America is known throughoutthe world as a land of eco-nomic opportunity available

to all its citizens to freely pursuewithin the established laws of theland. This economic opportunity ispredicated on our fundamental free-doms that were established by ourforefathers upon their arrival toAmerica when they subscribed tothe Mayflower Compact in 1620.The compact basically acknowl-edged that God was the author of themoral foundation that man shouldlive by, which brought forth and es-tablished civil law and order. Thistheme carried on and eventually be-came an integral part of the Bill ofRights and then incorporated within

The United States Constitution. This free Nation, with our demo-cratic republic form of government, along with our economic opportuni-ties, is a direct result of God’s bless-ing and prophecy concerning thisland that we call America, as re-corded in the Book of Mormon.

America’s industry, after WorldWar II, once focused on defeating theevil that had raised its ugly head totake away individual freedom ofchoice, now focused its attention toeconomic growth and opportunity. With this focus came products andgoods that Americans at the turn ofthe 20th century only dreamed of.Stores of all types with goods andservices were now available to con-sumers to choose from. Gone werethe days when our choices for prod-ucts and/or goods were made simplebecause of the availability or costwas beyond our reach.

This present generation, sev-eral generations removed from thedays of scarcity and want, is facedwith the new challenge of having toomany choices at their disposal, caus-ing what I would call “choice fa-tigue,” or too much of a good thing. Now people are making choicesbased on convenience, pleasure andpersonal gratification, which is tak-ing its toll on Americans as a whole. Our physical bodies and spiritualhealth are in total disarray where weare suffering the ill effects or conse-quences from the freedom of choiceswe have made in our lives.

God has granted all His cre-

ation the right or freedom to “Indi-vidual Choice.” In the words of Lehiwe find the following statement con-cerning that freedom granted:

“For there is a God, and he hathcreated all things, both the heavensand the earth, and all things that inthem is; Both things to act, andthings to be acted upon;” (2 Nephi1:95-96).

We are the “things to act” andthe choices before us are “things tobe acted upon.” I should also state,by the Word of God, all of this libertycomes by way of Jesus Christ.

As with the freedoms we enjoyin this nation there are conse-quences, for good or bad, which canlead to our untimely death. Ourspiritual freedom of choice comeswith consequences as well: eternallife or death.

In all cases life-changingchoices can be made, pardons can begranted, and forgiveness obtained, but the consequence of our choices,in this life, will live with us untildeath.

“Who is a God like unto thee, thatpardoneth iniquity, and passeth bythe transgression of the remnant ofhis heritage? he retaineth not hisanger for ever, because he delightethin mercy. He will turn again, he willhave compassion upon us; he willsubdue our iniquities; and thou wiltcast all their sins into the depths ofthe sea” Micah 7:18-19.

Looking back onforty-six years ofmarriage to my wife

Margret, I can clearlysee the learning experi-ence involved. Butmore importantly I cansee how beautifully andpractically God’s wordlays out a pattern that,if followed devotedly, leads to satisfaction andjoy.

Like many men Itried a more selfish wayof conducting marriage. As a result my marriagebecame a separationand pending divorce.Wisely, we let God’sword and the influenceof the Holy Ghost inter-vene in our lives at thatcritical time. We alsosought counsel from anuninvolved person withknowledge of scriptureand the nuances of hu-man behavior. These actionshelped turn us away from thedestructive course we hadbeen on to a more charitableand forgiving course, saving

our marriage. Caring friendsand relatives also helped bytheir prayers, and by not tak-ing sides or spreading gossip.Twenty-nine years of growing

love and devotion toour marriage have fol-lowed, like a flowergradually opening toits full-bloomedbeauty. So I feel anabiding desire to sharewith other husbandsthoughts drawn frommy experiences andfrom the word of God.

Four scripturalprinciples come tomind when I contem-plate what actions onmy part resulted in joyand satisfaction in mymarriage. They are inthe Bible and Book ofMormon simply stated, easy to remember andsimple to apply. But de-termination and sacri-fice are required in theapplication, the sameas with any serious ef-fort for good in ourlives.

First: Leave your growingup family and make a new fam-ily with your wife. Memorizethese words spoken by ourSavior in answer to a Phari-

see’s question:

“—He which made themat the beginning made themmale and female, and said,For this cause shall a manleave father and mother, andshall cleave to his wife: andthey twain shall be one flesh.Wherefore they are no moretwain, but one flesh…”(Matt 19:5-6).

