Photorealism
20th Century Art Movement
Photorealism:
American and European art movement in the 1960’s and 70’s in which artists produced realist paintings and sculptures involving
thorough reproduction of detail. In painting the results were nearly photographic, and artists often used photographs as source material.

Vocabulary:
Color – The Element of Art that is derived from reflected light.
Complementary Colors – Colors that are opposite from one another on the color wheel. For example: red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple. When mixed, complementary colors produce brown.
STILL LIFE
Use a viewfinder. Create a balanced
composition.
Draw at least 8 objects
Draw the contours first.
Draw large/light and sketchy/with a pencil.
Draw the table.
Don’t draw the whole still life.
Vocabulary:
Chalk Pastel – A colored drawing material made from ground pigment with a binder added. Pastels offer more brilliant colors than crayons without the drying time of paint.
Oil Pastel – A colored drawing material comprised of pigment and a binder that is similar in consistency to crayons or wax.
STILL LIFE
Use oil and/or chalk pastel.
Make things look shiny with highlights and
shadows.
Use shadows. Make them by mixing
complementary colors.
Make your objects look 3D.
“Color”/ “Shade” the WHOLE page. (Including
table and Negative Space (“air”).
NO BLACK!
