These phonics games are designed to be used in conjunction with your phonics /spelling
program. The pack focuses on students reading, writing and spelling CVC words.
The pack is split into 7 sets of words, where each set introduces new sounds/letters. Each set
builds on the previous and will include the sounds/letters from previous sets. The sets include:
Set 1: a, i, m, s, t
Set 2: n, o, p
Set 3: b, c, g, h
Set 4: d, e, f, v
Set 5: k, l, r, u
Set 6: j, w, z
Set 7: x, y
Preparation:
1. Print the word cards in each set on heavy card stock. Cut out each card and bundle
together with the heading card. If you would like to play the matching cards game you will
need to print each set of cards twice.
2. Print the balloons (pages 45-54) on heavy card stock and cut out each balloon. Lower
case and upper case letters have been included. Again, if you would like to play the
matching sounds/letters games you will need to print each set of cards twice.
3. Print and laminate the balloon game boards included in each set.

How to use the cards:
There are many ways that the cards and balloons can be used. Outlined below are a few of the
ways that I have used the cards. When playing the games you can include the cards for just one set
or join a number of sets together.
1. Build the balloon
To play this game you will need a set of word cards, the matching sound balloons and the
matching balloon game board. As each set builds on previous sets, you will need to include all
sound balloons from the previous set as well. E.g. if
playing set 2, the balloons that will be needed include:
a, i m, s, t, n, o, p.
Depending on the word cards you select to use you
may also need 2 of some of the balloons, e.g. for the
word: pop.
Turn the word cards face down in a pile.
Each student takes a turn to turn over a word card.
That student then reads the word card. The
student then needs to build the word with the balloons
on the game board and read the word again.
If the student reads and builds the word correctly he/
she gets to keep the word card.
Students alternate turns, the student with the most
cards at the end is the winner.
