A new Entrance sign ushers in the Trinity family.
Following a blis-
tering summer mixed
with rain and strong
winds, the Trinity UMC
family prepares for the
fall season with an ar-
ray of activities all in
the name of the love of
the Lord.
There were many
physical changes on
the church campus dur-
ing the summer, in-
cluding a makeover of
the entrance to provide
improved security. The
latest addition was a
new Entrance signage
fabricated and installed
by Alan Riddle, hus-
band of Society of St.
Stephen golf chairman
Rhonda Miller, which
will better direct wor-
shipers into the Sanctu-
ary.
The fall schedule
begins with “Back to
Church Sunday” on
Sunday, Sept. 16 with
Announcements at
8:45 a.m. followed by
worship at 9 o’clock.
Refreshments in Ca-
fé Trinity will be served
at approximately 10:15 a.m. and an adult
Bible class led by Rev. Khalif Smith will be
offered at 10:30. Children’s Sunday school
will be offered at 9:15 a.m. and the Legacy
Youth class, facilitated by Youth Director
Mike Ford, will meet at 10:30. The Tongan
community will continue to worship in The
Chapel at 11 a.m.
Trinity promises to have a full spirit-
filled schedule of activities during the

The popular midweek
program, WOW Wednes-
days, will resume on Sept.
19 with a menu of dinner at
5:30 p.m., Bible class led by
Rev. Smith at 6:30 and
praying and singing led by
Music Director Linda Mazo
at 7:30.
Also during this month
will be the annual Missions
Fair on Sunday, Sept. 30
which will give the congre-
gation and visitors an op-
portunity to see what excit-
ing programs the church
offers. This will be a time to
ask questions and to sign
up to participate in any of
the many ministries that the
church undertakes. This
event will be held in the Fel-
lowship Hall right after the
worship so be sure to stop
by to chat and partake in
refreshments.
Trinity will also be host-
ing all of the Tongan fellow-
ships of the Desert South-
west Conference on the
weekend of Sept. 8-9. If
you’ve ever been curious of
the Polynesian culture,
you’re welcome to attend
the activities.
Other important fall
events in the coming
months will be the Missions
Fair on Sept. 30, the Craft
Bazaar on Oct. 6, the Pastor
Appreciation and Welcome
Back on Oct. 21, and the
ninth annual Society of St.
Stephen golf tournament on
Saturday, Nov. 3, to name
only a few of the events on
and off campus.

planned events for the re-
mainder of 2018 is on the

Lay Servant Ministries Classes Offered
Trinity’s Rev. Khalif
Smith has written an ad-
vanced class course entitled,
“Living the Vision,” for the
Lay Servant Ministries Acade-
my of the North District of
the Desert Southwest Confer-
ence.
The course is based on
the conference vision which
was adopted at the 2016 An-
nual Conference, “God calls
us to be a courageous
church, loving like Jesus, act-
ing for justice, united in
hope.”
The basic course,
“Introduction to Lay Minis-
try,” and the advanced class
will be offered at Trinity on
Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-
8, with the deadline to regis-
ter for either course by Satur-
day, Sept. 1. Each course fee
is $10. Friday’s gathering will
be from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sat-
urday it will be from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m.
Rev. Smith will be leading
the advanced class and has
written the leader’s guide/
study guide to accompany
the advanced class textbook,
“The Speed of Trust: The One
Thing that Changes Every-
thing,” by Stephen M.R. Cov-
ey. The leader of the basic
class is pending.
Participants are responsible for pur-
chasing and reading the text in advance
Rev. Khalif Smith, who will be teaching an ad-
vanced Lay Servant Ministries class at Trinity in
September, baptizes Deja Clunsell and her in-
fant Carter James Ballard in worship on Sunday,
Aug. 19.
of the course. Check for
either textbook at re-
tailers such as Cokes-
bury and Amazon.
In the basic class,
completing this course
is the first step in be-
coming a Certified Lay
Servant. Participants are
encouraged to discover
and employ personal
spiritual gifts as God
intended.
The purpose of the
advanced class is to
promote, advance and
educate the laity of the
ongoing effort to imple-
ment the compelling
vision for growth and
vitality within the con-
ference.
Flyers will be availa-
ble at Trinity to regis-
ter.

The Tranquility Garden
team reminds the congrega-
tion that the memorial bricks
program is still accepting
special pavers in the medita-
tion spiral and labyrinth walk-
way located near the Society
of St. Stephen building.
The walkway includes pre-
viously purchased engraved
pavers under a central fruit-
less olive tree, a sign of
peace in a busy world. This
space is meant to serve as a
place to remember, honor,
celebrate, and contemplate.
The church office can
show you how to design and
purchase an engraved paver
to become part of our legacy
of remembrances. The bricks
have already been purchased
and are ready to be engraved
with your special message.
The pavers come in two
sizes. The 4x8 brick has a do-
nation price of $50 and the
8x8 brick is $75.
Forms are available in the
church office or talk to a rep-
resentative at the Missions Fair
planned for Sunday, Sept. 30
after worship.