A husband must take thiscommandment literally.Throw off any influences, ef-forts and opinions from yourformer family that do nothonor and respect your wife, and devote yourself first andforemost to her needs and theneeds of your new family. Youare her husband. Act like it allthe time.

Second: Be the love leaderin your home and family. Dedi-cate yourself unselfishly tothis cause, making all neces-sary sacrifices. ConsiderPaul’s words to the church atEphesus:

“Husbands, love yourwives, even as Christ lovedthe church, and gave himselffor it…” (Eph 5:25).

Memorize that statementand link it in your mind tothese words from I John:

“Herein is our love madeperfect, that we may haveboldness in the day of judge-ment: because as he is, so arewe in this world. There is nofear in love; but perfect lovecasteth out fear…. We lovehim because he first loved

us.” (1 John 4:17-19).

When a husband whole-heartedly, without fear, loveshis wife with a perfect love likethe love of Christ for Hischurch (not waiting for her to

prove her love for him), he willfind a happy, responsive andsubmissive wife in his house. When God made them maleand female he designed him(that’s you, husband) to initi-ate love, and her to respond tothat love. If you are not get-ting the response you expect itis time to take stock of whatyou are initiating.

Third: Be the prime exam-ple of charity and forgivenessin your home, just as Christ isfor the church. Remember it ispart of loving first to forgivefirst if trouble arises betweenyou and your wife. Pray dailyfor the pure love of Christ to al-ways be in your heart. Readand reread the followingverses often:

“Put on therefore as theelect of God, holy and be-loved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness ofmind, meekness, long-suf-fering, forbearing one an-other, and forgiving one an-other, if any man have aquarrel against any: even asChrist forgave you, so also

do ye. And above all thesethings put on charity, whichis the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rulein your hearts…” (Col3:12-15).

So if you quarrel, insteadof being the first to placeblame for the disagreement, bethe first to forgive in the sameway as Christ has forgivenyou. Forgiveness is notwords—it is action. This in-cludes the action of exercisingthe pure love of Christ (all ofit) toward her, just as Christhas done toward the Church, and as part of this exercise ini-tiating a discussion of possiblesolutions to the problem, re-flecting on the will of God foryour marriage. Memorize thekey words in this passage ex-plaining the pure love ofChrist:

“And charity sufferethlong, and is kind, andenvieth not, and is not puffedup, seeketh not her own, isnot easily provoked, thinkethno evil, and rejoiceth not ininiquity, but rejoiceth intruth, beareth all things, be-lieveth all things, hopeth allthings, endureth all things;wherefore, cleave unto char-ity, which is the greatest ofall, for all things must fail;but charity is the pure love of

You are her husband. Act like it allthe time.

Christ and it endureth forever…pray unto the Fatherwith all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with thislove…that when he shall ap-pear, we shall be like him…”(Moroni 7:51- 53).

An honest reading ofthese verses will illuminateyour strengths and your weak-nesses. Review them oftenand work daily to improve bystrengthening your weakareas. Are you easily pro-voked? Discuss it with yourwife. Let her help you to knowwhen you are showing anger. Are you seeking your own (ma-nipulating situations to getthings the way you want themwithout proper regard for yourwife’s needs and wishes)? Dis-cuss your desires and herswith your wife on a regular ba-sis to avoid the fallout thatcomes from selfish behavior.Examine each point of yourpractice of charity in this man-ner, seeking your wife’s input.Soon she will be doing thesame in response to yourlead—because you have firstloved her enough to provideher with an improved hus-band—you.

Fourth: Constantly testyour success as a husband.Call it marriage maintenance.

It is at least as important asauto maintenance or keepingyour rifle clean for deer hunt-ing. A wise husband checksoften to see if the fruit of thespirit is intact in his life and in

his household. Memorize thechecklist Paul gave to theGalations:

“But the fruit of the Spiritis love, joy, peace, long suf-fering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance:against such there is no law”(Gal 5:22).

