Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration
Terms to know:• Reactants- these are the substances
needed for the reaction to take place• Products- these are the substances
produced during the reaction• Equation- a written representation of
a chemical reaction that separates the reactants and products
Discovery of Photosynthesis:
Look for:• How photosynthesis was discovered.

What is Photosynthesis?
The process of photosynthesis in which plants change carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to glucose.

Photosynthesis Description:• Carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and
sunlight enter the leaves through holes called stomata.
• These substances are moved through the plants in tubes called xylem and phloem.
• Takes place in the chloroplasts using chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants.
• Occurs in plants and some algae.
Photosynthesis Description (cont)
•Plants need light energy, CO2, and H2O; these are the reactants
•Plants produce glucose (sugar) and oxygen; these are the products
Assignment- Due Thursday
• Please choose one of the following-– An acronym describing photosynthesis.– A poem describing photosynthesis.– A song describing photosynthesis.
Acronym-
Produces oxygenLight energy is usedAll plantsNeeds carbon dioxideTransported food is done in the
phloem
Poem-http://meg-sci-lpenhs.blogspot.com/2007/08/poem-on-photosynthesis.html
Provides basic source of energy, organisms depend on this virtually,
in making food this is a need, known as photosynthesis indeed.
one of the most important biochemical processes,
usually occurs in plant leaves and stems,a structure in the cells known as chloroplast,
this is where photosynthesis ends and starts.
Song-http://www.educationalrap.com/song/photosynthesis.html
ChorusPhotosynthesis, let’s get into this
Discussion of sunlight, and transfer of energy.Photosynthesis, let’s get into this
Process of chemical reactions and synergy.
Verse IPlants take water, sun, and CO2,
to make glucose: the sugar that they use for foodThey also put oxygen into the air
So we can share, because oxygen is everywhereThe energy transforms from solar to chemical
All the time, everywhere, the process is identicalIn every plant, and every treeEnabling all living things to be
Cellular Respiration Video:
• Listen for:• How cellular respiration gets its name.• The two molecules that combine in the
process.

Describe Cellular Respiration?
• The food (glucose) is broken down to give each organism energy.
• This process is cellular respiration.
• This process occurs in the mitochondria.
Description of Cellular Respiration
• Organisms need glucose and oxygen; these are the reactants.
• Organisms produce CO2, H20, and ATP; these are the products
Assignment- Due Friday
– Complete the recipe card describing cellular respiration
Exit Slip:• Answer must be written in a complete
sentence (capital letter, punctuation mark, and must make sense).
• How are the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration related?
Learn more about photosynthesis at:

Why is this important to us?
• We cannot make our own food (glucose), we must get our food from plants.
• Plants are the first step in the food chain.• The oxygen released during photosynthesis
is necessary for all living things.
