Line tape, as seen in pho-to 7. When laying out flames, you can remove and re-do the tape as many times as you want until you are happy with the flame shape. Photo 8 shows the finished tape application I settled on.

Next, I outlined the Fine Line tape with ¼" wide 3M masking tape, as shown in photo 9. Then the open areas were filled in with 3M 2" masking tape cut to shape, and the fins were covered with paper taped in place. The final masking job can be seen in photo 10. All of the tape edges must be

pressed down firmly to make sure there are no plac-es for the paint to leak. Finally, the flame areas were wiped with a tack cloth to remove any dust.

The products used for the flame colors are shown in photo 11: House of Kolor SG100 Intercoat Clear, RU-310 Fast Reducer, PBC-32 Tangelo Pearl, and PBC-65 Passion Pearl. First, the flame area was sprayed with a coat of SG100 Clear to seal the tape edges. Then I sprayed on three coats of PBC-32 Tangelo Pearl. See photo 12. All coats must be sprayed 15 minutes apart. PBC-65 Passion Pearl was used to make great accents for the flame edges. An Iwata airbrush (see photo 13) is the right tool for this sort of job. When making ac-cents like this, I recommend mixing the Passion Pearl a little on the thin side and practicing on a sheet of paper to get the feel for how it will apply, as shown in pho-

to 14. Next, I lightly shadowed all of the flame edges, as shown in photo 15. Photo 16 shows the finished accent edges. I let the flames dry for a few hours, and then I carefully removed to tape—the result is shown in photo 17. Two coats of SG100 were then applied over the whole rocket and left to dry overnight.

Next, it was time for the shadows. To make the shadows look right, they all

have to be on the same side of the flames. Start by running Fine Line tape on top of the lower sides of the flames, as shown in photo 18. Then apply ¼" masking tape to follow the Fine Line tape. A sharpie was used to mark the start and stop points for the shadows (see photo 19). Then I used 2" masking tape to make overspray shields, as shown in photo 20. All of the shadows cannot be sprayed at once—they must be

taped and sprayed a few at a time.To make the shadows, I made a small

batch of paint using one part BC25 black basecoat and 9 parts SG100 clear, add-ing more thinner than normal (materials shown in photo 21). The shadows were sprayed on with the Iwata airbrush, as shown in photo 22. The shadows hardly show up in the photo. It’s kind of strange how cameras show colors. After all of the shadows were finished, the tape was re-moved and four coats of SG100 were ap-plied over the entire rocket 15 minutes apart. Photo 23 shows the result. Now the camera can see the shadows. The paint was left to dry overnight, then the rocket was wet-sanded with 600 grit sandpaper. Care was taken not to sand into the edges of the flames.

Before the final clear could be applied, the rocket had to be cleaned. I used a pump spray bottle to wet the entire rocket with

Prep Sol, wiping it in with a paper towel. Then I used another paper towel and wipe the rocket dry. Finally, a thorough wiping with a tack cloth ensured that there was no dust.

The final clear coat was done with the products shown in photo 24: House of Kolor UFC35 Urethane Clear coat, KU150 Catalyst, and RU-310 Fast Reducer. Two coats were applied 15 minutes apart (see photo 25), and then the rocket was al-lowed to dry for a few days.

The rocket was finished so I took it outside in the sun. See the result in pho-to 26. It looks nice, but the camera now shows the shadows too dark. My eyes do not see them that way.

The next time I do shadowing, I will mix a little BC25 Black with the base color. That should give a better effect and not ap-pear too dark.

Photo 25. Final clear coats applied.

Photo 23. Unmasked and overcoat of SG100 Clear has been applied. Now the shadows are visible.

A Semi-Empirical Approach to Range Safety Operation

Our sport has undergone some amaz-ing changes in recent years. Technology, techniques, and our prominence in the aeromodeling community have all ad-vanced significantly. Consequently, we also have an increased burden of responsibility to run our ranges with care.

All firing activities, be they education-al outreach launches, demonstrations, or your club’s own flight activities, must be guided by one rule: if a flight is arguably unsafe because of design or construction, it must not fly. This is exactly why we ap-point specific safety operations officials on our flight ranges. And I believe a vital key is the relationship between the Range Safe-ty Officer and Safety Check-in personnel. Those titles are not randomly chosen. With that in mind, consider how they should jointly guide flight operations.

First, I recommend that anyone who will officiate at a launch read the 2005 Apt Report on rocket flight safety. (Available

online through the NAR website’s Docu-ments sub-tabs.) It has much insight into the many factors and solutions involved in preventing errant flights. And when did you last do a detailed reading of the cur-rent Safety Codes and FAA Part 101 rocket flight regulations?

