Kenny, Joy’s husband, was passing trays and encountered a patient that was feeling down and blue. The patient was upset that since she was in the hospital, she couldn’t bake a cake for her husband as she always did in previous years. Kenny contacted his wife Joy to tell her about this patient’s need. Joy went to the bakery and picked out a cake for the patient to give to her husband. Joy even took the time to have the bakery put the husband’s name and the words “from your wife” on the cake. Joy did such a compassionate thing and when the patient say the cake, she called it “precious”.

Meet Jaime PearsonJaime, the administrative intern for this summer, is just finishing her fifth week at Allen Hospital and is loving every minute of her time here. Born in LaCrosse, WI and moving to Fort Dodge when she was two, Jaime grew up in a very active family. Her par-ents own a property in Colo-rado and the family vacations there a couple times a year to ski. They also golf together, and Jaime is an accomplished swimmer. She even has a few records at UNI, where she

participated in the swim team until a back injury sidelined her. Jai-me is currently training for a sprint triathlon, and in her spare time, she enjoys volunteering (she logged nearly 200 hours at Trinity Fort Dodge, and prior to her internship at Allen, volunteered here as well).

She names her economics professor Lisa Jepsen as one of the most influential people in her life. “Lisa has mentored me, helped get me through my injury and has introduced me to so many contacts to help get me to this point in my educational career. Without her, I really don’t know if I’d be this far along in reaching my goals,” Jaime explained. Jaime participates in research proj-ects with her professor and credits her with helping Jaime find the internship.

Jaime wants to go into healthcare administration to help others – she’d ideally like to start in physician recruiting and eventually moving into a COO position at a hospital someday. At Allen, Jai-me was given a number of projects, such as working on a referral database, a GAP analysis of mental health issues, as well as a number of others. “I first felt a bit overwhelmed, but after finish-ing feel a great sense of accomplishment. I feel like I’m making a difference, that my work will help improve Allen for our commu-nity and patients.” After graduating next May with her bachelor’s degree, she will start working on her master’s in hospital adminis-tration.

Allen has been fortunate to benefit from her hard work and ex-pertise and we wish you luck in all your future endeavors, Jaime.

New Devotion and Worship Service on SundaysThe Inpatient Rehab Unit has initiated a Sunday Devotion and Worship service with the Allen Chaplaincy at 4:30 pm on Sunday afternoons in the Community Room, 5th floor off elevator D.

“I’m a lucky, happy girl,” says Allen volunteer Kitty Ott. After spending 25 years as a secretary and aide in the Waterloo School System, Kitty decided volunteering would help her stay active. She loves working with people and didn’t want to sit at home every day. She lives at home with her husband of 68 years, with whom she raised one daughter and two sons, “Three marvelous kids, smart, respectable members of society!”

Kitty began her volunteer career in 2005, and has since contributed over 1,300 hours of volunteer service to Allen. When she’s not volunteering at Allen or at the Waterloo Recreation Center, she enjoys reading, knitting, playing cribbage and although not her favorite activity, keeping her house neat and clean. In the # years she’s volunteered at Allen, Kitty has served as a bright spot welcoming patients’ family and friends in the surgical waiting room. “Kitty’s great sense of humor and her natural ability to show kindness to others is such a great help for the families in the surgery waiting room. Each day that she is here is made better by her presence!” said Sally Sherwood, manager of volunteer services.

Kitty said one of the biggest lessons she’s learned in life is to have a sense of humor, “That will carry you through most everything in life. And ‘do unto others’ – that’s a very important thing to remember.” Thank you for your smiling face, Kitty and your dedicated service to Allen!

America’s Night Out Against Crime - NOTE NEW TIMEAllen Hospital, as part of the MAPLES Neighborhood Association, would like to invite you

National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime”. Please join us on August 6 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Waterloo and enjoy walking tacos, dessert and refreshments at no charge. Food will be served from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm and all are welcome. National Night Out has been recognized throughout the United States since it began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

If you are unable to make it for dinner but would like to get involved, the committee is in need of volunteers to bake cookies. If you are interested, please contact Erin Iverson at

3960 or [email protected].

Just Having FunThe butterfly garden near Entrance 1 had a few extra visitors on Wednesday. The Tygart family took a break from visiting a pa-tient to play around the flowers. Allen associates helped fund and plant the garden, and it made for a fun impromptu playground. Thank you to mom Candace for allowing us to take the photos - and to the young models who were a lot of fun to photograph!

Have you thanked a volunteer today?

Some Blue Zone Tips

Invest in others: One of the best bits of relationship advice I ever received came from Ed Diener, a revered happiness expert. He used to winter in Illinois, and many mornings, ice covered both he and his wife’s car windows. I remember he told me, “When I wake up in the morning, I want to scrape off her windows before my own.” His message: find the partner, or develop the mindset, wherein you get more joy out of doing something nice for them, than for yourself.

Eat your fruit: Odds are, you need more fiber, foliate, potassium and Vitamins A and C in your diet. To get these nutrients, stock up on grapes, apricots, berries, peaches, cranberries, pineapple, watermelon, bananas, raisins, pears, oranges, and clementines. If eaten daily, the many antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and en-zymes in these healthy treats prevent disease and promote longevity.

Sleep: If you slept fewer than 6 hours last night, you were 30% less happy than you could be today. Note to self: The longest-lived, happiest people sleep between 7-8.5 hours per night. How much do you normally sleep? Is it enough?
