indicated that they will be attending.
Thank you to Kellie Gemmell (Max – Yr 6 and Charlie – Yr 2) and her team of

Catholic Education Week – July 29 – August 4
Next week is Catholic Education Week, a time when we take stock and reflect upon the journey of Catholic Education in Queensland from its beginnings when the first Catholic School was established in 1845 by the first priest appointed in Brisbane, Father James Hanly. Fr Hanly employed Mary and Michael Bourke as the teachers of this first school. This school opened with 56 students and was located in a slab-walled, bark roofed building near there the Myer Centre now
stands on the corner of Elizabeth and Albert Streets in central Brisbane.
Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate
and promote their distinctive mission and ethos.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate,
contributing, life-giving members of society.
The theme for Catholic Education Week this year is ‘Discovering New Horizons’. This theme has been aligned with the official Year of the Youth theme for 2018 and is derived from a speech given by Pope Francis at World Youth Day 2016 where he called young people and the Church to ‘open new horizons for
spreading joy’.
We will gather as a whole school to celebrate this special week with a liturgy and an Open Morning commencing at 9am, on Friday August 3, in the courtyard. I look forward to seeing as many community members in attendance
as possible.

REMINDER: BCE Mock Critical Incident on Wednesday August 1
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter – see below the information
for your reference:
To ensure our community of schools are as safe as possible, Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) schools and
offices will conduct a ‘’mock” critical incident exercise on Wednesday 1 August.
What will occur?
This “mock” exercise is being coordinated by our crisis management consultants in liaison with Queensland Police and other emergency services. The details are kept under-wraps, known only to a small number of
organisers.
Who will be involved?
Principals of the schools directly involved in the exercise have been advised. The exercise will also involve
many people from various areas of BCE.
Your school is not directly involved.
What you may hear.
While we will do our best to inform the community before, during and after that this is a “mock” exercise, it
may be viewed by some as an actual event.
Please do not be alarmed if you hear reports of an incident on that day involving Catholic schools.
St Brendan’s Community Bash
DON’T FORGET – The next Fete Planning meeting – tonight, 7pm at The Salisbury
Hotel – Toohey Rd, Salisbury
Our annual school fete, known as St Brendan’s Community Bash, is fast approaching and there are lots of things for us all to consider and remember. Over the coming weeks we will ask each child to bring in some donations to help make our day SUPER
special.
The first week of donations need to be:
Chocolate—family sized bars
The time has come to begin the collection of chocolate for our Lob-A-Choc stall. As in previous years, we will
run a competition to find the class who donates the most chocolate.
Details of this competition and the prize for winning will be announced on assembly next Monday and
published in the newsletter next week. Stay tuned!
Applications for the ride armbands will come home this week. The details are as follows:
Pre-paid Armbands (ie. Paid for before fete day) will be $30.00 – all rides as many times as you like all day!
Armband purchased on Fete Day will be $35.00—all rides as many times as you like all day! No Armband—all rides are $5.00 each on Fete Day
Please find attached with this newsletter the most recent list of our wonderful sponsors. Our Community
Bash cannot happen without the support of these companies and their generous donations.

Friday August 3rd . Catholic Education Week – Liturgy at 9:20am. Invite your family! Stay for a cup of tea. Friday the 3rd we will gather for a community liturgy and morning to conclude celebrations for Catholic Education Week 2018. The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week for celebrations is ‘‘Discovering New Horizons”. The theme for Catholic Education Week this year has been aligned with the official Year of Youth theme for
2018 and is derived from a speech given by Pope Francis at World Youth Day 2016 where he called and said:
“My friends, Jesus is the Lord of risk, he is the Lord of the eternal “more”. Jesus is not the Lord of comfort, security and
ease. Following Jesus demands a good dose of courage, a readiness to trade in the sofa for a pair of walking shoes and to set out on new and uncharted paths. To blaze trails that open up new horizons capable of spreading joy, born of
God’s love and wells up in your hearts with every act of mercy.”
Whole School Mass at St Pius X - Wednesday 8th of August. We will be gathering at St Pius X Church to celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop), Australia’s first saint, on Wednesday the 8th of August. Please join us for this mass at 9:30am if you are able. While there, the children will have a sausage sizzle lunch and meet with the children of St Pius X for some fun. Have a great week all. Brendan
