The Millennium Market taxirank was closed down byMetro Police last Wednesday,due to alleged illegaloperations.

The shut down saw more than20 taxis removed from the rankand a few impounded as a resultof either being unroadworthy orhaving an expired licence.

Speaking on the basis ofanonymity, a taxi owner called the raid and closure of the taxirank victimisations . Thereis absolutely no reason for themto victimise us like this. We aremaking an honest living,working hard to run ourbusinesses. I believe that thesecops are attacking andvictimising us because they wantto cash in our businesses. Whata lot of people don t know is thatsome police officers, in SAPSand Metro are actually taxibusiness owners or have sharesin taxi businesses," he claimed.

"So what these officers are doing is illegal, because they are usingthe law for their own purpose.They want to get rid ofus because they want theirbusinesses to thrive, he furtherclaimed. Regarding the reasonsfor the shut down, investigationsrevealed that there are four taxiranks in Phoenix. These include,Whitehouse Taxi Rank, SpineRoad Taxi Rank (on the outside

Memorial Hospital) and twoareas outside of the PhoenixPlaza. It is alleged that theproblem arises because taxishave permission to rank at onlyone of the ranks. If they rank atany of the ranks which are notlisted on their permits, they areconsidered to be rankingillegally According to taxi

work. "Taxis that operate all overPhoenix, cannot rank at only onerank. If a driver stops atWhitehouse for example, but hehas a permit to rank atthe Phoenix Plaza, then he isillegally ranked at Whitehouse.The cops can impoundhis taxi or fine him. And this isall because the municipality
