What is Photoshop?
Photoshop is the leading professional image-editing program, released by Adobe. Photoshop is useful for both creating and
editing images to be used in print or online.
Bitmap (raster)
Photoshop is a bitmap based program. Bitmap images are made up of pixels in a grid. Pixels are picture elements; tiny squares of individual color
that make up what you see on your screen.
Resolution Bitmap images are resolution dependent.
Resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image and is usually stated as dpi (dots
per inch) or ppi (pixels per inch). The higher the resolution, the
clearer the photo.
Vocabulary: Raster: Raster images are made of pixels. A pixel is
a single point or the smallest single element in a display device. If you zoom in to a raster image you
may start to see a lot of little tiny squares.
Vector: Vector images are mathematical calculations from one point to another that form lines and shapes. If you zoom into a vector graphic it will always look the
same.
JPEG/JPG Joint Photographic Experts Group
• JPEGS are for high-quality Photographs and realistic images. • Lossy – permanently eliminates certain data when compressed which reduces file size. • Looks fine from a distance but loss of quality when zoomed in.
PNG Portable Network Graphics
• PNG – used for creating iconic graphics, line drawings, and text.
• Lossless – every single bit of data in original remains after file is uncompressed. • Files saved are much larger and sometimes too large to send.
PSD Photoshop File
• PSD files are original artwork with layers. • PSD files are meant to be edited. • PSD files are often large and not easily shareable.
Always save a PSD version of your work so you can edit in the future.
