Danielle’s PerspectiveDuringmytimeatCarmelIhaveenjoyedmeetinglotsofnewpeopleandmakingnewfriendsaseveryoneisveryfriendlyandwelcoming.IhavereallyenjoyedmyP.E.classesasthetutorsareveryhelpfulandarealwaystheretohelpyouifyouneedit.ThroughoutmytimeatCarmelmyenrichmenthasbeenparticipatinginthecollegenetballteam.Ihavereallyhadfunbeingpartofanewteamandcompetingagainstothercollegesinthearea.ThethingsthathaveimpressedmemostaboutCarmelarethefacilitiesandhowmuchtheteachersarewillingtohelpyouwithyourstudiesifyouneedthatlittlebitofextrahelp.OnceIhaveleftCarmelIwouldreallyliketogoonandbecomeaprofessionalathletecompetingforGreatBritain.IfnotIwouldstillliketobeinvolvedinsportthrougheithercoachingorteaching.

What will I study?
Oncompletingthecourseyouwillhavespecialisedintwoofyourfavouredsportsanddevelopedtheskillsrequiredtoimproveyourperformance,thisimprovementispartofyourassessment.Thetheorycomponentdevelopsarangeofskillsinvolving:thestudyofphysiologicalaspectse.g.anatomyandexercisephysiology;somepsychologicalaspectse.g.motivationandarousal;andalsosociologicalaspectswhichincludeissuessuchasdiscrimination,sponsorshipandtherolesofthesportingbodiesthatcontributetosportingsuccessinBritain.
Eachweekyouwillhaveapracticalsessionandthreetheorysessionswhereyouwillbeexpectedtomakelinksbetweenhowthetheorycomplementsthepracticalperformancei.e.howdoesknowledgeofthetheorymakemeabetterperformer?
Everyopportunityisusedtoillustratethetheorythroughrelatingitinapracticalsituationandyouwillbeinvolvedingroupworkandindividualsituationswhichareusedtohighlightandreinforcetopicsfromtheclassroom.
How will I be assessed?
Yourpracticalskillswillbecontinuallyassessedaspartofyourcourseworkwithaformalassessmentmadeattheendofthemodule.AtASLevelyouwillbeexpectedtoverballyanalyseperformanceanddevelopaprogrammeforimprovementwhileatA2Level,thiselementwillincludelinkswithclassroomtheory.
Thecourseworkcomprises40%ofthetotalmarkswiththeremaining60%beingassessedbyoneexamattheendofeachyear.
Theexamismadeupofshortstylequestionsand3extendedessays,onefromeachareaofthesyllabus.
Incompletingthecourseworkmodule,youwillhaveacquiredconfidenceinyourcommunicationskillsandinyourabilitytoapplytheoreticalknowledgetopracticalsituations.
Where does this course lead?
ApproximatelyhalfofourPEstudentsgoontoHigherEducationtocarryonwithsportrelateddegreecoursesrangingfromteachingtosportscienceorsportdevelopment.Physiotherapyhasalsobeenapopularavenuetofollow.
Theremaining50%haveusedtheirALevelinPEtogoontoenterotherdegreecoursesspanningaswideafieldasmedicinetoaccountancy.
What support will I receive?
ThePEdepartmentisascaringasGreenpeace!Youwillreceiveexcellentsupportthroughoutthecourseandwillbecloselymonitoredsothatshouldyoubeexperiencingdifficultiestherewillbeindividualtutorialstogetyoubackontrack.
What is the PE department like?
Thedepartmentisequippedwithallthemodernfacilitiesthatyouwouldexpecttodeliveramoderndaysportcourse.Thisincludes3Gpitchesandafitnesstrainingandassessmentsuite.Allstudentshaveaccesstothelatestresources,producedforeffectivedeliveryandunderstanding,whichareregularlyupdated.

