A Procedural Text Children’s Book

A Note to Parents, Caregivers, & Teachers…

Why Health Literacy?

Why Procedural Text?

This children’s book is great to encourage kids to be active using teamwork and cooperation. Encouraging kids to be active is very essential for their growing bodies. Movement is important for their muscles, bones, and joints, as well as decreasing their chances of developing health problems. The game “High Flyers” keeps kids active in many areas: (1) Locomotion – running, shuffle step, & cross over step; (2) Movement – agility & body awareness; (3) Manipulative – striking & kicking; (4) Social – interaction, support, cooperation, & sharing.

I decided to write this book in the procedural text form so kids could learn the rules of the game. Even if the kids already know the way to play the game “High Flyers”, this book contains many variations of the game to make it harder and/or more interesting.

1

Before you can play, you have to make sure everyone has 1 balloon.

2

Because you do not want anyone to get hurt, you should warm up and stretch your muscles before you start playing.

3Then throw your balloon in the air!

Try not to stand to close together, so try spread out!

4This means you have to cooperate with everyone playing the game!

Try to keep all the balloons in the air as long as possible, not just your own balloon.

5

You can use any body part to keep the balloons in the air!

Like your hands or your elbows!

6

Or your feet and your knees!

7You can even use your head!

8

If you find the game too easy, you can try adding more balloons than there are players.

9

You can also try using only one method to keep the balloons in the air. For example, just your elbows!

I hope you have fun playing the game “High Flyers”. Remember, it will be easier if everyone works together and communicates. ☺

This book was developed in partial fulfillment of KIN 180: A Growth & Development Course at the University of Regina, 2012

The writer, Kelsey Zuchkan, grew up on a farm near Foam Lake, SK. She is now going into her second year at the University of Regina, studying Nursing.

The purpose of this procedural text children’s book, “High Flyers”, is to encourage kids to stay active by teaching them how to play the game “High Flyers”. It also shows children that you can put variety to the game in order to make it harder and more challenging.
