We know that Animals and Plants both use oxygen and glucose to make energy (ATP) via cellular respiration.

Animals eat their glucose and breathe in oxygen to do cellular respiration

Plants MAKE their glucose and oxygen via PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Introduction to Photosynthesis

PhotosynthesisPhotosynthesis is the process in which plants make their own food (glucose) and oxygen happens to be a byproduct.

PhotosynthesisPhotosynthesis occurs in the Chloroplast

Contain a pigment called chlorophyll

Chlorophyll absorbs all visible light waves but green

This is why plants appear to be green in color

Chloroplasts are located in the mesophyll layer of the leaf around the stomata

Stomata: tiny pores on the surface of the leaf that allow CO2 and water vapor to enter as well as O2 to exit

PhotosynthesisStructure of the Cholorplast:

1. Outer Membrane: Encloses the entire chloroplast

2. Inner Membrane: Encloses the stroma

3. Stroma: Thick fluid inside the inner membrane where the

                         Calvin Cycle occurs

4. Thylakoids: Disk shaped sac where the Light Reactions occur

a. Granum: A stack of thylakoids

Photosynthesis: 2 Main Stages1.) Light Reactions

Location: Thylakoid

Main Goal: Convert energy in sunlight to usable energy

Process:

a. Capture light energy using the pigment chlorophyll

b. Split water into hydrogen and oxygen

releases oxygen to cellular respiration and the atmosphere

c. Convert all energy to ATP or NADPH

NADPH is an electron carrier

Photosynthesis: 2 Main Stages2.) Calvin Cycle (Dark Reactions)

Location: Stroma

Main Goal: Use the ATP and NADPH from the light reactions to produce glucose

Process:

a. Use the ATP and NADPH and Carbon Dioxide to make glucose (C6H12O6)

• By converting light energy to chemical energy, photosynthesis is the first step in the flow of energy through an ecosystem.

Some of that chemical energy then passes from producers to consumers when they eat the plants

Even when people eat meat, you can trace its stored energy back to photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is the ultimate source of all the food you eat and all the oxygen you

breathe.