James’ PerspectiveCarmelhasafriendlyandsupportiveatmosphere.Thefacilitiesallaroundcollegeareexcellentandmakeithardtofallbehindonworkespeciallywiththeaddedhelpfromtutors.BTECSporthasbeenveryenjoyable.Therelationshipbetweenthetutorsandstudentshashelpedtomakelessonsfun,whichinturnimprovesourresultsasaclass.TheenrichmentactivitiesIhavechosenhavesuitedmyworkinBTECSport;Ihavetrainedforthefootballteamandplayedfiveasidefootballonthe3Gpitches.Bothoftheseactivitieshavehelpedmetomakemorefriendsandimprovedmyteamwork.AfterCarmelIwishtogoonandstudyPhysiotherapysothesubjectsIhavechosenfitinverywellwiththisandI’mgladIchosetocometoCarmelCollege.

TheBTECNationalinSportprovideslearnerswithavocationalcoursethatcombinestheorywithpracticalmethodsoflearninginarangeofdifferentunits.Itgivesyouaninsightintothesectorandisanexcellentrouteforlearnerslookingtobuildacareerinsport.
Thequalificationprovidesopportunitiesforlearnerstofocusonthedevelopmentofpersonal,learningandthinkingskills,functionalskills,andwiderskillsinasportcontext,suchasenvironmentalissuesandhealthandsafetyconsiderations.
TheBTECisdesignedtoequipyouwiththeknowledge,skillsandunderstandingneededforprogressionintoemploymentorfurthereducationalopportunities.YouwillstudythecoreconceptscommontoalltheNationalsinSportbutwillalsostudyotherareasthatarekeytothestudyofsportsperformance.

How will I enrich my studies?
AllsportstudentsareexpectedtogetinvolvedwiththeEnrichmentProgrammeandinparticularthesportingopportunitiesonofferthroughthisprogramme.Therangeofactivitiesavailableisextensivefromthemorerecreational,availablethroughouttheweekbywayofclubse.g.BasketballorBadmintontothecompetitivefixturesplayedeveryWednesdayinRugby,FootballandNetballaspartoftheNorthWestCollegessportsleague.Thedepartmentalsorunsanannualskitripwherestudentscantaketheopportunitytousethisactivityaspartoftheirassessment.

What are the entry requirements for these subjects?
YouwillneedtohaveaGCSEgradeBinPEoraMeritinBTECSport(ifyouhavenotstudiedthese,youmustbeparticipatinginasportonaregularbasis)plusGCSEgradeCinbothEnglishLanguageandScience.
How good do I have to be practically?
Itisarequirementthatyoupracticesportonaregularbasis.Youdon’thavetobeaworldbeaterbutyoumustbearegularparticipantinyourmainsportandatleastcompetentinyoursecond.
What sports are assessed?
Youcanbeassessedinindividualsports,teamsportsoroutdooradventurousactivities.ForminoritysportssuchasGolf,BasketballorCricketandanyothers,youshouldbeundertakingtheseoutofcollegeasmemberofaclubandyouwillthenbeconsideredforassessmentbasedontheskillsyou’redevelopingoutofcollege.
How successful are Carmel’s students?
Studentshavedonewelloveranextendedperiodwithpassratesbeingabovethenationalaverageatover97%ineightoutofthelast
nineyears,with100%in2012.
Inadditiontotheexcellentgrades,sportingexcellenceisalsowellrepresented.In2010,Carmel’sNetballteamwontheBritishCollegesNorthWestPlate;theRugbyteamwontheStudentRugbyLeaguePlateandtheFootballsecondteamwerefinalistsintheNorthWestU19’scompetition.
Therearemanyindividualachievementstoo:inrugby,PaulCloughwholeftCarmelin2006isnowfirmlyestablishedintheStHelensRLFCline-up;formerstudentBobbieGouldinghasbeenselectedforEnglandU18’srugbyleague;AlexDunkispartofthe‘EnglandTalentProgramme’afterbeingtheNWSwimmingChampionatthe200,400and1500mforthelastfewyearsandiscurrently2ndintheUKinthe200mfreestyle.He’saimingtocompeteinthe2016OlympicsinRio;DanielleMcGiffordisthecurrentEnglandAthleticsCaptainforheragegroupandrepresentsEnglandinLongJump,HurdlesandHeptathlon;GiuseppePaladinoplaysAmericanFootballfortheLancashireWolverinesandisalsopartofTeamGBwherehehopestobeselectedfortheupcomingItalianTour.
