‘smoke free’ to 66777

www.quit51.co.uk

Quit 51 The East Sussex Stop Smoking Service would like to invite anyone who is currently a smoker and is looking at stopping smoking to take part the research study.

The Trial of Electronic Cigarettes (TEC) is being conducted by Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary, University of London will compare the effectiveness of e-cigarettes to nicotine replacement therapy in helping people to become smoke-free.

Half of the people in the study will receive an EC to use, whilst the other half will receive NRT via the stop smoking services’s usual practice. A computer will

decide at random which group smokers will be allocated to and regardless of which group they are in they will receive treatment from specialist stop smoking advisors and psychologists. Smokers who use this treatment are some four to five times more likely to quit compared with no support. Sessions begin one week prior to your agreed quit date and continue for four weeks thereafter.

Any smoker over the age of 18 can participate – as long as they do not have a preference about whether they are given an e-cigarette or nicotine replacement therapy – and they are not currently using either to aid them in quitting. Recruitment has now begun and spaces are limited so call now to ensure that you will be part of this ground breaking study. Recruitment will continue over the next 12 months.

You will not be able to take part if you: 1. Are pregnant or breast feeding 2. Are unable to read/write/under-stand English 3. Have a strong preference to use or not to use NRT or EC in your quit attempt 4. Are currently involved in another treatment based research project 5. Are currently using EC or NRT.
