What is fitness?

Why is it important?

• Weight control• Disease prevention (Diabetes)• Overall heart health• Mental well-being (mood)• Promotes better sleep• Appearance • Increases overall energy• Self-esteem• Stress relief• FUN!!

Examples of exercise

• Cardio: good for the heart– Running, walking, hiking, dancing,

climbing stairs, jumping, soccer, tennis, basketball

• Isolation: good for building muscle– Wall sits, planks, sit-ups, push-ups,

squats• Recovery: good for endurance– Stretching, breathing

Statistics

• Obesity is highest amongst 12-19 year olds• Obesity is highest among Hispanics and

African Americans• Obesity is the #2 cause of preventable death

in the U.S. (victoryforyouth.org)

• Approximately 17% (12.7 million children between the ages of 12-19 years old) are obese (cdc.org - 2012 statistics)

So how much is enough?

• Goal: 30 minutes / day• Goal: 10,000 steps per day!

That’s about 5 miles– How to increase your steps: • Walk the dog• Use stairs instead of elevator• Get up to change the channel• Taking the long way to class
