What is a Phrasal Verb?
Main verb + particle A particle is usually a preposition.
In most cases, the addition of a particle changes the meaning of the main verb.
She’s going to take her poster
She’s going to take back her poster.
She’s going to take down her poster.
Same Meanings
In some cases, the meaning of the phrasal verb is the same as the meaning of the main verb.
I’m going to call my grandma.
I’m going to call up my grandma.
Clean the kitchen.
Clean up the kitchen.
Multiple Meanings
Many phrasal verbs have multiple meanings. Hang out I hung my laundry out to dry. (separable) My friends and I hang out after school.
(inseparable)

Meanings are easy to confuse, so study is necessary
Separable Phrasal Verbs
The teacher made Stephen give back the money.
She made him give the money back. She made him give it back. X She made him give back it.
Stephen’s father didn’t help bring up the children.
He didn’t help bring the children up. He didn’t help bring them up.
The Rules For Separable Phrasal Verbs
She made him give the money back. She made him give it back.
You can separate the phrasal verb with any object (a noun object or an object pronoun).
The teacher made Stephen give back the money. You can put a noun object after the phrasal verb.
X She made him give back it. You cannot put an object pronoun after the
phrasal verb.

I’ll say an object. You choose a phrasal verb and make a sentence using that object.
Example:Teacher: Uncle Bill.Student: I’m going to call up Uncle Bill.
Finish The Sentence

Student 1 begins a sentence using a phrasal verb. Student 2 completes the sentence with an object.
Example:Student 1: I turned on…Student 2: the heat.

The son looks up to his father. He thinks his father is the greatest person in the world. He wants to be like him when he grows up.

Choose a character to write about. You will get 5 phrasal verbs. Use all of
them to write a story about the character.
