Physical ScienceUnit 1
Chapter 3Lesson 1
Properties of Matter• Matter- Anything that has mass
and takes up space• Everything on God’s Earth is made of
matter
Properties of matter• Characteristics of matter are called
properties
Physical Properties• Defined: Characteristics of a
substance that can be observed without changing the basic nature of the substance• Examples: Color, Odor, Shape, Mass,
Volume, Weight
Physical Characteristics• Physical characteristics can be
broken down into two categories• 1. Noncharacteristic Properties• 2. Characteristic Properties
Noncharacteristic Properties• Defined: Characteristics that can’t
be used to identify substances• Examples: Mass, shape, volume,
length
Mass• Defined: The amount of matter in
an object• Dependent upon the number of atoms
or molecules in an object
Weight• The amount of gravity exerted on
an object• Gravity- The force that pulls two
objects together because of their masses
Weight-Mass• 1. Is your mass the same on the
moon?• 2. Is your weight the same on the
moon?
Volume• Defined: The amount of space an
object takes up• Is identified in cubic meters and liters
Characteristic Properties• Properties that are unique to a
particular substance and can be used to identify that substance• Examples: Density, melting point,
boiling point
Density• Defined: The mass per unit of
volume of a substance• D=m/V (density=Mass/Volume)• Density is expressed in cubic grams
units
