Executive Summary

In2017,thestation’smajorfinaloutputsarecategorizedintoresearchanddevelopment(R&D);extensionsupport,educationandcommunicationservices;capacityenhancement;partnerships;anddevelopmentofextensionmodalitiesandproductionmodels.

SignificantaccomplishmentsoncropprotectionincludedtheunderstandingofricegrainbugbiologyandthedevelopmentofpowderformofentomopathogenicfungiMetarhiziumanisopliaeandBeauveriabassiana.SeveralricelineswerefoundadaptabletoAgusanenvironmentincludingsubmergedandzinc-deficientsoils.Partialresultonnutrientmanagementindicatedthattheoptimumrateofnitrogenapplicationforirrigatedlowlandriceis95kg/hectare.

PhilRiceproductsandserviceswereshowcasedinseveralpublicevents.Severalknowledgesharingandlearningprocessesandplatformswereconceptualized,pilot-tested,andusedforcapacityenhancementundertakings.The10-5challengewasinstrumentalinpackagingoflocation-specificbestpracticesthatcanachieve8t/haatP9/kgcostinwetseason,and7.5t/haatP7/kgcostindryseason.TheOne-Stop-InformationShopofferedfarmingtechnologiesandsolutionstomorethan2,000farmers,studentsandotherstakeholders.PhilRiceknowledgeproductswerealsotranslatedintolocallanguage.

Afirst-of-its-kindricebootcampforout-of-schoolyouthinRTRomualdez,AgusandelNortewasorganized.Theagro-enterpriseclustersoftheRiceBISprojectsoldtheirproducetoahigh-pricebuyerwithadifferenceofP2/kg.LakbayPalaywasparticipatedinbymorethan500and800participantsinthefirstandsecondcroppingseasons,respectively.

Partnershipswithlocalgovernmentunits,regionalfieldofficesoftheDepartmentofAgriculture,DepartmentofAgrarianReform,CaragaStateUniversity,FatherSaturninoUriosUniversity,andLandBankofthePhilippineswereeithercreatedorrevitalized.Memorandumofagreementswereforged.ThePalayamananandAgroenterpriseprojectswerealsoinitiatedinneighboringcommunities.

ThestationobtainedanetannualincomeofmorethanP5Min2017,whichwasderivedfromseedproduction;rentalfrompostharvestfacilities,guesthouse,anddormitory;andfromcomponentsofrice-basedenterprisessuchasswinefattening,andproductionofmushroom,vegetables,andpoultryeggs.

Learning FarmAbner T. Montecalvo

TheLearningFarm,isprimarilyusedtodemonstrateintegratedanddiversifiedrice-basedproductionsystems.Itwillprovideexperientiallearningopportunitiestolearnersortrainees(i.e.,farmers,student-trainees)on-farmoptionsorcomponents.Thefarmoptionsorcomponentsrefertothefundamentals/elementsorcompositionofthewholeproductionsystemasenvisionedintheCleanGPSOn-farmLearningField.Itaimedtoachieveaholisticandcomprehensivetechnologypackagesanddevelopingalternativeinputstocomeupwithsustainableandcost-effectivericeandrice-basedfarmingsystemswhilepreservingournaturalresources.

RiceRelayPlantingshowcasedthethreegrowthphasesofriceina3,000m2plotandwithsequentialplantingofevery30days.

Despiteadvancedricetechnologies,ricegrainyieldinCaragaisabout4t/hawhileinputcostisaboutP11akiloofpalay.Thus,astudyPalayabangan:The10-5Challengewasdevelopedtodocumenthigh-yieldingtechnologiesofhybridandinbredvarieties,whichcanbefine-tunedintheregion.

Thedryseason(JanuarytoJune)andwetseason(JulytoDecember)2017croppingperiodofPalayabangan:The10-5ChallengefielddemonstrationswereconductedatPhilRiceAgusanExperimentStation.Sixcompetingentriesparticipatedinthecompetition:SLAgritechCorp.(dryandwetcroppingseasons),SyngentaPhil’s.(drycroppingseasons),BayerCropScienceInc.(dryandwetcroppingseasons),KAYAKAPA(dryandwetcroppingseasons),FillRise/RJamisola(dryandwetcroppingseasons),andGoodHarvest/ILauzon(dryandwetcroppingseasons).Theparticipantswereprovidedwith0.2haplotareaasdemonstrationfarm.Allactivitiessuchascosting,applicationoftechnology,andyieldandagronomicdataweredocumentedforEconomicRateofReturn(ERR)analysisandtechnologyperformance.