If these things are not allpresent in your marriage it istime to seek, with your wife, the intervention of God’sSpirit in your marriage inprayer and take the lead in aneffort to restore what is miss-ing. If the task is too difficult, seek help from good counselbefore it is too late. Rememberthe condition of your marriageeffects more than just you andyour wife. It leaves its markfor good or bad for generationsto come.

“The Lord is long-suffer-ing, and of great mercy, for-giving iniquity and trans-gression, and by no meansclearing the guilty, visitingthe iniquity of the fathers

upon the children unto thethird and fourth generation”(Numbers 14:18).

Look around. You can seethis truth played out in manyfamilies. So we’re talking seri-ous business here. Where doyou stand as a husband if youare not keeping all of God’scommandments in regard tocharity and forgiveness inyour marriage? Make a com-mitment to do it right for thesake of your wife, your kids, your church family and futuregenerations.

So to summarize, the fourprinciples I have offered hereare:

1Leave your growing up familyand make a new family with yourwife as Jesus taught in Matt19:5-6.

2Be the love leader in your homeas suggested in Eph 5:25 and IJohn 4:19.

3Be the prime example of charityand forgiveness in your homeas taught in Col 13:12-15 andMoroni 7:51-53.

4Constantly test your success asa husband using as your indica-tor the fruit of the Spirit as de-scribed in Gal 5:22.

May God direct and blessyour effort,

Elder Glenn Gill

“…Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God” Job 37:14.By Janice Welch

The world today is very busy.We human beings exist in atime when electronic sights

and sounds bombard us fromall sides. Images of worldlytemptations are displayed allover the landscape and in themarketplace. Sounds of wick-edness, pictures of evil are dis-played on screens in public andin the privacy of the home. There is very little time that issilent in our daily lives. We areconstantly distracted by theconcepts these images andsounds represent. It is hard tohear God.

In the perfection of EdenAdam and Eve experienced allthe joys of God’s blessings and

creation. The greatest joy wasthe daily presence and com-panionship they shared withthe Lord Himself. This joycontinued as long as those firsthuman beings spent their timelistening to, and focusing theirattention and activities on,God and His voice. Then Sa-tan entered— intent on hisgoal—to distract his victimsfrom the voice and guidance ofGod. Satan appealed to theirphysical senses in temptingthem to doubt God’s word andto believe a lie. He appealed totheir human nature.

What is the driving forceof human nature? It is to sat-isfy the physical senses. Phys-ical senses respond to variousstimuli: sights, sounds, smells,

textures, temperatures, thoughts. THOUGHTS? Doour physical senses respond tothoughts? Thought is: reason-ing power; the power to imag-ine; the process of thinking. The definition of think is: toform or have in the mind; tohave an opinion (believe); toreflect on (ponder); to call tomind. Notice that the MIND ismentioned in this definition asthe location of our thinking—our thoughts.

Where are the physicalsenses located? They exist inthe body—the flesh, bone andblood body. What is it that op-erates the body?THOUGHTS. Our thoughts—which come from our soul, our spirit, our MIND—operate

our body. Solomon states that“…as he thinketh in his heart,so is he…” (Proverbs 23:7).Our thoughts generate andcontrol the actions of our phys-ical body. The Scriptures arefull of references to show thatit is by thought that we will bejudged.

King Benjamin warnedhis people: “But this much Ican tell you, that if you do notwatch yourselves, and yourthoughts, and your words, andyour deeds, and observe tokeep the commandments ofGod, and continue in the faithof what ye have heard concern-ing the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives,ye must perish” (Mosiah 2:49).Alma warns that our thoughtswill condemn us in his answerto Antoniah (see Alma9:22-25). Christ warned Hisdisciples against evil thoughts(see Matt 15:19). In Hebrews4:12 Paul says, “For the wordof God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than anytwo-edged sword, piercingeven to the dividing asunder ofsoul and spirit, and of thejoints and marrow, and is adiscerner of the thoughts andintents of the heart.”

God has placed us onearth to make a choice be-tween eternal life or eternaldeath. He has created allthings as a means for each soulto choose either to serve Himand be redeemed through theatonement of Christ and re-turned to His presence, or toreject Him and be forever cut

off from Him. He gave us abody to house our soul, ourspirit—to use as a means ofmaking our choices.

