    FILM STUDIES 32

Autumn at the Phoenix is comprised of several feature films that have been racking up kudos at glitzy international festivals and some that caught our attention without any fanfare. In addition, we offer popular Met Opera screenings, UK Jewish Film Festival and the Into Film Festival. Do try our two new programmes: the Phoenix Film Salon and the Use It Or Lose It Film Quiz. For the younger viewers, weve got Toddler Time and Kids Club activities. Dont forget our welcoming Phoenix Caf, too. We hope to see you often.

Our October films offer great variety. We start with Ida (p3), in which director Pawel Pawlikowskis memorable character faces questions and contradictions arising from family history. Sharing the screen that week is Cronenbergs unique take on Hollywood, Maps to the Stars (p4), starring Julianne Moore and Mia Wasikowska. Next, 71 (p5) in which Jack OConnell plays a disoriented British soldier trapped in war-torn Belfast. Phoenix favourite Emma Thompson is both writer and actor in Effie Gray (p6), which imagines the relationship between Victorian art critic John Ruskin and his teenage wife, played by Dakota Fanning. Back on screen together for the third time, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper play a childless couple in Depression-era drama Serena (p7). Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is by My Side (p8) rounds out the month.

November delivers two big hits. Timothy Spall deserves all the honours hes receiving for his star turn as the great iconic British painter in Mr Turner (p9). Ahead of the films run , join us for a Q&A with the director (and Phoenix Patron) Mike Leigh on October 27th. Mathematician Alan Turings computer cracked the Enigma Code, helping the Allies win WWII. No stranger to intrigue, plot twists and suspense, Benedict Cumberbatch gives his best performance as Turing in The Imitation Game (p10).

Phoenix Nights invites guest curators to present a favourite film at our monthly Friday late night slot. Join us at 11:30 pm on 3 October when film critic Mark Kermode does the honours.

See you at the movies! Elizabeth Taylor-Mead , Executive Director

  • FROM FRIDAY 3 OCTOBER

Ida 12A1hr 22. Poland/Denmark 2013. Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski. With Agata Kulesza, Agata Trzebuchowska, Dawid Ogrodnik. In Polish with English subtitles.

The 18 year old novice nun Anna (Agata Trzebokowska) is preparing to take her vows when when her Mother Superior insists that she meet her one known relative, having grown up as an orphan in the convent. Her aunt, Wanda (Agneta Kulesza), reveals to Anna the truth of her past: that she is Jewish, her parents were killed during World War II and that her real name is Ida. The pair embark on a journey to uncover more about Idas family roots, and in doing so reveal the trails of torment and anguish left by the Nazis . Ida may address the much covered topic of the Nazi atrocities, but director Pawel Pawlikowski (Last Resort and My Summer Of Love) brings a uniqueness in his ability to allow the drama to unfurl naturally.

    Maps to the Stars 18

    FROM FRIDAY 3 OCTOBER

1hr 52. Canada/USA/Germany/France 2014. Directed by David Cronenberg. With Sarah Gadon, John Cusack, Mia Wasikowska, Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson, Carrie Fisher.

Therapist Stafford Weiss (John Cusack) is a guru to the Hollywood stars and his wife Cristina (Olivia Williams) manages the career of their 13 year old former child-star son Benjie (Evan Bird), whos just returned home following time in rehab. Meanwhile, the scarred and traumatised Agatha Weiss (Mia Wasikowska) lands a job as an assistant to Havana Segrand (Julianne Moore), a fading Hollywood star obsessed with surpassing her mothers (Sarah Gadon) fame. Maps to the Stars is a tense, dark and humorous satire of corruption and vice in Hollywood, given additional bite but the ruthless direction of David Cronenberg who must know his subject matter all too well.

  • FROM FRIDAY 10 OCTOBER

71 151hr 39. UK 2014. Directed by Yann Demange. With Jack OConnell, Sam Reid, Sean Harris, Charlie Murphy.

Rising UK star Jack OConnell plays the wide-eyed British soldier, Gary Hook, who gets stationed in Belfast on a peacekeeping mission at the height of The Troubles in 1971. After a botched attempt to subdue rioters, Hook gets separated from his squadron and is left to fend for himself among the burnt out cars and rubble strewn streets of Belfast. After parts in Skins and This is England, OConnell really broke onto the UK cinema scene in 2013 alongside Ben Mendelsohn in the gritty Starred Up. OConnell impresses again in 71; counterbalancing an intensity of fear which would grip a soldier behind enemy lines with an awareness of the complex and controversial politics of his duty. Director Yann Demange also makes a promising feature length debut in this transition film from his TV background.

