Simple rules for photography with non-metriccameras
for the Photogrammetric Documentation ofArchitecture
– 3 x 3 geometric
– 3 x 3 photographic
– 3 x 3 organisational
CIPA 3x3-Rules
![Page 19: Photogrammetry in Heritage Documentationclose-range.com/docs/Photogrammetry_in_heritage...automated or semi-automated feature extraction from 3D point clouds ) • Accuracy photogrammetry](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070109/60442dfd3567656a81342b7f/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
1 - The 3 geometric rules
1.1 - Provide control information:
- At least one long distance between well defined points, ifpossible targets.
- At least one plumb-line (in form of a long plumb lines or byplumbing down from high point and targeting the foot of the plumbline)
Should be done on several sides of the building for control.
Minimum metric information- one distance- one plumb-line
![Page 20: Photogrammetry in Heritage Documentationclose-range.com/docs/Photogrammetry_in_heritage...automated or semi-automated feature extraction from 3D point clouds ) • Accuracy photogrammetry](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070109/60442dfd3567656a81342b7f/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
1.2 - Multiple photographic all-around coverage:
• Take a "ring" of pictures all around the object, overlapping each other morethan 50%.
• Take shots from half the object´s height, if possible.
• Include parts of the neighbourhood.
• Add diagonal shots combining two sides of the object.
• Add traversing shots combining neighbouring photographs.
• Include also the roof, if possible.
• Check multiple coverage carefully.
• Add orthogonal full facade shots for overview and rectification.
![Page 21: Photogrammetry in Heritage Documentationclose-range.com/docs/Photogrammetry_in_heritage...automated or semi-automated feature extraction from 3D point clouds ) • Accuracy photogrammetry](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070109/60442dfd3567656a81342b7f/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)

• 1.3 – take Stereopartners/pairs for stereo-restitution:
• Stereopairs are taken as– normal case (base-distance-ratio 1:4 to 1: 15), or– convergent case (base-distance-ratio 1:10 to 1: 15).
• Avoid divergent case.
• Add close-up stereopairs for valuable details and measure additionalcontrol distances for these or add a rod to the object.
• Check stereo-coverage carefully.
• In case of doubt, add more shots and measures "by hand" whatever remainsinvisible.
![Page 23: Photogrammetry in Heritage Documentationclose-range.com/docs/Photogrammetry_in_heritage...automated or semi-automated feature extraction from 3D point clouds ) • Accuracy photogrammetry](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070109/60442dfd3567656a81342b7f/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
• The 3 photographic rules
2.1 - The inner geometry of the camera has to be kept constant:
• No zooming! Use end position, or avoid zoom optics at all, or fix focus ofoptics by adhesive tape.
• No focus setting changes. Fix to indefinite, or to mean distance usingadhesive tape. Use different lenses and fix– one focus for "ring"-photography– one focus for close-ups.
• Image format frame of camera must be sharply visible on the images withgood contrast.
• Don’t cut into format when cutting the original film or don’t crop thedigital image.
• Do not rotate the digital image• Do only use loss free compression the image for digital images• If you have to enhance the image digitally, keep a copy of the original
image separately
![Page 24: Photogrammetry in Heritage Documentationclose-range.com/docs/Photogrammetry_in_heritage...automated or semi-automated feature extraction from 3D point clouds ) • Accuracy photogrammetry](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070109/60442dfd3567656a81342b7f/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
2.2 - Select homogenous illumination:
• Plan the best time of day (avoid heavy shadows) .
• Use tripod and cable release, or time delay, for sharp images.
• Any film may be used. Black-and-white is sufficient, colourprovides advantages for interpretation and documents also thecolours.
• Digital is best only IF the camera is high quality
![Page 25: Photogrammetry in Heritage Documentationclose-range.com/docs/Photogrammetry_in_heritage...automated or semi-automated feature extraction from 3D point clouds ) • Accuracy photogrammetry](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070109/60442dfd3567656a81342b7f/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
2.3 - Select most stable and largest format camera available:
• Wide angle is better than narrow angle for all-around photography.
• Medium format is better than small format.
• Calibrated (or metric) cameras are better than non-metric.
• Camera must have focus which can be fixed.
![Page 26: Photogrammetry in Heritage Documentationclose-range.com/docs/Photogrammetry_in_heritage...automated or semi-automated feature extraction from 3D point clouds ) • Accuracy photogrammetry](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070109/60442dfd3567656a81342b7f/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
3 - The 3 organizational rules
3.1 - Make proper sketches:
• Ground plan and
• Elevation of each side (1:100 - 1: 500).
• Mark north direction and
• Photo standpoints (with film and negative number or digital counter) andphoto directions.
• Mark single photo coverages and stereo coverages.
• Show control points (if any) , control distances and plumb-lines.

3.2 - Write proper protocols:
• Object, owner, address.
• Date.
• Camera, optics, focus and distance settings.
• Calibration report, if available.
• Description of place, object, history.
• Bibliography.
• Specials, artists, architects, permissions, obligations, etc.
•

3.3.3 Final check:
• Write down everything immediately.• Check completeness and correctness before leaving the site.• Conclude the reports while you remember all details.• Check the results at home together with an authority for monuments and
sites.• Plan next project bearing in mind any mistake made previously. Learn."

• no obvious outliers at an accuracy level of 10 mm(no surface spikes as from image matching)
Laser Scanning Versus Photogrammetry
Laser Scanning
• Direct and immediate in situ access to the scandata
• dense data for surfaces with little texture
• point cloud without any additional processing.Subsequent processing is similar to that forphotogrammetry.
• only one set-up is required for each surface.
![Page 47: Photogrammetry in Heritage Documentationclose-range.com/docs/Photogrammetry_in_heritage...automated or semi-automated feature extraction from 3D point clouds ) • Accuracy photogrammetry](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070109/60442dfd3567656a81342b7f/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Laser Scanning Versus Photogrammetry
Photogrammetry
• User-selected points
• Vector data, edges, corners and decorative detail(high-resolution sub-scans and algorithms forautomated or semi-automated feature extractionfrom 3D point clouds )
• Accuracy
photogrammetry higher for targeted points and for naturalpoints surfaces at short distances (5m to 15 m).
at larger distances (30 to 60) the accuracies ofphotogrammetry and laser scanning is similar
distances approaching 100 m laser scanning appears toprovide slightly higher accuracies

Laser Scanning Versus Photogrammetry (cont.)
Photogrammetry
• camera significantly lighter, easier to transport and morerobust under field conditions
• photogrammetrically acquired photography providespermanent records, allowing originally unplannedmeasurements of detail at a later stage
• for highly textured surfaces, point clouds can begenerated at higher densities than laser scans. ( repeatscans with slightly modified orientations)
• significantly less expensive than laser scanning equipment

Requirements considered in the design of
camera stations and orientations :
1. The need for multiple images for surface generation by
multi-image geometrically-constrained matching with an
in-house software.
2. Cameras oriented with image plane parallel to principal surfaces
(walls) : to provide data for the generation of ortho-images.
3. Oblique and rotated photographs - to strengthen the geometry ofthe photogrammetric triangulations.
4. Multiple diagonal photographs at both, convex & concave building
corners to provide links between surfaces in rectangular orientation.
5. Photographs from different elevations - to obtain texture and
detail for the up and down surfaces of ledges, windows, and doors.