“What, know ye not thatyour body is the temple of theHoly Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and yeare not your own. For ye arebought with a price: thereforeglorify God in your body, andin your spirit, which areGod’s” (1st Corinthians6:19-20). Our bodies are to bethe Lord’s temple. God hasplaced our souls in a structurethat will, by one means or an-other, cease to exist. The soulHe has given us will not ceaseto exist—ever. The “temple”has a finite allotment of time.It serves as a vehicle by whichour soul will travel the path ofour daily life. God has given usthe right, the privilege, thetask of choosing the path. Our path determines our des-tination: the place where oursoul will exist through eter-nity. (Eternity being a conceptbeyond our comprehension.)Our path goes through the ge-ography of our daily lives. To acertain extent, we choose thegeography through which wetravel. How do we do this? Wedo it by the choices we make inevery thing we do, say,THINK. We do it by how wechoose to occupy our timewhile our soul dwells in ourbody—our temple.

How do we occupy ourtime? With what do we fill ourtemple? What substances, sights, sounds, pastimes,

adornments, nourishment, thoughts, do we use to occupyand decorate our temple? Towhat being do we bring honorand glory in our temple?

We must seek shelter, safety, nourishment to keepthe body alive and able tomake choices. Nourishmentmeans 1. to provide with foodor substances necessary forlife and growth. 2. to foster thedevelopment of; to promote.

When our basic needs aremet, we seek things and peoplethat give us “pleasure.” Inthis current portion of the fi-nite time that God has allottedfor all mankind, people havean enormous amount of “free”time, and seek entertain-ment as a means of filling thattime and experiencing “plea-sure.” What is entertain-ment? It is popularly de-scribed as activity designed torelax, to take one’s MIND offof the dreary aspect of main-taining the basic needs of ourself, or our family—toDISTRACT.

Do we have any basicneeds other than shelter, safety, nourishment? Yes. Weneed salvation. Satan de-sires, and constantly strives,to DISTRACT us from anawareness of that great need, and from the effort that mustbe made to achieve it. Whatdoes Satan use to distract us?He appeals to our human na-ture just as he did in the Gar-den. He offers us many tempt-ing ways to spend our time andoccupy our thoughts. One ex-

ample could be music. Most people spend some

time listening to, or produc-ing, music. Music is sound—noise consisting of combina-tions of any or all of the follow-ing: melody, rhythm, words(thoughts!). Music is definedas: the art of arranging soundsin time to produce a composi-tion that elicits an aesthetic(“aesthetic”: from Greek wordfor sense perception) responsein a listener. Music occupies awide range of type, style—even PURPOSE. Somepeople have an appreciationfor music, some have a talentfor it. Some cannot produce it,nor perceive it. Music is gener-ally regarded as a form of“art,” the use of skill andimagination in the productionof things of beauty.

There is a common ax-iom— “beauty is in the eye ofthe beholder,” implying thatwhat one individual finds aes-thetically pleasing may not beso to another, and that there isno standard. Is there a Godlystandard for beauty in artforms? Yes, there is. There aremany references in God’s holyword that could be quoted, buta most simple direct statementwas made by Paul to theThessalonians: “Abstain fromall appearance of evil” (1stThessalonians 5:22).

Music that containssounds, images, words(thoughts) that are degrad-ing, violent, profane, lewd—orin any way UN-Christlike ap-peals to that base human na-

ture that the Lord has put ushere to overcome. If we fill upthe mind of our “temple” withthese “nourishments”—whatwill we promote—what will wecause to grow in our soul? Canwe judge (make a choice basedon a standard) the nature andsource of the music we listento? Current “popular music”can be described—at best—as“frivolous” (1. unworthy of se-rious attention; trivial. 2. in-appropriately silly.), at worst –containing a very dangerous“appearance of evil.” It dis-tracts us, as do other carnaltemptations—liquor, ciga-rettes, drugs, partying, etc.,—from the voice of God.To distract us from His voice isthe express purpose of Satan.

We run a grave risk of be-coming addicted to and mak-ing an idol of thesedistractions—the carnal, worldly things. “And whatagreement hath the temple ofGod with idols? For ye are thetemple of the living God: AsGod hath said, I will dwell inthem, and walk in them; and Iwill be their God, and theyshall be my people. Wherefore, come out from among themand be ye separate, saith theLord, and touch not the un-clean thing, and I will receiveyou, and be a Father unto you,and ye shall be my sons anddaughters saith the Almighty(2nd Corinthians 6:16-18).

