Dear Brother McFarland:

I am in receipt of your form letter and statementsent to all missionaries through their forwarding agentsconcerning the costs of engravings for the Missionary PrayerCalander and Calanders ordered by missionaries.

according to your statement we owe Mission Services|7«50yfor engravings which check has been forwarded byIra^^eWelt, our forwarding agent. However if you willcheck your records you will find that I paid for theengravings for the Calander with a check dated July 21, 1952and sent to you at the same time we submitted our pictures. We thought from you^'previous advertising that this wasthe procedure you desired.

Mr. and Mrs. Herget and Mr-and Mrs. Fream also paidfor their engravings at the time of sending the desiredpictures and have also been billed for them a second time. However their forwarding agents did not go ahead andsubmit a second check in payment.

We hope the matter can be.cleared by your previousrecords. Please accept the second' check (dated in Dec.from Mrs, De'Welt) as a gift for iie excellent servicesyou are rendering for the cause ofslndependent DirectSupport Missions. Thanks for your recent letter and your new contribution cardenclosed. Also thanks for the latest. "Directory of ChristianMissions." Two corrections are needed under No, 19 JAMICACHRISTIAN MISSION; 1, Woodrovj and Mar jorie Phillips (91? South

8th St. San Jose, Calif.) Not ^ust 8th St.2. James and Carol Herget (Box 162 Elizabethton, Tenn.) Not

First Christian Church,

In the March 21st issue of the Christian Standard, Just received by us, you have an item concerning Brother and SisterCliford Edwards, native workers here in Jamaica, Brother McFarland, with all our hearts/we believe Bro. Sdvrards has a rightto advertise in any manner that he sees fit, but we do object toanyone other than missionaries directly associated with theJAMAICA CHRISTIAN MISSION acivertising under that name. The onlyforeign address for the JAI^ICA CHRISTIAN MISSION is HALF-VIAY-TREEP.O. Jamaica, B.W.I. We wish you would make a correction of thisrecent advertisment on behilf of Bro. Edwards. The address ofthe Jamaica Christian Missi^on is not Ewarton P.O. and Brother andSister Edwards are not missionaries directly associated with themission, but rather native [workers in their own land, even asthere are many other native workers in Jamaica.

Bro. Clifford is a good worker. He helps us in our Seminaryin two classes and preaches'amcjng the native churches, performingbaptisms and weddings for many \f them. We are all behind him inevery way and do not wany anyoneN/bo misconstrue this letter to thecontrary. However, since the entire advertising effort, responsibilities, aid to native leaders etc. is paid by monies sent tothe three missionary families\listed under the JAMAICA Gt-:RISTIANMISSION we feel it is unfair for Bro^ Edwards to advertise underthat name since he bears none df the] expenses or responsibilitiesinvolved. The Jamaica Cliristian Mission, of which Donald Freamis trustee, provides Bro. Edwards ̂ use entirely free of cost tohimself, paying all taxes etc. on>fthe property where he lives, andwe have upon occasion aided him in^other ways. We will continueto do so and will work in closest c^p^ration,_-but jaise cannot allowanyone other than those missionaries directly associated togetherand aiding in the financial burdens to use the name JAMAICACHRISTIAN MISSION.

-LET CHRIST BLESS YOUR LIFE!

HEAVEN IS OUR GOAL

Paul says in the book of Hebrev/s,"For he looked for a city whichhath foundations, whose builder andmaker is God."

The great patriarch, Abraham, byfaith looked far beyond his own time and seeing the power of the Almighty placed perfect trust in Godand set his hope not on the thingsof this life but upon Heaven,

We need the same un-vravering faithtoday. Perhaps the reason our Christianity is often so weak is that we have forgotten our goal. When you don't have enough work, money, food, clothing, or shelter, the things of this life seem verybig and many men i-jill trade theirhope of hoaven for a few acres ofland or a few povmds in the bank. Many will forsake the Sianday services to work in the field, builda house, plant a cultivation orjust entertain a friend. You haveforgotten your goal.

