Edward S. Curtis spent more than 30 years of his life photographing over 80 North American Indian tribes west of the Mississippi. The arts in Native American life were extensively recorded by Curtis including stories, music, and images of decorative objects. In the texts that were part of The North American Indian collection, he recorded volume after volume of myths and legends. Musical compositions were written down for posterity. The skill and craftsmanship displayed in ceremonial and everyday objects were richly preserved in thou-sands of images.

Accompanying the Curtis images in the exhibition will be nine works of rare Native American basketry and pottery from the private collection of Dubuque collector Mary Ellyn Jensen. These special pieces will give visitors stunning three dimensional examples of the skill and beauty captured in Curtis’ work.

The North American Indian collection came to the Dubuque Museum of Art’s permanent collection in 2009 thanks to the efforts of the Dubuque Cultural Preservation Committee, an Iowa gen-eral partnership, consisting of Dr. Darryl K. Mozena, Jeffrey P. Mozena, Mark Falb, Timothy J. Conlon, and Dr. Randy Lengeling.

The exhibition opens to the public, Sat-urday, November 23rd at 1:00 PM.

This exhibition is made possible in part by a grant from the

Sumi-e is characterized by an economy of strokes and tonal variations. Karen stud-ied the technique for over 10 years and has evolved her imagery into a new Ameri-can-style sumi-e that uses traditional inks, brushes, and papers in bold new ways.

Many of the works in this exhibition are inspired by the beauty and power of nature. They exude peacefulness and meditation but an un-dercurrent of the force of

nature flows through each image. Karen makes these works her own by combining an Impressionistic style with traditional sumi-e. One can discern in each painting a sense of a landscape or a waterscape, a tree shape is visible here and there, but these are not direct representations. They are the feelings and impressions from experiences that left a memo-rable impact on the artist.

CURRENT EXHIBITS

ARTHUR GEISERT’Saesop & companybaLcoNY GaLLerYTHROUGH JANUARy 12

The Ancient Greek tales of Aesop’s Fables are legendary in the Western world and their moral lessons are woven into the fabric of our culture. Tales like The Boy Who Cried Wolf or The Tortoise and The Hare are still referenced regularly in popular culture and read nightly by parents to their children. While the life and even the existence of Aesop remains a mystery, the stories live on and play a very real part in children’s literature today.

On view for the first time at Dubuque Museum of Art are six etchings from Arthur Geisert’s nineteen illustrations for Aesop & Company With Scenes From His Legendary Life by Barbara Bader [HMH Books for young Readers, 1991]. Geisert’s blend of naturalistic local landscapes with animated, expressive figures brings these stories to life with a Midwest spin.

Born and educated in Califor-nia, Arthur Geisert has lived in the Midwest for the majority of his artistic career, including Galena, Illinois and currently Bernard, Iowa. He

has illustrated over 25 children’s books for which he has received numerous awards including three New york Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book Awards.

Dubuque Museum of Art is proud to be the repository for Arthur’s work and his work has come to us thanks to the generosity of Arthur Geisert, Bonnie Geisert and Jack and Mantea Schmid.

Two Nicolai Fechin paintings that are on long-term loan to Dubuque Museum of Art return for an encore exhibi-tion. Entitled Portrait of an Indian Boy and Portrait of an Indian Girl, these images are an excellent representation of Fechin’s loose style and Taos School subject matter. We are grateful to be able to offer these wonderful works by such a masterful artist for our visitors to enjoy once more.

The Fechin paintings are accompanied by a selection of new acquisitions to the DuMA permanent collection by artists Nancy Purington, Francesco Licciardi, Emily Christenson, Cynthia Nelms-Byrne, and Richard Moninski.

As always, the Museum is pleased to present an excel-lent representation of our world-class Grant Wood col-lection. This season’s offering includes a wonderful selec-tion of Wood’s Depression-era lithographs including December Afternoon, Fruits and Wild Flowers.

DRA gives Museum I.T. a big boost

The Dubuque Museum of Art is once again proud to have received a project grant from the Dubuque Racing Association. This year, the DRA provided a $10,000 grant to help upgrade the Museum’s much-outdated computer system.

Thanks to DRA support the Museum has just finished installing new computers, printers, servers, data storage and software to bring the Museum’s 7+ year old system up to date. Not only is the new system more efficient and able to run the latest software, it will also allow the Museum to take on new initiatives such as providing more online access to our permanent collection and providing membership, videos and other programs through an updated Museum website which will debut in the coming weeks.

The Museum is most grateful for DRA support. To date, the DRA Grant Program has provided the Museum with over $150,000 in direct financial support.