Can we hear His voicewhen we fill the ears of our“temple” with “uncleanthings”? Will He walk in our

“temple” when we fill it with“unclean things” viewed? Wecan not. He will not. We mustkeep our ears, eyes, thoughtsready to hear, see, think Hisword. Nephi advises us:“Wherefore, I said unto you,Feast upon the words ofChrist; for behold the words ofChrist will tell you all thingswhat ye should do” (2ndNephi 14:4). Christ’s ownwords state what He expects ofus: “Take heed therefore thatthe light which is in thee benot darkness. If thy wholebody therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the wholeshall be full of light, as wherethe bright shining of a candledoth give the light” (Luke11:35-26).

If Christ were to enter theroom as we are “relaxing,”could we face Him with a clearmind, with a body (temple) fullof light?

Christ is, of course, al-ways in the room with us. Hewould always speak to us inthat “still, small voice.” Howcan we hear Him? By abstain-ing from, and by avoiding thedistractions that Satan dan-gles before our eyes, our ears, our thoughts, our senses.

Listen to the silence, instillness, considering His won-drous work.

“Be still and know that Iam God:…” (Psalm 46:10).

By Elder Glenn Gill, Ph.D.

For my tenth birthday mymother gave me a book ti-tled The Wonders of Biol-

ogy. The subject captured myinterest and as years went byI earned college degrees in Bi-ology education and a doctor-ate in invertebrate zoology. With that background I origi-nated, conducted and super-vised biological and ecologi-cal research projects andtaught biological sciences inhigh school and communitycollege.

I did not grow up with achurch affiliation. Duringmy college years I had an am-bition to study and do re-search in organic evolution. So why, in an increasinglysecular and anti-Christianworld, do I believe those firstfive words Moses wrote at thebeginning of the Book of Gen-esis? My objective here is togive an answer to that ques-tion for myself and for themany others educated inscience who believe that Godis the architect and creator oflife in all of its fascinating andvaried forms.

“In the beginning, Godcreated.” By these five pow-erful words Moses gave sci-ence an infinitely reliablebase from which to observeand explain. Creation is pur-poseful action. It requires aplan, a reason to execute theplan and a need to have pro-cesses and procedures inplace for that execution. Inshort: an intelligent designand the power and resourcesto bring it to fruition. Biolog-ical science has been un-knowingly uncovering evi-

dence for this design and theaccompanying power and re-sources for more than a cen-tury by using establishedmethods of testing and obser-vation in an effort to explainand predict what occurs innature.

Microbiologists and or-ganic chemists have piecedtogether an extensive under-standing of how living organ-isms and our own organs andindividual cells, function toproduce and use life givingand life sustaining sub-

stances. The more thesethings are understood themore there emerges a pictureof myriad sequential and cy-cling biochemical processesthat cannot operate in part.If any part is missing thewhole process will fail; there-fore, each sequence or cycle ofreactions must have origi-nated in complete form. Thispresents a situation knownas irreducible complexity.

Biochemists haveworked out many metaboliclife processes found in the ap-proximately three trillioncells present in our own bod-ies. They are called metabolicpathways and they have beencharted as sequences and cy-cles of identifiable biochemi-cal compounds found in liv-ing cells. A chart of all meta-bolic pathways currentlyknown in the human bodywould be much too large toprint on these pages. Thesepathways offer many illustra-tions of irreducible complex-ity and intelligent design. The following describes onesuch illustration:

The food molecule thatpowers the energy producingchemistry of nearly all livingthings is glucose from the di-gestion of carbohydrates. This process provides onesmall example of how meta-bolic pathways work. Withincells, energy derived fromglucose is held, carried andexchanged by an oscillation

between forms of a moleculecalled adenosine phosphate. When energy is available inthe cell adenosinediphosphate (ADP) becomesadenosine triphosphate

(ATP) by the addition of onephosphate unit. When en-ergy is needed for some pro-cess in the cell an enzymebreaks the phosphate bondthat formed ATP and themolecule returns to its ADPconfiguration. The breakingof this bond releases energyin the cell. This goes on in ev-ery cell of every living thing. The energy to cause these re-actions comes from a complexprocess which breaks downglucose molecules, uses oxy-gen from the blood, releasescarbon dioxide (CO2), pro-duces ATP and provides acti-vated hydrogen atoms. Thisprocess involves a repeatingcycle of reactions through aseries of nine organic com-pounds. The ninth com-pound is converted to thestarting compound in the se-ries by addition of carbon andhydrogen derived from glu-cose and the cycle repeats.

