COWRA POW BREAKOUT ANNIVERSARY T h i s W e d n e s d a y i s t h e 6 5 t h anniversary of the Cowra POW camp breakout, where at 2am on August 5, 1944, Japanese prisoners launched their mass escape. An ecumenical service will be held at St John’s Anglican Church on the eve of the breakout, Tuesday August 4 at 4:45pm. Also on Tuesday, a free screening of “Broken Sun” will be shown at 7:30pm upstairs theatrette of Cowra Civic Centre Darling Street. This film is a fictitious account based on events surrounding the breakout. The formalities on Wednesday August 5, will begin with a laying of wreaths at the most significant sites around town. 8:15am Squire Park Memorial Sculpture. 9:00am Doncaster Memorial on Canowindra Road. 9:30am The Australian and Japanese War Cemeteries, immediately followed by a short Buddhist ceremony performed by Reverend W. Saito from the Koyasan Shingon Mission of Australia. 10:00am Marion Starr’s grave. 10:30am Cowra POW Campsite and Italian Memorial. Includes commissioning of the POW Observation Tower solar powered audio system and morning tea. Morning tea tickets are $8.00, bookings essential. 11:45am Garrison Gates on Binni Creek Road 5.30pm Cowra Breakout Association AGM at Cowra Services Club. 6.30 for 7.00pm Cowra Breakout Association Dinner at Cowra Services Club. WARM BEETROOT SALAD

8 beetroot ½ bunch silverbeet 2 teaspoons olive oil 2 garlic cloves, chopped ⅓ cup walnuts, chopped 1½ tablespoons balsamic vinegar 70g goats cheese

Preheat oven to 200°C. Trim beetroot ends and leaves, reserving the smaller leaves. Wash beetroot, pat dry, place in a baking dish & cover tightly with foil. Roast for 55 minutes. Set aside until cool enough to handle. Wearing rubber gloves, peel and halve each beetroot, place in a large heat-proof bowl & cover to keep warm. Wash silverbeet and reserved small beetroot leaves. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat, add garlic and walnuts. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes or until walnuts are toasted. Add leaves to pan, stir for 1-2 minutes or until leaves are just wilted. Add leaves and vinegar to beetroot, season with pepper, toss to combine. Top with crumbled cheese. Serve with steak, lamb or pork chops.

BEST TIME TO PLANT BARE ROOTED TREES Getting bare rooted trees in the ground now gives them plenty of time to establish before summer. Generally, planting after August is too late because they start to shoot and then transplanting becomes a problem. Remember to prune at planting time so tops match the root size, and keep roots moist from purchase until planting time. Plant the trees as soon as you can when you get them home. Dig a hole, or better yet get one dug for you, with a good wide diameter but not depth, because you want to plant the trees at the same level as when they were originally in the ground. Look at the base of the stem for a slight change in colour - that’s where it was in the ground previously. Water straight after you have backfilled, but don’t fertilise until Spring.

RAILWAY CENTENARY TO BE A CELEBRATION The meeting for Canowindra Railway Centenary 2010 held last Thursday was of the general opinion that the Rail Centenary 2010 would afford a reason for a community involved town celebration. The aim of the meeting to form a planning

committee was adopted by the group, and general discussion took place on ideas for the celebration. The next meeting will be held Thursday August 27 at 6.30pm, at the Canowindra Services Club. See you there!

TIGER CUBS The Junior Tigers took on Forbes Magpies at The Oval on Saturday where the Chris Williams Under 8s try scores were Josh Middleton, Andrew Cutmore and Jacob Fisher. Andrew converted his own try for a very close 14 all score. The Canowindra Services Club Under 10s were unlucky enough not to cross the line but they all played very well with Jordan Kemper, Joe Coady and Harley Smith leading the attack while Richard Carlon, Harry Jeffrey and Shae Reid strong in defence. The Earsmans Mixed Concrete Under 12s held their opposition scoreless as Jumara Cutmore scored a hat trick of tries and Callum Clyburn got the double. Jordie Brown and Zak Whitehead chipped in with a try each while Callum kicked two conversions and Jumara, Max Wensley and Tylah Reid kicked one each. The Canowindra Produce Under 14s won 34-6 as Josh Trayhurn scored twice backed up by Simon Whatman, Bradyn Cassidy, Jared Zahra who scored one try each. Tim Middleton kicked four goals while Bradyn converted his own try from in front. While the Kens Service Centre Under 16s didn’t quite win Josh Cooney and Isaac Beath scored a try apiece while Luke Watt kicked one conversion as they went down to Forbes 22-10. This week the Junior Tigers have a bye while on August 15 they play their last competition game at Grenfell against the Goannas. The Under 10s will be playing Parkes at Red Bend on Saturday. The game starts at 10:15am so be there at least half an hour earlier.

SOARING HIGH If you have noticed a pristine white balloon with red markings drifting majestically across the Canowindra horizon in the last few weeks, you are witnessing the talents of Yoshi Shigyo. Yoshi and his wife Mayumi are from New Zealand and have been staying in town over the past few weeks. Yoshi said that they love Canowindra as it is so friendly and welcoming. Having completed his private license at the end of June, Yoshi is currently getting his hours up to qualify for his commercial license which requires 75 hours of flying. The Shigyo’s will be leaving Canowindra and heading back to New Zealand at the end of this week. Having lifted off from various locations around Canowindra, Yoshi has experienced some wonderful weather in what truly is the Balloon Capital of Australia. Good luck Yoshi with your future ballooning adventures, and farewell from us all. We hope to see you and Mayumi back here again soon.

BOWLS HITS A WALLSEND The Canowindra #6 Pennant Squad unfortunately went down in their matches in Newcastle at the State Finals on the weekend. Saturday, their first game was against Greenlees Park where they won 68-48. They played Cudgen Leagues next in a strong game, although they were defeated 56-53. Sunday saw the boys take on Glen Innes and again the bowls didn’t go their way, going down 50-59. Glen Innes went on to win the State Pennant by 9 shots over Doyalson Wyee RSL 61-52. It was a great weekend with good strong games, however the bowls just didn't go their way. Thanks to all the supporters who went and cheered our boys on, and we hope to get there again next year.

CONVINCING WINNERS IN LAST GAME Canowindra under 18s finished the season with a one sided 26-12 victory over the Condobolin Rams. The Tigers were brilliant in their final game, repelling the Condobolin attack with solid defence, then showing great attacking skills to cross for five tries. First Grade - A Rob Burn inspired Canowindra Tigers almost snatched a last minute victory against the strong Condobolin Rams outfit. Burn along with Charles Lawrence had the Condobolin defence at sixes and sevens with most touches of the ball. In front of a vocal crowd at Tom Clyburn Oval, the very entertaining game went down to the final minute. With Condobolin holding out for a 36-28 victory. GOOLOOGONG PRESIDENTS DAY RESULTS Ron Brooks took a team to Gooloogong to represent The Canowindra Bowling Club last Sunday. Ron played well and lead his players to a 2 game victory which brought them in third overall for the day.
