Section B Case Study 50 marks
Read the case study below and answer all of the questions which follow.
Ciara Mageean is an Irish middle distance runner. Her career highlights include winning a bronze medal in the 1500m at the European Championships in 2016 and a bronze medal at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in 2019. Mageean has recently broken the Irish indoor 1500m record. She spoke to Joe Molloy of Newstalk radio about her training programme, change of coach and relocating to England to train.
Following a difficult 2017 when she struggled with injury and energy levels, Mageean decided to relocate to England to work with a new coach. She joined Team New Balance based in Manchester where she lives, trains and competes with other professional athletes. She says that elite athletes must rest a lot during the day and follow strict routines and that living with other elite athletes makes this easier. Her day is made up of a morning run, followed by breakfast and a gym session, after which she must rest before an evening run. Mageean was asked if sports science research has reached broad agreement in terms of what you should do on a given day, in terms of runs, gym work and stretching or is it still very different depending on the athlete. She explained that differences do exist. One of her training partners who also runs 1500m, Anna Silvander, responds better to ‘faster stuff’ or 800 m training, while Mageean responds better to endurance work or 5,000m training. This is why it is important for coaches to know their athletes and what works best for them, according to Mageean. Mageean explained that changing her coach hasn’t altered her training too much, that coaches will follow the same principles of training. However, her new coach does like to see measurable
outcomes and has very specific target heart rate zones for each session. Asked why she feels she may have underperformed on some occasions in the past she reflects on a difficult year in 2017 and says that her training had gone well but that she felt quite tired. She spoke to her nutritionist and coach and discovered that her level of energy intake was not what it should have been, which led to her feeling run‐down. Mageean still has difficulty getting enough food on board, especially on race day when she gets anxious.

The Children’s Sport Participation and Physical Activity Study (CSPPA) 2010 was a study that used questionnaires, fitness tests, pedometers and interviews to assess participation in physical activity, physical education, extra‐curricular and extra‐school sport among 10‐18 year olds in Ireland. It found that 19% of primary and 12% of post primary school children met the Department of Health and Children’s physical activity recommendation of ≥60 minutes of Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) daily. These amounts have not improved since 2004.
