment during the last nine months of his life than they had spent on him his entire life,” Colom says about his reasons for making the gift. “It didn’t lend him any signifi cant time or keep him around any longer. Our investment needs to be early on, doing things to prevent diseases. Th e best thing we can do is to put more money into research and early diagnosis along with the prevention of childhood diseases.”

The Road to Le Bonheur Colom was diagnosed with polio three

years before American medical researcher and virologist Jonas Salk developed the fi rst safe and eff ective polio vaccine. He remembers the long bus ride to Memphis from New Albany, Miss., the nearest bus stop to his home. “Th at was before interstate highways, and it took at least three hours each way because there were so many stops,” he recalls.

Oftentimes, when they could get a ride to Le Bonheur with friends or relatives, he and his mother would leave one day before his doctor’s appointment so they could stay the night with his great-uncle, Andrew Wells, who lived in Memphis. Early the next morning they would arrive at Le Bonheur where Colom had to negotiate the long somber hospital hallways while walking with crutches and shiny, chrome leg braces. Th en they would wait with all the other children and families who had come from across the Mid-South for treatment. Th ere were no child-friendly colors and pictures on the

hospital walls and there were no Child Life associates to create activities for the scared and bored children.

Grateful for TreatmentColom received

treatment for his polio at Le Bonheur until he was around 10 years old. Th e early medication and therapy he received at Le Bonheur resulted in lesser damage to his body. Colom also received surgical procedures to correct his walking problems.

Many polio patients have weak legs or one leg may grow shorter than the other leg. In Colom’s case, surgeons cut the tendon in the back of his leg which enabled his foot to touch the fl oor. After this procedure, Colom says he never had

another problem from polio. “I just suddenly stopped having diffi culty walking and started playing baseball, football and basketball,” he recalls. To this day he says he can walk 10 miles with no trouble.

“I’m very grateful for Le Bonheur,” Colom adds upon refl ection. “My life would have been much diff erent without Le Bonheur. Th at is why donor contributions are so important. Th e discoveries Le Bonheur makes in the future will benefi t children everywhere as well as adults. Th ere is no better investment that you can make than preventative care.” n – By Kini Plumlee

When Ellen Powell died in 1988, both Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center and her niece, Betty Barker, were

benefi ciaries of her charitable remainder trust. Betty was the income benefi ciary and Le Bonheur was the remainder benefi ciary. Betty and her daughter, Margaret Ellen Stokes, a Memphis speech pathologist, were also named co-trustees of the trust.

Ellen’s story started long ago, when her family settled on a farm in Arkansas, where the Mississippi and White Rivers meet. Th eir farm was at the end of a road, with no way out except to turn around. Ellen eventually moved to Memphis and became an active member of the Le Bonheur Club, joining soon after the organization was founded in the early 1920s. She sewed gowns for Le Bonheur patients and surgical masks and sheets for the operating room, worked in the gift shop and operated the hospital’s elevator. Le Bonheur was small then, and club members were busy all the time, recalls Gloria Andereck, a long-time club member who remembers Ellen as a very active member who hosted Le Bonheur Club meetings at her home.

Betty also grew up on the family farm in Arkansas, and when she was old enough to go

to school, she was sent to Memphis to live with Ellen, her father’s sister, so she could attend Miss Hutchison’s School for Girls. Betty lived with her Aunt Ellen from the time she was 6 years old through her college graduation, only visiting the family farm during summer vacations and holidays.

“She just loved Le Bonheur,” Betty says, whose eyes light up when she talks about her beloved aunt. “Ellen was very careful and thoughtful about everything she did. She provided me with a wonderful, loving home.”

Betty remembers her aunt as independent, strong-willed and lots of fun. Ellen was married to James Powell, an insurance executive. Th e couple was active at the University Club and Calvary Episcopal Church, where Ellen made waffl es for the Waffl e Shop every Lenten season.

Ellen was an avid bridge player and taught Betty how to shoot. Ever the equestrian, Ellen loved horses and horse racing and often traveled to the family tobacco

farm in Kentucky, where they also raised horses. Ellen, who never had children of her own, lost her mother from tuberculosis when she was a

toddler. Ellen’s husband lived to age 90, and Ellen died just shy of her 90th birthday.

“My great-aunt was very much a true southern lady,” Margaret says. “She was an interesting person to be around and an exceptional role model.”

“I’m very proud that my aunt’s gift will help children who might not have another chance,” Betty says. “It’s great to have Le Bonheur in Memphis and not have to send children somewhere else for care.”

Betty, Margaret and Betty’s two sons, Martin and Matthew Daniel, have chosen the new Le Bonheur Gift Shop to be named after Ellen Powell.

“Ellen sometimes worked shifts in the gift shop as a Le Bonheur Club volunteer, and that makes it appropriate for her name to be associated with this,” Betty says. n – By Kini Plumlee

When Ellen Powell established a charitable remainder trust in her will, she not only provided annual income for her niece, she also provided funds for Le Bonheur so that when families need us, their child can receive care from top pediatric specialists and the benefi ts of cutting-edge technology.

A charitable remainder trust allows you to provide income for yourself or family members while making a gift to Le Bonheur.

To establish this trust, you transfer cash, securities or other property to the trust, either during your lifetime or in your will. You should receive a tax deduction. Your trust will pay income for your benefi ciary’s life or for a fi xed term of not more than 20 years. When your trust ends, its remaining funds will pass to Le Bonheur.

From charitable remainder trusts to wills and gift annuities, there are many planned

giving methods that allow you to help Le Bonheur while meeting your other fi nancial goals and personal interests.

For more information on the benefi ts of planning a gift to Le Bonheur, please contact Roberta Bartow Matthews, J.D., Director of Planned Giving, Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 41817, Memphis, TN 38174, (901) 287-5575 or e-mail [email protected] n

For many students, the road to high school graduation is smooth. For others, it can often turn bumpy. Le Bonheur dialysis patient Jermaine Chamberlain, 18, was born with kidney disease and has been under Le Bonheur’s care since birth. Regardless of the roadblocks and detours he has faced along the way, Jermaine reached his goal and graduated in May and is enrolled this fall at Southwest Tennessee Community College. “No matter how old I get, or wherever I am, I will always have a special place in my heart for Le Bonheur,” he says.

When the new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center reached its highest point in construction, a topping-out ceremony marked

the milestone on the 610,000-square-foot, $340 million facility. Among the hundreds of associates, patients, supporters and construction workers who signed the ceremonious beam were Le Bonheur Foundation director Kavanaugh Casey and longtime Le Bonheur volunteer and donor Clint Trusty.

Th e beam was hoisted onto the highest point of the 12-story tower by crane above a cheering crowd. Green tree cookies were served and all attendees received an eco-friendly reusable

green shopping bag. When the new Le Bonheur is complete, it will be one of the country’s fi rst sustainable children’s hospitals.

Topping-out ceremonies began hundreds of years ago as a way to bless a building and shield it from harm. Th e tradition continues today when a building reaches its highest point. Th e beam for the new Le Bonheur was painted green and bore an American fl ag and a small evergreen tree.

Th e tree began as a seedling and is a

memento that Dave Rosenbaum, Le Bonheur’s vice president for building, received at the dedication ceremony for Le Bonheur’s neonatal intensive care unit in June 2005. After four years of growth, the seedling is now four feet tall. Rosenbaum plans to have the tree planted on the grounds of the new Le Bonheur Children’s when the hospital opens in 2010. n