The activated hydrogen

atoms released in the cyclingprocess described above re-lease high energy electrons(e-). These electrons enter anelectron transport systemand are passed from molecule

to molecule in a chain of mol-ecules called cytochromes. This releases a special type ofenergy into the cell whichenzymes can apply to the for-mation of much more ATP.Like a storage battery, thisATP becomes stored energyin the cell. A specific enzymemust be present to facilitateeach reaction that occurs inthis process. Enzymes areproteins produced in all liv-ing cells from biochemical in-formation provided by DNA.

The cycling molecules, proteins and cytochromesalluded to in the illustrationabove are all found in livingcells. However, only a few arepresent in the general envi-ronment. Most are productsof life processes within thecells. This means that thechance of all necessary pro-cesses of life starting up si-multaneously by accident tobegin even the simplestforms of life are virtually

Where there is an intelligent designthere must also be a designer and apurpose for the design.

The DNA found in thenucleus of every cell of plants, animals and microbes con-tains all of the informationneeded to produce every oneof the thousands of proteinsand other molecules neededfor life functions, includingthe enzymes mentionedabove. The DNA also has allnecessary information for thedevelopment of each humanbeing with all of their individ-ual and personal characteris-tics from a fertilized egg toadulthood and beyond. Ineach process irreducibly com-plex patterns of cycling andsequential biochemical pro-cesses are in play. The originof this chemically stored in-formation cannot be ex-plained through natural se-lection. There must be an in-finite intelligent source forthe information. As scien-tists learn more about theseprocesses the whole picturecontinues to increase in itscomplexity and its amazinginterdependence and coordi-nation. No logical thinkingperson could imagine a situa-tion in which all of thesethings could start up acciden-tally. They are an outstand-ing evidence for the intelli-gent design embodied in

those first five words of Gene-sis, “In the beginning, Godcreated.”

Where there is an intelli-gent design there must alsobe a designer and a purposefor the design. So why aren’tthousands of scientists andteachers coming forward say-ing all that we have learnedand teach calls for the accep-tance of a creator God? Well, many are beginning to dothis. That is why there is aneffort to permit the teachingof intelligent design alongwith evolution in the schoolsof some states. However, there is an unwritten rule inplace that allows only a natu-ralistic view based on Dar-win’s theory of natural selec-tion to be taught in public ed-ucation. It is called method-ological naturalism. The factthat newer discoveries makethe theory of intelligent de-sign a more reasonable expla-nation for the beginning oflife on earth and the origin ofspecies is kept out of the dis-cussion.

Teaching and researchdepend on grants from gov-ernment agencies and sala-ries paid by school and uni-versity boards. They con-tinue to insist that the natu-ralistic rule stay in place.Adding to the problem, theworld of science is still domi-nated by scientists, textbookwriters and publishers whosearrogant personal agenda

constantly supercedes truth. They don’t want anythingtaught that might bring reli-gion or the Bible into the dis-cussion. They also continueto promote an erroneous anddistorted idea of what thefounding fathers of our na-tion intended by separationof church and state by mak-ing it apply to all aspects ofreligion. Behind it all is thereluctance of carnal man toaccept that there was “in thebeginning” an infinite beingthat man can not see, explain, describe or control.

What can believing par-ents of students do? Ask poli-ticians what they believe andvote accordingly. Discussthese things with other par-ents and make an organizedappeal for a fair presentationof all views of the origin of lifein the school curriculum.Teach our own understand-ing at home, at church and inconversations with friendsand relatives. Ask your pas-tor to invite a knowledgeableperson to make a presenta-tion on intelligent design as itrelates to science and scrip-ture.

Fruit of the Spirit

By Elder Duane Ely

Temperance is self-con-trol. It is having controlor restraint over one’s

own desires and natural im-pulses. It is moderation andself-restraint in action.

“And now I would thatye should be humble, andbe submissive, and gentle;easy to be entreated; fullof patience and long suf-

fering; being temperate inall things; being diligentin keeping the command-ments of God at all time;”Alma 5:39.