    FROM FRIDAY 17 OCTOBER

Effie Gray tbcUK 2014. Directed by Richard Laxton. With Dakota Fanning, Greg Wise, Emma Thompson, Claudia Cardinale, Tom Sturridge.

Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility, Brideshead Revisited) writes and co-stars in this film portrait of the eponymous socialite Effie Gray (Dakota Fanning; War of the Worlds). Shot on 35mm on beautiful sets in Venice, Scotland and London, Effie Gray focuses on Grays marriage to the essayist, critic and philanthropist John Ruskin, its eventual collapse and her falling in love with the artist John Millais. A strong performance by Dakota Fanning makes the story all the more engrossing, helped by the host of British co-stars including Robbie Coltrane, David Suchet, Julie Walters, James Fox and Derek Jacobi. A fascinating peek into the personal lives of the artistic elite in Victorian England, Effie Gray is a must see alongside Mike Leighs Mr Turner in which the critic Ruskin also features.

  • FROM FRIDAY 24 OCTOBER

Serena 151hr 50. USA/Czech Republic 2014. Directed by Susanne Bier. With Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Rhys Ifans, Sam Reid, Toby Jones, Sean Harris.

Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle) and Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook, Place Beyond the Pines) team up once again for Serena. Set in the depths of North Carolina during the Great Depression of the 1930s, timber magnate George Pemberton (Cooper) fights to maintain his business and his marriage to the independent minded and inquisitive Serena (Lawrence) as details of his personal history unravel. Both a romantic and an exhilarating drama, Serena recalls elements of P.T. Andersons There Will be Blood (2007) where the consequences of the cavalier pioneer spirit are realised in the form of family turmoil and emotional sacrifice. Serena also benefits from the directional vision of Susanne Bier who won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign language Film for In a Better World (2010).

    FROM FRIDAY 24 OCTOBER

Jimi: All Is By My Side 151hr 58. UK/Ireland /USA 2013. Directed by John Ridley. With Andr Benjamin, Imogen Poots, Burn Gorman, Hayley Atwell.

Andr Benjamin (one half of the hip-hop duo OutKast) stars as Jimi Hendrix in a biopic covering an influential year of the rock stars life from 1966-1967. The story follows the transition of Hendrix from being a relatively unknown session musician and backup guitarist to making his mark on music history as a soloist, culminating in his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Written and directed by Academy Award winner John Ridley (12 Years A Slave), All Is By My Side is an entertaining and probing look at the who and what that motivated Hendrix to become great.

The Imitation Game tbc1hr 53. UK/USA 2014. Directed by Morten Tyldum. With Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear.

The Imitation Game is a superb and timely look at one the most brilliant mathematical minds ever to have lived: Alan Turing. It follows Turings life from the great mathematician breaking the German Enigma Code at Bletchley Park during World War II, through to his own personal turmoil and shameful treatment by the British government. Directed by Morten Tyldum (The Headhunters) and based on the book by Andrew Hodges, The Imitation Game stars the engrossing Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) as Alan Turing, with Keira Knightley (Atonement) in the supporting role as Turings closest friend and fellow mathematician Joan Clarke. Cinema has long lacked a biopic of one the most influential people of the modern age, and The Imitation Game certainly does the life of Alan Turing no disservice.

2hrs 30. UK 2014. Directed by Mike Leigh. With Timothy Spall, Paul Jesson, Dorothy Atkinson, Marion Bailey, Karl Johnson, Ruth Sheen, Sandy Foster, Amy Dawson, Lesley Manville.

Director Mike Leigh (Vera Drake, Another Year) teams up with long-term collaborator Timothy Spall (Secrets and Lies, Topsy Turvey) for this poignant and insightful exploration into the life and work of the great British artist JMW Turner. Revealing the complexity of the man as well as the brilliance of the artist, Mr Turner looks specifically at the last part of the painters life and his turbulent membership of the Royal Academy of Arts, his uncomfortable association with the aristocracy and his complicated personal life. Whilst this film is in the mould of Leighs 1999 artist biopic about Gilbert and Sullivan, called Topsy-Turvey, Mr Turner looks more deeply at how an artist aims to deliver a moment of inspiration from a canvas to the hearts of an audience.
