• In order to grow, green plants use sunlight and store its energy in their leaves and stems.

• Sunlight enables plants to convert water into foods needed by the plant. Plants also need carbon dioxide, which all animals (including humans) give off as they breathe.

Energy for plants (notes)

• The water and carbon dioxide combine into sugars and oxygen. Sugars are the food for the plant. Plants use some of the sugars to grow, and store the rest in their tissues.

• When you eat a plant, you take in energy the plants stored.

How much glucose/sugar does a plant make?

• Plants make enough sugar to be used during the night and on cloudy days when they don’t get sunlight. The extra sugar is stored in the plant’s leaves and other parts.
