The Assignment
To research individual photographers – not only their work as a practitioner but also their personality, background, influences etc.
‘how their personal life connects to their professional ‘
Why take the Library seriously
"On average those who gained a first-class honours degree borrowed twice as many items and logged into MetaLib (to access e-resources) over three times as much as those who achieved a third-class degree." —Dave Pattern, University of Huddersfield, interviewed in Cilip’s Library and Information Gazette, 2nd September 2010

Introduction
It is very tempting to go straight to the internet when you have a project to research.
You can glean lots of useful information from Google but where does it come from?
By using more books and journals for your research, you can be sure that material you are using comes from a sound academic background.
Adding some local colour
In order to get a more complete vision of your subject, you will be searching not only for books about, or by the photographer, but also books covering the culture, politics, art, philosophy etc. of the period.
The Catalogue
Using the catalogue, you can search for books, dvds, journals and ebooks
Reserve items
Request Interlibrary loans
NB:
Every module has a readinglist. Make sure you are familiar with resources lecturers have recommended. This will often give greater insight into the subject.
Don’t fixate on the photographer’s
name
Use alternative keywords
Modern photography
1940s art
1950s culture
1960s politics
Twenties, 20s, 1920s
Friends/Influences
Read through the material that you find – even just the introduction. You will find clues that will take you off on a new tangent

Edward Weston
Stieglitz
Beaumont Newhall
What are journals and why should
you use them?
More up to date than books

Concise
Different points of view
Some are available online
You can search for particular subjects using keywords
Much more reliable than Google or Wikipedia
Your lecturers want you to use a variety of sources
Hard copy and electronic
Some journals are only in hard copy form but some are electronic and can be found in Databases
Databases store information such as articles, reports, conference proceedings, reviews, research papers and statistical information covering a wide range of topics in electronic format.
Hardcopy Photography journals
Aperture
British Journal of Photography
Keyword searching
Using the databases, you can search by keyword – so you can find articles about that particular subject rather than simply scanning hard copies journals and crossing your fingers that you will find relevant articles.
Databases & E-Journals -

Database A – Z list
Using Databases - Combining
keywords
When using the databases, remember you must use keywords – you can’t put in whole sentences!
Combine your keywords together with ‘and’ to narrow your search.
Eg. Photograhers and punk rock or Rock Music
Photography and memory
Photography and meaning
Databases
Jstor – since this is not specifically a photography database, you will be able to approach your research from many different angles
Artbibliographies Modern – all abstracts but do not discount it. It is an important resource. And you can learn a lot from abstract!
Nexis– newspapers – obituaries
Ebsco – Academic Search Complete and Communication and Mass Media Complete
Bibliography/References
Pay attention to the bibliography at the end of the article/book. You may find other articles that will be of use.
Even when a book seems to be a vision resource, read the introduction.
Guides
Guides for all the databases are available from the stand next to the Enquiry Desk .
These are also available online