This scripture, like somany that we have read, gives us several elements ofthe fruit of the Spirit that weare required to have in ourlives. Here, we are admon-ished to be temperate in allthings. A temperate personhas self-control over everyaspect of their lives. Theyhave control over all of theiractions, what they say, whatthey do and how they treatothers. They live their livesin moderation and do not al-low their own desires to leadthem away to a life of excess.

“And now my son, I

have told you this, that yemay learn wisdom, thatye may learn of me thatthere is no other way normeans whereby man canbe saved, only in andthrough Christ. Behold,he is the life and the lightof the world. Behold, heis the word of truth andrighteousness. And now,as ye have begun to teach

the word, even so I wouldthat ye should continue toteach; and I would that yewould be diligent and tem-perate in all things” Alma18:11-13.

This scripture once againtells us to be temperate in allthings, but it also tells ussomething else that is impor-tant for us to learn. It isGod’s will that we learn wis-dom in our youth. If we havethis wisdom when we areyoung, it can prevent us fromhaving serious spiritual prob-lems later on in life.

These last few monthswe have been studying thefruit of the Spirit. This nextscripture tells the story of apeople who allowed the fruitof the spirit to fully work intheir lives. They are a goodexample of the blessings thatwe can receive when we com-pletely turn our lives over toGod.

“And it came to passthat there was no conten-tion in the land, because ofthe love of God which diddwell in the hearts of thepeople. And there were no

envyings, nor strifes, nortumults, nor whoredoms, nor lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of lascivi-ousness; and surely therecould not be a happier peo-

ple among all the peoplewhich had been created bythe hand of God: therewere no robbers, nor mur-ders, neither were thereLamanites, nor any man-ner of ites; but they were inone, the children of Christ, and heirs to the kingdomof God; and how blessedwere they, for the Lord didbless them in all their do-ings; yea, even they wereblessed and prospered, un-til an hundred and tenyears had passed away;and the first generationfrom Christ had passedaway, and there was notcontention in all the land”IV Nephi 1:17-21.

These people had re-moved the works of the fleshfrom their lives and theywere clearly allowing theHoly Spirit to direct and in-fluence every aspect of theirlives. They were filled with

the fruit of the Spirit and theresult was true happiness. They had a complete love forGod and their desire was toserve Him and follow all ofHis commandments.

Christ walked this earthand He was perfect, withoutsin. He is our pure, unblem-ished example, but these peo-ple also show what we canachieve in this temporal bodyif we completely turn ourlives over to Christ. As westrive to increase the fruit ofthe Spirit in our lives let usremember this scripture andthe great blessings that wecan receive.

Temperance is self-control. It is havingcontrol or restraint over one’s own de-sires and natural impulses. It is modera-tion and self-restraint in action.

Collins, Missouri

Greetings from the Faithful

Few here at Collins. The

hot miserable summer has

pretty well gone on its way,

leaving room for the slightly

cooler days of fall. The leaves

are blowing down from trees

as the colors change to those

beautiful shades of red and

gold. There’s a different feel-

ing in the air and a marked

quietness since the chatty lit-

tle birds have headed south

for the winter. I miss the

early morning “dawn cho-

rus,” but I enjoy the crisper

morning walks, too. All in

God’s plan!I have some good news to

report! On Sunday, Septem-ber 23rd, two very specialpeople stepped into the wa-ters of baptism and made

their covenant with JesusChrist. Elder Allen Kauffmanhad the privilege of baptizinghis grand-daughter, ShealaHerd, and then hisson-in-law, Dale Herd. OurFather in Heaven has an-swered many prayers con-cerning this event. Ourhearts are full to overflowingwith gratitude. Also, AaronHerd was home on leave af-ter having graduated fromthe United States MarineCorp (boot camp), and washere to witness his dad andsister joining the family ofChrist. Sheala was confirmedwith the laying on of handsfor the reception of the HolyGhost by Bro. Al lenKauffman, assisted by Apos-tle Roland Sarratt, and thenDale was confirmed by Bro.Sarratt, assisted by Bro.Kauffman.