Second, Check-in and Range Safety Of-ficers must all be on the same page as to how inspections and flight operations will proceed. If a given model causes concern, the RSO should be brought into the dis-cussion.

Third, all your Section members must support this aim in all their flight activities.

Next, here are a series of little rules of thumb I have used when judging the pos-sible flying qualities of models. They are based on field observations of what works and what doesn’t. They served me fairly well at contest and sport flights over the decades:

To begin with, each flight-ready model

must be physically handled by safety offi-cers. Otherwise you will have no real info on balance points, heft, and quality of con-struction. Officers should all have famil-iarity with rockets at least as high as that power class which is being checked in. Don’t be slow to ask someone with more experience for help. For high power rang-es, Level-certified personnel are best.

After getting the model’s feel, look down from the nose and check fin align-ment, body straightness, and launcher guide position. Do a hard push-pull on the motor and mount to rule out slippage. Make a gentle “twang” test on the fins at the same time. (You’re not attempting to snap them off, just giving each one a rea-sonable amount of side loading for the expected flight dynamics.) This will help weed out incorrect or misapplied glues.

Take a side view and ask yourself if the fin area and placement looks reasonable for where the lift-off CG is locating. I also like to draw a mental line from nose to fin tip. If the line’s angle is less than about 15 degrees to the model centerline I get ner-vous. Same thing if the rocket’s CG is less than 1/4 the length to the rear of the mod-el. Eighteen tiny fins buried down in tur-bulent body airflow will not have the same correcting effect as three large fins of the same total area. Remember that tube-sta-bilized rockets are subject to “flow choke” from cross winds.

Short, fat rockets will often have less correcting “moment” than longer models with the same fin area. Consequently, a short design will naturally have narrower stability margins, all other factors being equal. Competitive aerobatic aircraft are designed the same way precisely to make them less stable. They are often called “short-coupled” designs for that reason. Don’t be afraid to ask for a “Heads Up” call on any model; even kits will sometimes do

surprising things.Check proper fit of nose, transitions,

and recovery systems. And ask about their wadding. Many beginners don’t under-stand the difference between Kleenex™ and flame-proofed flight products.

Going back to fin and body alignment, this is one of the really important fac-tors of a safe range inspection. You must judge if any errors will cancel each other out or reinforce each other. A little wob-ble or coning spin is OK. However, two or more fins with even relatively small errors in the same direction might send a rock-et sideways. The same thing can happen with a body tube deformed by too-eager handling. You must have the backbone to tell that cute kid and their parents exact-ly why you can’t let their model fly. This needs to be explained politely and clearly, with possible corrective suggestions. And it can’t matter if it’s one rocket or a whole Cub Pack of kids you have to refuse. Hope-fully, your club also sets up a table for field repairs or has loaner models for this even-tuality.

Ask specifically what motors and de-lays are being flown, I’m at least as guilty as the next guy of occasionally flying the

wrong motor specs for a given rocket. A small series of dents across the great Amer-ican landscape can attest to this.

For large-model ranges, know before-hand if more complex models employ pyro charges, unusual upper stage or event initi-ations, or are otherwise physically or elec-tromagnetically sensitive. If the answer is yes, flight prep and check-in need to hap-pen well away from uninvolved persons. Certain launcher systems can torch off sen-sitive igniters even without an individual launch pad being selected.

Beware radios transmitting near those igniters as well. UHF-“T” through GHz Band radios may pose less risk of acci-dental triggering than longer wavelengths used in CB and VHF HAM radios, but no RF-emitting system should be trusted near them without tests. This includes all types of cell/smart phones.

Here’s where it gets squirrelly: Ask the owner if the model has flown before, then look for evidence that it actually has. Then ask them what it actually did in that flight. Ask how that big smear of mud got splat-tered across the nose. Ask questions about the flier’s experience level, especially if there is any question on their competency

present. In my experience, most new fli-ers will gladly ask for and accept help. A small number will lie to your face. On oc-casion, I have been assured that an obvi-ously wrong design has had multiple good flights. When I inspected inside the body for flight residue and saw and smelled nothing, they usually tried to grin their way through.

For about eight years I was charged with running a large rocket program for a space/computer-themed summer camp in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. One year I had a problem with one of the teen coun-selors. He kept sabotaging his own mod-els because he thought it was hilarious to see them “dart” into the ground. After the third one the situation became clear. He denied it until I inspected his next rocket. I threw him off the field.