PhilRiceAgusanisidentifiedasoneoftheagro-ecotouristdestinationsintheprovinceofAgusandelNortebecauseofitsdynamicriceresearchanddevelopmentactivities.

TheOne-Stop-Informationshop(OSIS)generallyaimedtodeveloptheskillsandenhancethetechnicalcapacityofthericefarmers,agriculturalextensionworkers,researchersandstudentsthroughexhibits,fieldexposureandbriefings,displayanddistributionofknowledgeproducts.Italsowelcomeswalk-invisitorsfromotherregions.

Thestationhasaccommodated2,234visitorscomposedofstudents(46%),farmers(28%),agriculturalextensionworkers(16%),andfew(10%)visitorswhodidnotaffixtheiraffiliations.Thevisitorswerebriefedonthecurrentprojectsandactivitiesofthestationandtheyweretouredtoobserveshowcasedtechnologies.

Fourexhibitsweredisplayedduringfielddaysandlocalevents;andKPssuchasbooks,leaflets,andricetechnologybulletinwerealsodistributed.Farmerswerealsoencouragedtoreplicatethericetechnologiesandbusinessenterprisesofthestationsuchasswine,mushroom,andvegetableproductionasothersourceofincome.

Intensified Rice-Based Agribio System: PhilRice AES Mushroom ProductionAT Montecalvo, BS Mejia, JS Darasin, and WG Libres

MushroomproductionwasoperationalizedinthestationfromJanuarytoNovember2017togenerateincomeandlivelihood,andmaximizetheutilizationofrice-basedbiomasstoincreasefarmincomeandenhancetheuseofresourcesinthericeenvironment.Thestationproducesmushroomgrainspawn,fruitingbags,andharvestedfreshmushroomfruit.

MushroomproductioncomponentgaveastationgrossincomeofP161,700.80fromlastyear’sP115,583.20.ProductioncostswasP110,535.75withagrossmarginofP51,165.05resultinginanetincomeofP49,598.27.

Trainingprogramsonmushroomproductionforstudents,extensionworkers,stakeholders,privatesector,andindividualfarmerswerealsoconducted.AcollaborativeprojectbetweenthelocalgovernmentunitofCabadbaranandPhilRiceonmushroomproductionwasalsoconducted.

Integrated Rice-Duck Organic Seed Production GF Estoy Jr., AT Montecalvo, RR Narisma, AE Lincuna Jr., and C Jugalbot

Thisprojectaimedtoexplorethepositiveintegrationofducksintheirrigatedricefarmforincreasedyieldandreducedriceseedproductioncost.Italsoaimedtogenerateadditionalincomebyproducinggoodduckmeatandeggs.

Aftertwocroppingseasons(DS&WS2017),the1harice-duckdemofarmseedproductiongainedanincomeofP90,277.22perhectareandharvested3,883piecesofgoodeggs.Paterosducklingswasalsomassproducedintheproject.Fourlow-costincubators(homemadeincubator)werefabricatedatPhilRiceAgusanandsuccessfullyproduced215Paterosducklings.

Threeagro-enterpriseclustersaredevelopedinEsperanza,AgusandelSurcomposedof43clusteredfarmers.Theagro-enterpriseclustersaredevelopedusingthe8-stepapproachtoagro-enterprisedevelopment.Atechno-democovering53.1hawasestablished;31.1,irrigated,while22,rainfed.Theirrigatedtechno-demohadanaverageyieldof4.05t/ha,ahalftondifferencefromthebaselineyieldofthesamecroppingseason.

Therainfedareashadanaverageyieldof3.73t/ha,astarkcontrastfromthe3.0t/hayieldofWS2016.Clusteredfarmersusedhigh-qualityseedsand25of43clusteredfarmersusedMinusOneElementTechnique.

FarmersarealsolinkedtothemarketthroughmarketchainstudyandbuildingofrelationshipswithBusinessDevelopmentServicesproviders.Clustershascontactedbuyersanddeliveredtothebuyerwiththehighestprice.