Speaking of Aaron—hismom, dad, sister, Allen and Igot to go to San Diego, Cali-fornia, and be present, alongwith several friends from thePhoenix Local (Browns andYates), to watch Aaron’s Ma-rine Corp graduation cere-mony. It was very moving—all those young men answer-ing their General with onevoice as they snapped to at-tention. Please—remember

these young Marines (andother military people) inyour daily prayers. Theirlives may well depend onthem. Thank you for theprayers that have alreadybeen offered. Also, a specialthank you to the Andy Brownfamily for taking us in whilewe enjoyed our visit in Phoe-nix—as well as a big thanks toJoel and Jenny Yates for theuse of their Suburban. Wegot to go to church with ourbrothers and sisters in thegospel while we were there, too. It was like a “mini re-union”!

Jack and Betty Martin qui-etly celebrated their 63rd an-niversary in May. It isbecoming increasinglyharder for Betty to get outand go places. She attendschurch as often as herstrength will allow. Shemade a very special effort tocome when Dale and Shealawere baptized. There wereseveral from Independencewho came to share that time

with us as well.We have done a little repair

work on the church buildinghere. The guys re-roofed theback part of the building andthen several of us painted theold wainscoting, doors, etc.,on the inside. It lookscleaner and will still hold sev-eral people whenever any ex-tras want to come and join usfor services. Aaron hadn’t leftfor the Marines yet so we gota lot of use out of him when itcame to taking off the oldshingles on the roof andhelping with the re-roofing.Even Sheala got up there andhelped. Paul and SharonLiekness were there to helpwith everything—well ,Sharon and I didn’t get up onthe roof! We’re more of theground clutter fixers.

There was a going awayparty for Aaron in June. Lotsof people came, but guesswho the most of themwere…the people from thechurch. Only a couple of hisschool friends came by. Therest were his brothers andsisters in the gospel of Christ. Some thought he would bearound longer and theycould say their goodbyeslater, but his recruiter calledhim the NEXT day and askedhim if he still wanted to be aMarine and that he would beleaving the following day. Somany of his own friends

thought there was moretime—and there wasn’t. Iguess it puts me in mind ofthe 10 virgins in the scrip-tures—are we prepared ordo we think we have moretime!!

The men’s chorus from In-dependence came here andpresented the Holy Bible insong. We had a large crowdto enjoy it. They were excel-lent!

This past weekend theyoung people had a get-to-gether over at Sr. MarleneCobb’s cabin, and then cameto attend services here at Col-lins. During our service wewere privileged to have theblessing of a beautiful babygirl. Her name is ChristianaJoy. Her parents are A. J. andCharity Berwick. Christianais Stephen and Judy Gould’sgranddaughter. She was pre-sented to the Lord for a bless-ing to guide and protect herby Bro. Randy Sheldon, as-s isted by Bro. AllenKauffman. We were all gladto be witness to such a beau-tiful ordinance.

I have a few sermon quotesto send along for your con-sideration. Hope you findsome helpful thoughts.

Never forget the necessity tobe humble before God.

Satan knows the time we’rein and that his time is short, and he will do anything he

can to destroy us.

Just to “believe” falls a littlebit short.

Nothing keeps you on yourtoes like a dedicatedenemy!

Pressures of life bear uponus, but the Lord has apurpose.

Consider the consequencesof when we commitsin—people, job—makingyou ineffective in talking toothers about the gospel ofChrist.

What things do you do inyour life that are marginal?(Avoid the appearance ofevil.)

We are the product of thechoices we make.

Sin will take you fartherthan you want to go—keepyou longer than you wantto stay—and you’ll paymore than you everdreamed you’d have to pay!

Thank you for your time.May our God in Heaven blessand guide our lives in theselast days.

Excuses

In summertime, it’s too hot tomow,

In wintertime there’s too muchsnow.

It’s church time and weoverslept:

How can our religion be kept?

Forgot to pray—no time to doit;

Mentioned church toneighbor—did not pursue it.

Did not pay tithe—bought anew car;

Preacher says, “The end’s notfar.”

Could not hear prayer—thoughspoken with care;

Suddenly realized—not one didI bear.

Didn’t listen to sermons—hadthings on my mind;

Solutions to things I just had tofind.

Asleep in the sermon, I awokewith a start,

And found that God was still inmy heart.

And hope that someday, I’ll notsay with woe,

“Where, oh where, did Christ’sChurch go?”
