INTRODUCTION• In this presentation, this will explain about 4 different types of

Photography:• Photojournalism• Landscape• Portrait• Fashion

• Explained and defined with demonstrated examples.

WHAT IS PHOTOJOURNALISM? • The photo that are considered for Photojournalism aims to take powerful

pictures of a story in their raw form (not editing)

• Particularly in hard line news stories for wars and other serious stories

PHOTOJOURNALISM PAST• Nick Ut (1951- present) is a

journalist photographer working the for the Associated Press , who worked out of Los Angeles.

• This one of his works for example is the “Terror of War” or “Napalm Girl” in 1973 when he documented the Vietnam War in which the photo has won many awards over the years.

PHOTOJOURNALISM PRESENT• Don McCullin (1935 – Present) is a

modern photojournalism taking photos like this example here of a woman in Pakistan in a damaged home

• Photojournalism photography has changed with the availability with colour but capturing the action or story remains the same.

WHERE CAN PHOTOJOURNALISM BE SEEN?

• We mainly see this kind of photography in the news media.

• This media includes websites, books and newspapers

WHAT IS LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY?

• Landscape photography is a space that is photographed in the wide view and often have little to no people in this type of photography (if there are people in it, they are there to show the scale of the landscape).

• Most Landscape photography we have is of nature including beaches, green grass flatlands, mountains, active volcanos and other natural features.

LANDSCAPE IN THE PAST• Ansell Adams (1902 – 1984) was a landscape photographer taken photos of

nature national parks and other natural sites

This one (right) is of McDonald Lake at a national park in America.

LANDSCAPE IN THE PRESENT is a modern day Landscape photographer and has taken landscape photograph such as this superb example on right.

The layout of the landscape have changed little in the old day of landscape photography. The only things to changed is the quality and the fact that it is in colour.

WHERE IS THIS PHOTOGRAPHY USED?

• We mainly see this kind of photography in travel, some scientific and geographic media.

• This media includes websites, books, newspapers, brochures and magazines.

WHAT IS PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY?

• The photo that are considered for Portrait photography aims to take powerful pictures of a person or group of people showing a feeling, an expression or mood on their face

• Particularly for family pictures and art forms.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY PAST• Dorothea Lange (1895 – 1965) was a Portrait

Photographer who took this example in 1936 of a Migrant Mother when she photographed farm labourers.

• The image clearly shows a person or more than one person in this example. And it shows the woman’s expression.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY PRESENT

• Mario Testino (1954-present) is most known for his fashion work. Especially with his iconic work with Princess Diana and Kate Moss as this example shows.

• Apart from the availability of the colour in photos, the conventions of portrait photography have changed little since the beginning of this type of photograph.

• We mainly see this kind of photography in the news media.

WHAT IS FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY?

• The photos that are considered for Fashion aims to take powerful pictures of the clothes on a modal to make the cloths look good as well as mood and styling

• Particularly in making the clothes more presentable

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY PAST• David Bailey (1938-present) is a

fashion photographer who did do work for fashion including for the vogue magazine taking pictures like this example here.

• It has the characteristics of fashion photography as it shows the clothes with person wearing them to present them well. The lighting is also key and used to add drama to the picture.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY PRESENT

• Sebastian Kim is a modern day fashion photographer making examples like this for a fashion magazine

• Unlike the other types, Fashion photography has changed much in terms of color, design, lighting and style.

WHERE CAN FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY BE SEEN?

• We mainly see this kind of photography in the fashion media.

• This media includes websites, books, posters, brochures and newspapers.