Finally, anyone has the right to ques-tion an upcoming flight’s safety. This is not a call for anarchy, but rather empower-ment. Here’s why. In the early 1970s I saw a “Condor” B/G contestant stage a naked Flight Systems F7-0 booster to a C-pow-ered Estes Orbital Transport at a major east coast regional contest. No one audi-bly questioned that this flier had not actu-

ally installed a lower stage fin unit to the heavy long-burn F motor (as he swore he would do at the pad.). An awesome and exhilarating demonstration of dynamic in-stability in action ensued. In other words, well over a hundred fliers assumed some-one else had OK’d what this fool was doing and kept quiet.

This is why we need to be strong on thorough flight inspection procedures. Most people are nice. A few are perverse jerks. This is nothing new. As the saying goes, “The only folks I trust are me and thee, and sometimes I’m not too sure about you.” Each NAR member must always be the active check on unsafe operations wherever they may occur. Remember, it will be your club, your field, your Associa-tion, and your sport which will suffer the consequences if you proceed otherwise.

NAR Senior member Alan Williams has served in many range crew positions at local to international level contests over almost fifty years. For more than twenty years he was the primary safety check-in officer at the bimonthly NASA God-dard Flight Center Visitor Center public launches. He is a frequent contributor to Sport Rocketry.

Designation Mfg. Size Total Propel. Cert. Notes Impulse Mass Group

(mm) (N-sec.) (grams)

As a service to NAR members, the NAR Stan-dards and Testing Committee (S&T) publishes a comprehensive list of rocket motors certified for use at NAR launches in the July/August and January/February issues of Sport Rocketry. As the NAR, the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA), and the Cana-dian Association of Rocketry (CAR) maintain a re-ciprocal certification policy, motors certified by all organizations are included in this list. Members of all organizations may use motors certified directly by any organization if the motor has been certified for transportation in your country (DOT certification in the USA).

Additions, deletions, and other changes to the list of NAR-certified motors will be published in NAR journals as they become available. They will also be published electronically on the NAR website (http://www.nar.org).

Individuals, such as Contest Directors, requir-ing the very latest list of NAR certified motors may contact Edward Pattison-Gordon via electronic mail at <[email protected]>. Other questions may also be directed to the S&T Co-chair, Jack Kane, at 23 Bungay Road, Mansfield, MA 02048. Ques-tions regarding Tripoli certified motors should be directed to Paul Holmes, Chairperson, Tripoli Mo-tor Test Committee. Questions regarding CAR certi-fied motors should be directed to André Choquette, Chairperson, CAR Motor Testing.

Order the S&T Motor Data Sheets from NARTS if you desire additional information. This report con-sists of data sheets for each motor currently certi-fied by NAR S&T. Each data sheet contains a thrust curve together with values from a test firing, includ-ing measured average thrust and total impulse, plus 32 data points for use in RASP altitude simulation computer programs.

LOC/PrecisionOn November 21 it was announced

that LOC/Precision, long considered an icon of the hobby, had been sold by Barry Lynch, who is retiring, to Dave Barber and Jason Turicik. LOC/Precision was created by Ron Schultz 31 years ago. The compa-ny quickly rose to become one of the pioneers of high power rocketry. Barry Lynch pur-chased the com-pany from Schultz in 2000, and for the next 16 years contin-ued to build upon Schultz’s legacy, provid-ing quality high power rocket kits, parts, and supplies to model rocketry enthusiasts around the country.

“This started as a hobby for Dave and I over a decade ago,” Turicik said. “We had a start-up company we sold to Barry. A few months ago, he approached Dave about buying LOC/Precision. It was an opportu-nity we couldn’t pass up. Our families are fired up to help us grow LOC 3.0 to new altitudes.”

Barber and Turicik will be relocating LOC/Precision to its new home in Plym-outh, Wisconsin.

For more information about LOC/Pre-cision and their product line, log onto their website at www.locprecision.com.

Dynasoar Rocketry

Frank Burke at Dynasoar Rocketry has been busy, ginning up three new RC rocket glider kits.

The Interceptor III is styled after the classic Interceptor, but has a larger wing and a lighter weight to allow for gliding. The Hypersonic II is styled after a pro-posed Mach 7+ X-15-3 delta wing con-figuration. The Pegasus is a futuristic de-sign with a high cranked delta wing design and tri-tail design for added lateral stabil-ity. All three kits are very simple to build, taking just one to two hours to complete. Each kit is provided with all of the hard-ware needed to complete the build, includ-

ing rail buttons or launch lug, white body tubes, plastic nose cone, and lightweight wings. Each glider will require two servos, receiver, small single cell LiPo battery, and a radio with elevon mixing.

All gliders are designed for use with AeroTech 24mm E6 rocket motors. Dyan-soar also carries the 24mm RC casings and E6 reloads for this purpose. Designed to boost straight up from a standard launch pad, these gliders have a light wing loading for a gentle glide. Nothing is ejected from the model, and they land ready to fly again immediately.
