PhotographingArtwork Youwillneedtophotographyourartworkinordertoshareitwithotherindividualwhoare participatinginthiscourse.Takinggoodphotographsofyourartworkisimportantsoother peoplecanunderstandwhatyouhavemade.Thisguideisintendedtohelpyouidentifyandfix someofthemostcommonproblemswithphotographingyourartwork.Itisnotdifficulttotake goodpicturesofyourartworkifyouarecarefulandattentivetowhatyouaredoing.Most commonproblemsarethesameforphotographingbothtwoandthree-dimensionalwork. Aboveyouwillseeasamplediagramofalightingsetupthatwillserveyouwellformost situations.Twolightsareangledat45degreeanglestotheartwork,withthecamerabetween thelights.Thissetupwillgiveyouafairlyevenlightontheartwork.Ifyouareaphotographing asculptureorotherthree-dimensionalartworkandfeellikethatsetupisnotgivingyouenough ofasenseofthevolumeofyourobjectyoucantrythesetupontheright,replacingoneofthe lightsourceswithawhitepieceofpaperorfoamcoretoreflectlightintotheshadowscastby theremaininglight.Anexampleofagoodphotographofapieceoftwo-dimensionalartworkis shownbelow.

Troubleshootingphotographsofart Istheartworkevenlylit?Ifnot,adjustthepositionofyourlightorartworksothat shadowsarentcastonit.Avoidusingyourflash,asthisoftencausesglare.Good sourcesoflightincludephotographingoutsideonacloudyday,inafullyshadedareaon asunnyday,orindoorswithlampsthatarenottoocloseandarenotataharshangleto theartwork. Doesyourartworkappeartherightcolor?Ifnot,youwillneedtoadjustwhitebalance. Checkyourcameramanualforhowtodothat.Youwillneedtoadjustyourwhite balanceifyourartworkappearstooyellow,blue,orgreen.Ifonlyonepartofyour artworkappearstobethewrongcolor,checktomakesurethatyouarentgettingstray lightfromanotherlightsource.Youcanseeanexampleofmixedlightsourcesinthe leftmostimageinthesectionaboutevenlightingabove.Differentsourcesoflight(light bulbs,daylight,fluorescentlights)aredifferentcolors,andmixingthemmaycausecolor problems.Youneedtoevenlylightyourartworkwithonekindoflight.

Isyourartworktoodarkortoolight?Youwillwantthephotographtobeinan appropriaterangetoseedetail.Mostcamerashaveacontrolcalledexposure compensationtocorrectforproblemswithexposure.Checkyourcameramanualfor howtousethisfunctionifyouhaveproblemswiththeimagebeingtoodarkorlight. Canyouseethewholeartwork?Isthecamerasquaretotheartwork?Ifyouare photographingatwodimensionalartwork,besurethatyouareincludingthewhole artworkintheframe.Chooseabackgroundthatisnotdistracting(anotherpieceof paper,apieceofcardboard,non-patternedcarpet,orsomethinglikethat).Avoid patternedordistractingbackgrounds.Ifyouhaveanartworkthatismadeofblackwire orsomethinglikethat,youwillwanttophotographitinfrontofsomethinglightthatis notdistracting.Donotphotographyourtwodimensionalartworkfromthesideor fromanotherobliqueangle.Youneedtoaccuratelyrepresentwhatisinfrontofyouso otherscanseeitclearly.

Istheartworkinfocus?Tryzoomingintoasmallsectionofyourimageonyourcamera orcomputerandmakesureitisinfocus.Artworkcanappearblurryeitherfromthe cameranotfocusingproperlyorfrommovementduringthepicturetakingprocess. Generally,blurfrommovementwilllooksmeared(liketheimageontherightabove). Blurfromthelensfocusingincorrectlywilljustlookblurry(liketheimageontheleft above).Ifyouhaveblurfrommovement,useatripod,stabilizethecameraagainsta steadysurface,oruseabrightersourceoflighttoreduceblur.
