LOTE

Guten Tag liebe Eltern und Kinder, Frohes, neues Jahr! Happy, new year! I look forward to a fantastic 2018 and another great year of teaching German at Kalbar State School! This year we will be continuing our lessons using C2C, bearing in mind that the Australian Curriculum for Languages puts great emphasis on communicating and understand-ing. It is paramount that our stu-dents study vocabulary every week. Our grade 4 and 5 students start their German journey with Unit 1 focusing on What’s in a name?, in-troducing yourself and discussing cultural differences between Ger-man speaking countries and Aus-tralia. Grade 6 will continue with Unit 5 focusing on What do my interests say about me?, discussing leisure activities and create bilingual pro-files about themselves. The assessment will only be done in class time and not at home. To ensure vocabulary retention, I will again hand out vocabulary books to the students and this vo-cab will be assessed during the term. The students will randomly be selected to verbally recall taught vocabulary. I would be

grateful for parents’ and caregiv-ers’ support to practise the taught vocabulary at home. The homework this year will be done in their vocabulary books. The students need to memorise vocabulary each week and write one German sentence every day in the back of their vocab books. I still utilize Language Perfect as a warm-up in class but no students will be set up individually as yet. In May we will compete again in the LP World Championships and af-terwards individual students will get the opportunity again to en-hance their vocab using LP in the 2nd semester. Educational, free apps to practise German in a fun way at home are DuoLingo or Bab-bel. The junior and middle school start a new journey this year. Frog Felix and Duck Franzi and help the P-2 students to learn German through videos, songs and games. Grade 3-4 will learn their new German phrases in a fun way with Esther and Socke, a German speaking sock. Lots of fun is ahead of us this year, the Language Perfect World Championships, Oktoberfest and the German Speech Contest. Please let me know if you do have any questions or concerns. Liebe Grüße, Maike Lablans German Teacher [email protected]

Tuckshop Tuckshop will resume tomor-row. The current menu was at-tached to last week’s newsletter and copies are available from the office and on the school website. We are always looking for volun-teers. If you are free for one Fri-day a term or perhaps a couple, please contact Sarah Lyngcoln (0459639946), our friendly tuckshop convenor. The atmos-phere is always fun, friendly and social. You’ll enjoy your day and your help will be much appreci-ated. A big thank you to our helpers for this week. We appreciate your ongoing support.
