mAKiNg THE JOUrNEY TO AUSTrALiAArriving in AustraliaAll students who are studying at Phoenix Academy, have the option of being met at the airportby a Phoenix representative (there is a section on the application form which you need to fillout). Our representative will meet your flight and take you to your permanent or temporaryaccommodation in Perth or Fremantle. If you have not yet advised us that you would like to begreeted at the airport upon arrival, please contact Ms Jessica Gorman the Admissions Officer, [email protected]

Convict Buildings –includingtheRoundHousebuildingwhichisthestate’soldestbuilding(datingbackto1831).Fremantle Prison –receivingitsfirstprisonersin1855andbuiltbytheprisonersthemselves,youcanhaveatourofthishistorical,nowunusedprison,whichissaidtobehaunted.Thesetoursarealsorunatnighttoaddtothefright!

BankingForstudentswhoareintendtoremaininAustraliaforsometime,itmakessensetoopenabankaccounthereinPerth.

InordertoopenabankaccountinAustralia,overseasstudentsneedtoprovidewrittenconfirmationoftheirenrolmentattheireducational institution,theirstudentcardaswellastheirpassport. Itnormallytakesaweekorsoforbankcardstobemailedtotheapplicant.Therearemanybanksstudentscanchooseto use and different banks offer different services, so it pays to‘shop around’. TransportationTheeasiestandcheapestwaytogettoclasseverydayisbyusingPerth’strainandbussystem.Studentsusuallytravelbetweenhomestayandschoolbypublictransportation.

SmartRider isTransperth’ssmartcardelectronicticketingsystem.Itusesaplastic,creditcardsizedcardthatyoucanaddvaluetoandthenusetopayyourfareonanyTransperthbus,trainorferry.

Students are given Smart Rider Application on Orientation. The Student SmartRider form must beauthorisedbythePhoenixAcademicCoordinatorbeforeapplyinginpersonatthePerthTrainStation.Itwillcost$5fortheapplication.

FremantleandPerthcitieshaveafreeCentralAreaTransit(CAT)busservice.Thisserviceoperateswithinthesetwoareasatnocost,usuallyevery15minutes.StudentsinWesternAustraliaarealsoabletoreceiveover50%discountonpublictransportwiththeirstudentcards.Pleasepresentyourcardtothebusdriverorconductortoreceivethisdiscountedfare.

EmergenciesIn the case of an emergency, telephone 000. This will put you in contact with the police, fire andambulanceservices.

EtiquetteSmoking is not permitted in public buildings or on public transport. Smoking is not permitted inrestaurants.Ifyouwishtosmokeinsomeone’shouse,itisgoodmannerstoaskpermission.Donotbeoffendediftheownerasksyounottosmokeinthehouse!

ChewinggumandeatingfoodnoisilyorwiththemouthopenisbadmannersinAustralia.SniffingandspittingarealsohabitsnotappreciatedbyAustralianpeople.

Leisure and Sporting ActivitiesThepleasantclimateandbeautifulenvironmentprovidenumerousopportunitiesforleisureandsportingactivities.

ParticipatinginsportingactivitiesisverypopularinAustraliaandthereareexcellentpublicfacilitiesforsportinPerthandFremantle.Thereareswimmingpools,ovals,tennisandsquashcourts,leisurecentres,basketballcourts,golfcourses,beachesetc.ManyAustraliansplayandwatchsportontheweekendsandoverseasstudentswillhavetheopportunitytodiscovermanynewandexcitingsports.Playingsportisagoodwayofmeetingpeopleandmakingfriends.

Nightlife and Other EventsOfcourse,therearenumerouscinemas,bars,pubs,cafesandrestaurantsforthosewhoenjoythenightlife.Phoenixalsohasstaffmemberswhoorganisetripsandeventsforoverseasstudentsprovidingthemwithyetanotheropportunityformeetingpeopleandvisitingsomeofourpopulartouristdestinations.

Oneofthestandardsdoesnotallowanothereducationprovidertoenrollastudentwhowantstotransfertoanothercourse,buthasnotcompletedsixmonthsofthefinalcourseofstudyyouplantoundertakeinAustralia. Ifyouwant to transferbeforehandyouneedyourprovider’spermission. Ifyouareunder18, to ensure your safety, you will be granted a visa only if there are arrangements in place for youraccommodation,supportandwelfare.

TheDepartmentofImmigrationandCitizenship(DIAC)regulationstatesthatstudentsonstudentvisasmustattend80%oftheirclassestosatisfyimmigrationrequirements.Shouldyourattendancefallbelowthislevel,youmaybeatriskofhavingyourvisacancelledandbeingforcedtoreturntoyourhomecountry.

AttendanceatPhoenixAcademyisbasedontheactualdaysofstudyfromthedateofcommencement,andcalculatedasapercentageattheendofeveryclassweek.AspertheConditionsofEnrolment,attendancemustnot fallbelow80%atanygiven time.Shouldyourattendance fallbelow80%,PhoenixAcademyreservestherighttocancelorsuspendyourenrolment,whichwillputyourvisaatrisk.

Students are never allowed to stay in another residence overnight without permission from theHomestay family.The Homestay family must be given the full address and telephone number oftheplacewherethestudentisstaying.Homestayfamiliesareaskedtocontacttheotherfamilyandconfirmthattheirstudentwillbeintheircare.

10. Studentsarenevertoenteralicensedpremiseunlessinthecompanyoftheirguardianorhomestayfamily.Alicensedpremiseisaplacewherealcoholissoldandconsumed.UnderAustralianlawitisanoffenceforminorstobeonsuchpremisesandoffenderswillbeprosecuted.

11. Nostudentundertheageof18isallowedtodrinkorhaveintheirpossessionanyalcohol.12. StudentsmustberespectfuloftherulesestablishedbytheirHomestayfamily.Theyshouldbehelpful

andcourteousandbehave,aswouldanyguestintheirhouse.13. WorkPermits–Studentswithpermissionfromparentscanworkonlyonweekends(nolaterthantheir

PHOENix COUrSESENgLiSH COUrSESgeneral English Course (Beginner to Advanced)These courses are designed for students who require English language skills for communication ineveryday situations. The courses have a detailed curriculum, which enable students to recognise andrespondtolanguageusedbynativespeakers.

Eachcourseisdividedinto6weekmodules.Studentscanchoosetheircourselength-fromaweektoayearormore.Thestructures,functionsandvocabularycoveredinthecoursearetopic-basedandarepresentedandpractisedwithinacommunicativeframework,whichgivesstudentsanopportunitytouselanguageforarealpurpose.

Timeisgivenequallytothefourskills-speaking,listening,readingandwriting.Teachersareencouragedtogivestudentsconstantfeedbackinregardtotheirneedsasindividuallanguagelearners.Theteacherwillrespondbyadjustingtheprogrammetohis/herparticulargroupoflearners.

internship ProgramThe Phoenix Academy Industry Internship Program is able to satisfy both the language and industryexperience needs of international students and professionals by providing a comprehensive programthat combines intensive language and/or university studies with an internship compatible with anapplicant’s employment and/or educational history. The program provides a unique opportunity forthoseseekingspecialisedtrainingandexperienceinAustraliaandguaranteesthementryintoAustralia’sleadingorganisations.

The Industry Internship Program is made of up two different components – a Study Component andthe Internship Component.
