The development of newsphotography in the 19thcentury supported claims bynewspapers that theyreported events as theyhappened, objectively.

Today, the ethics ofphotojournalism goes farbeyond the ethics of thenewspaper photo. It includesthe millions of news-relatedimages that appear on ourtelevisions, cell phones, computer screens and othermulti-media devices. We arean image-saturated world.

    Ethics in Photojournalism:

    Manipulation of Digital Images

With Photoshop and theavailability of many editingprograms, photos can be editedto change the meaning of thepicture

    Example: After OJ Simpson was

arrested for the murder of hiswife, both Newsweek and TimeMagazine released his mugshot except Time Magazinedarkened the image in order tomake him seem more guilty

    Time Magazine was criticized

Issue was exceptionallycontroversial because he wasstill on trial at the time and theseimages could easily affect thejury, even if they were isolatedfrom the public

    Ethics in Photojournalism:

Intrusion of Privacy When is it legitimate to

take pictures of people inprivate moments?

Should photojournalistscapture images ofpoliticians, movie stars andother public figures in

    private spaces? Should photojournalists

take shots of families ingrief, or victims of tragedy?

The public perception ofthe journalist, and of the

news media in general, has suffered fromunjustified intrusions intoprivacy.

The ethical question is:When is intrusion justified?

    Ethics of Photojournalism:

    Graphic or Shocking Images

How graphic should -- ormust -- images be to tell thenews story?

If news outlets use graphicpictures of war, they are

accused of exploiting thepain of others. If they avoidgraphic photos, they areaccused of sanitizing theconflict.

    What criteria should guide

photo decisions -- local orcommunity standards?Newsworthiness? Dramaticimpact? A commitment to tellthe whole truth?

What is the realjournalistic value of thephotographs? What dothey prove and why arethey news? Do theydispel or affirminformation the publichad prior to seeing theimages?

By looking at the photosin terms of what theyadd to the news, editors

should be able todetermine whetherpublication isappropriate.
