5th Sunday In Ordinary Time ~ Job speaks of a life filled with misery, drudgery, troubled nights and restlessness without hope. Paul speaks of spending his life in the service of the gospel – to preach it free of charge to all persons: “I have made myself a slave to all so as to win as many as possible. To the weak I

became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some.” Jesus was pressed by the crowds at night, at dawn. They sought him out. He “went off to a deserted place, where he prayed”. But they pursued him – whole towns who were seeking healing and to be freed from demons. Jesus spent himself for others. In each of these readings today, there is an emptying of self yet for very different reasons and with very different results. Job found emptiness that became meaninglessness. Paul found ultimate meaning in preaching the gospel – to this end he dedicated the rest of his life. Jesus was pursued. No matter where he went, he was found. Not only did he know there was meaning in what he said and did, the people knew it too and sought what he had to offer to restore their lives. In John’s gospel Jesus would finally say: “I am the way, the truth and the life.” It couldn’t be put more simply. Jesus as healer and restorer of life is the Jesus that many still seek today. The greatest healing throughout the gospels goes to and comes from the center of the spirit in each of us. It is there that we open up to God to find strength, meaning, hope, life, truth – the way! The responsorial psalm invites our praise of the Lord “who heals the broken

hearted”. Let us life up our hearts! Let us lift them high and sing out our praise to the Lord who: is good, is gracious, who rebuilds and gathers, who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, who calls each by name, who sustains and in whom there is wisdom without limit!

Next weekend, February 11th, we will have our 1st “I love St. Bernie” 2nd collection. This is the $10 collection. Remember, throughout the year we will have four collections: $10 - $20 - $50 - $100. The total is $180, but spread out over the year; one collection in

each quarter: February, May, August, November. Last year it was exceptionally successful, and your participation was great! This collection was a great help to our general funds and so I urge your cooperation again to make it even better!

My name is Haylie Zuno. I became a student at St. Bernard Catholic School last year. Before that, I went to a public school called Mt. Washington. It was a great school but I like that I am able to learn about my faith here at St. Bernard. The only things I had learned about my faith were from Catechism. I was eager to learn more and now I am very educated about it. I ended my 6th & 7th grade with a 4.0 GPA. I have two brothers. I have no pets. My favorite hobbies are: softball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, dancing, running and baking. My goal is to get into a good High School and study hard so I could be accepted into USC with a scholarship and get in the medical industry to be an Orthodontist.

Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario — Job habla de una vida llena de miseria, de penas, noches problemáticas e inquietud sin esperanza. Pablo habla de pasar su vida al servicio del Evangelio, de predicarlo gratuitamente a todas las personas: "Me he convertido en esclavo de todos, para ganarlos a

todos. Con los débiles me hice débil, para ganar a los débiles. Me he hecho todo a todos, a fin de

ganarlos a todos”. Jesús era presionado por la multitud al atardecer, y de madrugada. Lo buscaban. Él "salió y se fue a

un lugar solitario, donde se puso a orar”. Pero lo seguían, ciudades enteras que buscaban la sanación y el ser liberados de los demonios. Jesús se dedicó a los demás. En cada una de estas lecturas de hoy, hay un desalojo, un vaciamiento de sí mismo por razones muy diferentes y con resultados muy diferentes. Job encontró el vacío que se volvió insignificante. Pablo encontró el significado fundamental en la predicación del Evangelio; para este fin, dedicó el resto de su vida. Jesús fue perseguido. No importba a dónde fuera, siempre lo encontraban. No solo sabía que había sentido en lo que decía y hacía, la gente también lo sabía y buscaba lo que tenía que ofrecer para restaurar sus vidas. En el evangelio de Juan, Jesús finalmente diría: "Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida". No podría ser más simple. Jesús como sanador y restaurador de la vida es el Jesús que muchos todavía buscan hoy. La mayor sanación a través de los Evangelios va y viene dede el centro del espíritu en cada uno de nosotros. Es allí donde nos abrimos a Dios para encontrar fortaleza, significado, esperanza, vida, verdad, ¡el camino! El salmo responsorial invita a alabar al Señor "que sana los corazones

quebrantados". Vivamos nuestros corazones! Levantémoslos y cantemos nuestra alabanza al Señor que: es bueno, y misericordioso, que reconstruye y reúne, que sana los corazones destrozados y venda sus heridas, que llama a cada uno de nosotros por su nombre, que sostiene y en quien hay sabiduría ¡sin límite!

+ FINANZAS PARROQUIALES El próximo fin de semana, 11 de Febrero, tendremos nuestra primer colecta "I love St. Bernie". Esta es la colecta de $10. Recuerde, durante todo el año tendremos cuatro colectas: $10, $20, $50, y $100. El total es de

Q de una estudiante del 8° grado de la escuela de San Bernardo. Me llamo Haylie Zuno. Llegué a la Escuela de San Bernardo el año

pasado de la Escuela Pública Mt. Washington. Es una gran escuela

pero me gusta poder aprender sobre mi fe aquí en San Bernardo. Lo

único que había aprendido acerca de mi fe había sido a través del

Catecismo. Estaba ansiosa por aprender más y ahora he aprendido

mucho al respecto. Tengo dos hermanos. No tengo mascotas. Terminé

mi 6° y 7° grado con un GPA de 4.0. Mis pasatiempos favoritos son:

softball, voleibol, fútbol, natación, bailar, correr y hornear. Mi objetivo

es ser aceptada en una buena escuela secundaria y estudiar mucho

para poder ser aceptada en USC con una beca y entrar en la industria

médica para llegar a ser Ortodoncista.
