Essential editing skills

How to… Master layersand layer masksExpand your image-editing options by getting to grips with layers, adjustment layers and masks

1Duplicating layersIt’s good practice to duplicate the ‘Background’ layer so that you

can safely work on a copy of your image and preserve the original. The fastest way of doing this is to make sure the layer you want to duplicate is highlighted in the Layers panel, and press Ctrl+J. You can also go to Layer > New > Layer Via Copy, or drag the layer’s thumbnail onto the Create A New Layer icon.

2Adjustment layersNow we’ll add an adjustment layer. Click the New Adjustment Layer

button in the Layers panel (the half-black, half-white circle) and select Hue/Saturation from the menu. You’ll see a new layer, labelled ‘Hue/Saturation’, appear above the image layers, and the Adjustments panel will appear, displaying the Hue/Saturation controls. Drag the Saturation slider all the way left, to -100, to make the image black-and-white.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED Elements 8 or aboveWHAT YOU’LL LEARN How to add new layers to an image; how to duplicate layers: how to use adjustment layers: how to edit layer masks; how to hide or delete layersIT ONLY TAKES 20 minutes

Mastering the concept of layers and masks in Elements will transform the way you edit your images. Layers are the key to both non-destructive

editing – they enable you to make changes to an image without ever altering the original photo – and to creating composite images. Layers work like sheets of acetate stacked on top of one another. Your original image is the ‘Background’ layer, and you can add as many other layers as

you like above it to change the appearance of the image. There are two main kinds of layers: image layers, which contain visible pixel content (for example a person that you’ve cut out from another image and added to a new background image) and adjustment or fi ll layers, which don’t contain any pixel content, but which superimpose an effect on a layer or layers below.

Layers masks enable you to hide the contents of a layer, or the effect of an adjustment layer, in selected areas. You can also hide an entire layer to compare before and after versions of your image, by clicking the eye icon to the left of the thumbnail, or delete a layer if you want to discard an edit. All the layers you add to an image are displayed in the Layers panel (Window > Layers).

Now we’ll add an adjustment layer. Click the New Adjustment Layer

3Layer masksAdjustment layers come with a mask attached, so you can hide

the adjustment where it’s not wanted. Take the Brush tool, and set the foreground colour in the Tools panel to black.Zoom in on the banners on the pier, and paint over them to hide the adjustment and reveal the colour on the ‘Background’ layer. Delete the Hue/Saturation layer by right-clicking its thumbnail and choosing Delete Layer.

4Draw a gradient Click the duplicated ‘Background’ layer (‘Layer 1’) to target it, and

select the Gradient tool. Click the Edit button in the Options bar/panel and choose Foreground to Transparent, then click Linear Gradient and check the Transparency option. Set the foreground colour to a sky blue, and draw a short gradient down from the top of the image. Change this layer’s blending mode to Soft Light to boost the colour and contrast. ■

How to… Sharpen photosUse a variety of Photoshop Elements’ sharpeningmethods to reveal delicate details for prints with punch

1Using Unsharp MaskOpen sharpen_start.jpg. Go to Enhance > Unsharp Mask, and click

an area of fi ne detail to preview it at 100%. Drag Amount up to 90% to increase the contrast around shapes and edges. To increase the edge radius over which sharpening is applied set Radius up to 1.8 – don’t go much higher though, or you’ll create ‘halos’ around edges.

2Before and afterThe Threshold slider reduces the effect of the other two sliders,

so you can use this to take the edge off halos. Click and hold in the dialog’s preview window to see the original shot; you can also tick the Preview box to see the sharpening applied to the main image, but you need to view a shot at 100% to see how effective sharpening really is.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED Photoshop Elements 6 or aboveWHAT YOU’LL LEARN How to sharpen delicate details;how to reduce the appearance of unwanted artefacts; how to apply the High Pass sharpening techniqueIT ONLY TAKES 5 minutes

O ne way to help ensure a sharply focused shot is to shoot with a narrow aperture setting, such as f/16. A wide aperture (such as f/5.6) will give you a

shallower depth of fi eld, making it much more diffi cult to get everything in focus from the foreground to the background. You may also fi nd it harder to get a sharp shot if you use an autofocus point at the edge of the lens. The more central

autofocus points will do a better job, although this does depend on the quality of the camera and your lens.

Despite your best efforts, a shot that looks sharp on the camera’s LCD can sometimes appear slightly soft when viewed at full size on your computer, and printed. Luckily, Elements has a selection of tools for sharpening your images, all of which work by increasing the contrast around the edge of objects in the shot. This increase in contrast makes the details stand out more, creating the illusion of sharpness. Here we’ll look at three most effective tools for sharpening your shots: Unsharp Mask, Smart Sharpen and the High Pass fi lter – try them all to see which produces the best results for different kinds of images.

3Adjust SharpnessAn alternative sharpening tool is Enhance > Adjust Sharpness.