Legacy Youth Wrap-up Summer Activities
The Legacy Youth started
the summer with a field day at
Aloha Shores park partnered
with Journey UMC’s youth
group. The Trinity youth par-
ticipated in fun games with
water balloons and races, en-
joyed fellowship and lunch
from the grill.
Next, Steve and Darlene
Goldstein hosted the youth for
a pool party at their home.
Great fun was had flipping,
belly flopping, games of chick-
en, again dinner from the grill,
and the finish was Darlene’s
amazing ice cream desert.
Finally, the United Method-
ist Men of Trinity planned a
night out at the ballpark and
extended an invitation to the
youth. The 51s hosted the New
Mexico minor league AAA
team at Cashman Field and Las
Vegas absolutely thrashed the
visitors, 12-0, with multiple
home runs, a grand slam, an
inside the park home run, and
topped off with fireworks.
The Youth had a great time
enjoying some fellowship with
the men of the church, not to
mention it was the first time
some of them had been to a
baseball game. Youth Director
Mike Ford said the youth had a
wonderful summer and are
looking forward to the fall to
deepen their commitments to
God and to strengthen their
faith.
“We are truly blessed to
have the support of the
church,” said the youth leader.
All youth parents are invit-
ed to drop by Room 10 on
Sunday, Sept. 16 after worship
for a Youth open house. Lunch
will be provided and it will be a
time to ask questions and find
out about the youth program.

UMW Plans Fall Luncheon
In the August issue, a pub-
lished story reported that
Trinity UMC served as the
host of a meeting for the Ne-
vadans for the Common Good
Delegate Assembly.
The June 26 meeting
brought together various
groups throughout the Las
Vegas Valley to pledge finan-
cial support for the work of
the social organization.
The eleven Trinity mem-
bers in attendance discussed
how much funding Trinity
would provide for 2018 and a
plan to raise these funds. It
was decided to pledge $500
which is an amount it has
tried to give each year since
the start of NCG as an-
nounced at the meeting.
However, Trinity’s Mary
Lovelady, who was out of
town at the time of the event
and has helped support the
church’s cause in this city-
wide endeavor, wanted to
clarify this point. According to
the former chair of the Society
of St. Stephen ministry, Trinity
has actually yearly pledged
$1,000 since 2010.
The former educator also
pointed out Trinity was one of
the first churches to financial-
ly pledge support for the Ne-
vadans for the Common Good
cause.

this social organization, go to
www.nevadansforthecommon
good.org.
NV for Common Good Update
The United Methodist Women of Trinity
will have its first function of the fall sea-
son with a Potluck Luncheon on Wednes-
day, Sept 12, at noon in the Fellowship
Hall. The group usually meets the third
Wednesday of assigned months but will
instead meet the second Wednesday of
September.
The UMW Executive Board meeting will
be held earlier in the day in Room 3 at 10
a.m. Donna Canfield, the organization’s
president, encourages all women of the
church to attend this “kick-off” meeting.
All officers are kindly asked to attend the
Board meeting, but ANYONE is invited to
come to both meetings!
Your input is valued. Please bring your
favorite dish to share for the noon lunch-
eon — either a main dish, salad or dessert. If you don’t
like to cook, stop at your local deli and pick up some-
thing to share.
The Executive Board will provide the fall decorations
and tableware and refreshments for the occasion. The
two programs at the Fellowship meeting after the lunch-
eon will be given by Jo Ann Magner (Pledge Program)
and Donna Canfield (Prayer and Self-Denial).
Come join the women of the church for fun, food and
fellowship!

Meanwhile, it will be nearly six months away
when the direction of The United Methodist
Church will be discussed at the Special Session
of the General Conference in February 2019
over the issue of LGBTQ inclusion.
The 93-page final report by the Commission
on a Way Forward has been officially released on
a worldwide basis detailing the three proposed
plans (One Church Plan, Connectional Confer-
ence Plan and Traditional Plan).
Not only are there theological differences in
the UMC, but numerous other proposals also
have been officially submitted for consideration
and will be subject to debate and amending at
General Conference. Ultimately, what is adopted
at General Conference may be dramatically dif-
ferent from any of these plans. What’s more, a
two-thirds majority is required to adopt any
change from current standards.
Holy Huddles will be held by the Desert
Southwest Conference throughout the fall for
only pastors and then for both laity and clergy.
The North District will be hosting Holy Hud-
dles at Trinity UMC in December in the Sanctu-
ary. At 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, it will be a
Huddle for only clergy and then the next day at
1 p.m. a Huddle will be held for everyone inter-
ested in discussing how the UMC and Trinity
will proceed regarding LGBTQ.
