Glenda Millard, The Tender Moments of Saffron SilkDave Lowe, Squirrel Boy vs the Bogeyman
Phoenix Yard Books is an independent children’s publisher situated in between wobbled cobbled walls and wooden beams of a converted yard and brewery near King’s Cross in London.
Winner – Best Newcomer Publisher – IPG Awards 2013
No one in Norway will forget what happened last December. They don’t need to read The Disappearing Children, the story of Finn Popps and his dad - the taxi driver who formed the More Party and became Prime Minister. But why would UK readers want to read a Scandinavian cult satire of politicians and populism, around about May 2015? Well, I couldn’t possibly insinuate…
And so, our spring 2015 list is (nearly) all about the fiction and funny. This year also sees the launch of Squirrel Boy, comedy for younger readers (7-10s) about a highly unlikely superhero, written by Dave Lowe and illustrated in comic-style panels by Phoenix Yard favourite, Cate James.
Or, if you’d rather switch off from politics, and radioactive squirrels are not to your taste, why not try our new One and Only Colouring Book series? Perfect for all ages, stages and phases of creativity.

Finn is the youngest son of Norway’s new Prime Minister. Until recently, Finn’s dad was a taxi driver, and after years spent listening to the electorate complaining in the back seat of his cab, Teddy Popps is idealy placed to form his More Party, who, against all predictions, are voted into power.
But everything is not well in Finn’s new, grand surroundings: his new brother, a gift from a devious dictator in a faraway land, is acting strangely; and, one-by-one, the children in Finn’s new school start to disappear...
A brilliantly witty debut novel and a powerful satire on modern politics and populism.
Over 30,000 copies sold in Norway.
Bestselling madcap Scandinavian comedy is on the campaign trail for the General Election 2015.

The Very First Chapter
Everyone’s good at something. Finn Popps was good
at remembering things. However, he wasn’t particularly
good at keepie-uppies, dancing, singing, skating, juggling
or turning his eyelids inside out. Not that turning your
eyelids inside out is something you have to do all that
often, but you never know. You might find yourself in
a life or death situation where being able to turn your
eyelids inside out is what saves you.
But Finn Popps could remember things. It was like
everything he had ever read or seen on TV had been
written down on little Post-it notes and stuck to a giant
memory wall inside his head – a wall he could examine
whenever he needed to.
That was why he was so irritated with himself. Who
was the big, old man sitting on his right? He knew his
face. He had seen him on the news and in the newspapers
several times. What worried Finn was that the images in
his head were of stabbings, murder, assault and other
crimes. Surely they didn’t let murderers into the palace?
He shifted a tiny bit to the left.
Finn looked around. There were a lot of other
familiar faces as well. Not just his big brother, father and
grandmother. The Crown Princess sat across the table
from him, unaware of the big white blob on her nose – a
souvenir of the dessert she had wolfed down.
Finn had never been to the palace before. But, my
goodness, that’s where he was now – in the big, yellow
banqueting hall sitting beneath some huge chandeliers
with at least a hundred other stiffly-dressed dinner guests.
He had been given a new suit for the occasion even
though there were still two weeks to Christmas, and he
had stood for a long time in front of the mirror trying to
coax his hair into submission.

Squirrel Boy
Squirrel Boy vs the Bogeyman
Author IllustratorDave Lowe Cate James
Launching a totally nutty new series!
Walter Kettle is a completely ordinary boy, until the day he receives a visit from a certain radioactive squirrel. And then, every time Walter eats a nut, the most extraordinary transformation happens and Walter becomes… SQUIRREL BOY!
But Walter is not the only person affected by nuclear activity. On the other side of town, Jeremy Winkleman-Grubb is picking his nose. With the help of his ferocious elderly neighbour, Mrs Onions, Walter must save the town from the Bogeyman.
Illustrated in comic-style panels throughout, Squirrel Boy is a hilarious new series with huge appeal to both seasoned and reluctant readers.

Continuing Glenda Millard’s multi-award-winning Kingdom of Silk series, finally published in the UK. These are family-based stories: beautifully written, whimsical, eloquent little novels that feel very gentle but explore some really important themes. They are quite simply exceptional.
In books 5 and 6, the focus shifts to Scarlet and Saffron, the eldest and the youngest of the Rainbow Girls. In Plum Puddings and Paper Moons, Scarlet befriends Anik, a refugee from faraway, leading her to declare peace on Cameron’s Creek… and the world. Author TranslatorMarjolaine Leray Sarah Ardizzone
She started life as a little red scribble and then, there she was: a Little Red Hood, barely recognisable as the legend from the fairy tale. The wolf is still big and bad, but he also happens to be really, really dumb. Our Little Red Hood questions the wolf’s personal hygiene before tricking her predator into his demise: this is one cool little red scrawl with her head screwed on.
Falling somewhere between high art and graffiti, the very edgy style of illustration is complemented by minimal, snappy and hugely entertaining text from an award-winning translator.
“If there’s anyone out there who is worried about the future of children’s publishing, here’s a book to cheer them. It’s all frighteningly good: author, translator, publishing house - all young, fresh, independent, and talented.” Professor Peter Hunt,

Lollipop and Grandpa are intrepid explorers, always on the lookout for the next adventure. Underpinning the series is the relationship between an intelligent, inquisitive little girl and her mischievous grandparent.
“Grandpa loves the wild” and he takes Lollipop on safari in the garden with binoculars and a picnic. There, his imagination conjures fearsome dangers, including a hippo-potta- and a slippery Snake-Pipe. Lollipop seems unperturbed, until a roar from a clothes-lion has the two of them hurtling home. What are rights? Why do we have rights? What do rights mean to different children in different parts of the world?
Based on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, this exquisitely beautiful picture book takes some of the 54 articles of the Convention and translates them into a language children can understand.
I have the right to be a child is a multi-layered resource for discussion, debate and contemplation on the complexities inherent by the term ‘rights’ and the big questions about what it means to have rights in the world we live in today.