The Amount and Radius sliders work in the same way as with Unsharp Mask, but you can apply more targeted sharpening by choosing Lens Blur from the Remove menu – as the resulting sharpening effect is less pronounced there’s less risk of adding halos. Leave More Refi ned unticked, as this tends to exacerbate picture noise.

4High Pass fi lterFor an effective approach, duplicate the original layer with Ctrl+J

and go to Filter > Other > High Pass. Set Radius up to 2: this will etch out all the delicate details you’re going to sharpen. Click OK, then change the layer’s blending mode to Soft Light. The grey areas will vanish, and just the edges will be sharpened, so you won’t make noise appear worse. ■

Morning DreamsBy Daniel Myszkowski

Daniel says “I have been taking photos for 15 years, and my favourite subject is landscape photography. A friend introduced me to flower photography, and with her help I started to visit Kraków’s meadows to look for intriguing angles in the tangle of flowers and grasses. I love the smell of grass in the morning, the silence of the sunrise, the sleepy bees and butterflies, and the multicoloured carpet of wildflowers. This photo was taken early in the morning in Piekary, a small town near Kraków, in a meadow located next to the river Vistula. The fog had drifted over from the river, and the morning sun and dewdrops created an amazing atmosphere!”

We say “What a beautiful and dreamy image you’ve captured Daniel! By shooting early in the morning, during the ‘golden hour’, you’ve used the light to your advantage to create a wonderful glow for an atmospheric feel. We like how you’ve used the two poppies as a focal point in the image, with splashes of colours surrounding them. By setting a low ISO of 250 you’ve captured a high-quality image, and your fast shutter speed of 1/500 sec has ensured a sharp image, too. To bring out your image’s full potential only requires a few minor tweaks in Elements. We’ve pushed the colours and brightness to really make those reds really stand out, and we’ve also added a subtle lens flare effect, to add another element to the image and enhance the early morning feel.” 1 The two poppies make a great focal point,

with splashes of colour surrounding them

How Daniel can add the finishing touches to his flower image in Photoshop Elements

Change the blending modeDrag the crosshairs in the dialog’s preview window to the top-left corner to reposition the flare, and click OK when you’re happy. Change the blending mode of the Lens Flare layer to Hard Light, and reduce the Opacity to 60%.

Boost the coloursOpen the image in Elements Full Edit more, add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and set the Master Saturation to +16. Add a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer and set Brightness to 60. Go to Layer > New Layer, or click the New Layer icon in the Layers panel.

Add a lens flareGo to Edit > Fill Layer and set Contents to 50% Gray, blending mode to Normal and Opacity to 100%. Now go to Filter > Render > Lens Flare, and in the Lens Flare dialog set Lens Type to 50-300mm Zoom, and Brightness to 97%.

Resting PlaceBy Sarah Lewis

Sarah says “I took this image in a field near my house in Ashton-under-Lyne, near Manchester. The skipper butterfly had recently emerged, and was resting on the grass – I took the image by kneeling on the grass next to it, being very careful not to disturb it. I was attracted to this subject because I started photographing skipper butterflies a few years ago. They emerge every summer, and I find them fascinating. They even land on you and let you hold them if you’re careful enough. When editing the image I used a Photoshop Action to apply a blue-and-yellow overlay, then reduced the opacity of the effect. Other minor adjustments included Brightness/Contrast and sharpening.”

We say “You need to have a good eye and a lot of patience to capture a subject this small, Sarah, so well done! You’ve got the main focal point on the butterfly’s eye spot-on, and the wide aperture setting creates a lovely blurred background. However, we would have been tempted to use a slightly narrower aperture, of around f/5.6 or f/8; this would have got a little more of the butterfly in focus, while still blurring the background. The lack of punch in the greens makes the image appear a little bland, but this is easily fixed by boosting the contrast with a Levels adjustment layer in Elements. There’s also a lot of surrounding space that doesn’t add anything to the image, so we’ve cropped into the image slightly, and to help focus attention on the subject even more we’ve added a subtle vignette to bring in the corners of the image, using Elements’ Correct Camera Distortion filter.”

1 Good timing and composition to capture such a delicate and elusive subject

2 The subject’s eye is nice and sharp, but you could have made more of the

butterfly sharp while still blurring the background effectively

3 There’s too much negative space – the butterfly could be more prominent

Here’s how Sarah can enhance her butterfl y shot in Elements…

Levels Finally, to increase the contrast in the image, add a Levels adjustment layer. Move the Shadows slider in to 33, the Midtones slider right to 0.85 and the Highlights slider right to 247 to enhance the overall impact.

CropSelect the Crop tool, and choose the ‘Use Photo Ratio’ option if you want to keep the proportions of the image the same. Crop in on the butterfl y, keeping it off-centre in the left of the shot.

Darken the corners Next we’ll add a subtle vignette effect to bring in the corners, and draw the eye towards the subject. Go to Filter > Correct Camera Distortion, and in the Vignette panel set Amount to -27 and Midpoint to +34.