Nothing in this life is worth onesquare foot of heaven. All thekings and princes of earth don'thave enough wealth or power tomake sure they will enter there. If you are forsaking the church orif you have never taken Christ asyour Saviour and become a memberof His church you need to catch avision of your goal. Heaven iseternal life, eternal peace, joy,

The church at Mountain View asksyour continued prayers as they arebuilding for Christ in Jamaica,They are to be commended by allthe brethren for the faith and energy shown in completing theirministers cottage and in their plans for serving Christ in even agreater way in their community,

sHeaven is our Goal (cont.)

and service before the throne ofGod. It knows no sorrow, pain ordeath. Its glories are beyond the*Imagination or comprehension ofman. This is the goal of everyborn again Christian.

God has promised Heaven to all those who obey His son Jesus Christ,

I know every one desires to go toHeaven, but have you done anythingto make Heaven your goal? .Haveyou made any preparation to enterHeaven? No one v;ho is going on atrip to a foreign country goeswithout making adequate preparation, Yet some folks seem to thinkthat they are going to get intoHeaven without any preparation atall.

You must hear the gospel messageand believe that Christ died foryour sins. You must turn from sinfor it v/ill keep you out of Heavenand you must be baptized that youmight be "born of the water and theSpirit." Then and only then are"you prepared for Heaven.

Having made preparation you mustnow "press on toward the goal ofthe high calling in Christ Jesus."Ckice having chosen Christ you cannot turn your back upon Him without losing sight of your goal. Byprayer to God, by study of His HolyWord, by consecration to His Churchyou can lift your eyes above theworld and look Heavenward,

What a blessing to see as Isaiah ofold, "The throne high and liftedup," and the glory of God upon it.What a priviledge to view with thebeloved Apostle John the streets ofpure gold and the city that knowsno night, V/ith Abraham we can say"We look for a city without founda-tl6ns-a city beyond the abilitiesof man to create-a city of righteousness and purity-a city for theredeemed and only for the redeemed, whose builder and maker is God,

Heaven is our goal. Ifeve faith inGod. Keep your eyes and your heartaffections on that clestial city.

YOUR BIBLE EVERY DAY

THE WOMEN'S CORNER

In I Cor. 1^;3^ we read, "Let yourwomen keep silent in the churches."There have been many things saidand wtitten about the teaching of|Paul on this matter and it is thebelief of the Church of Christ thatthe Scripture teaches that womenare to be silent. Usually we applythis to women preaching and teaching men v;hich is no doubt the burden of Paul's teaching.

However, we would like to apply it^ little further than women keepingsilent where preaching is concernedThe Scripture says to KEEP SILENT!

Many times while visiting in someof the Churches of Christ through-jout Jamaica we have found.that women are doing anything but keepingsilent. There is a constant mur-:muring, a shuffling of feet and I'/a-Iking up and doi'm, and a sudden'shout that shows anything but the:filling of the Holy Spirit, When:a woman shouts out and convulsivelyshakos her whole body until it dis-iturbs the i')hole. congregation, sheis not filled with the Holy Spirit,

The Scripture says that women areto be SILEHTl If a v;oman will ke-eip the conm^andment of the Lordshe will in no way make any kind ofdisturbing sound but will sit quietly listening to the message andperhaps occasionally breathe a quiet amen.

The Scriptures teach us that thefruit, or the sign of the Holy Sp-jirit in a Christian's life is a{quiet, meek, huiable spirit, full of{self control. Sometimes your mi- ■Isslonarles are Introduced after a'service to the "sisters" of the: congregation and we become ai.are'of the fact that some of those veryv/omen had a few moments before disturbed the quiet Holy Spirit of theLord Jesus during tho invitationservice. Wo are led to believethat they are not filled with theSpirit of Christ but need teachingfrom the Elders of the Church wiioseresponsibility it is to keep orderand as Paul says, "command to beunder obedience,"

LET TtlE WOMEN KEEP SILENT!

Hasn't .the Coronation season been exciting? Your missionaries have been asthrilled as anyone over the lovely f3.ags,lights, and decorations that hs-ve brightened the towns and villages throioghout Jamaica, It certainly is wnderful to celebrate the crowning of a Queen. I supposeeach one of us has thought what a thrill itwould be to have been there to help withthe croT/ning of. the Queen,

Young People, have you ever consideredhow much greater it would be to crown theLord Jesus King of-your life? If we loveHim we will do that very thing and obey Himin all of His commandments. The time willnever come vdien the subjects of the BritishEmpire will wear a crown with the Queen,-God's Word tdlls us that we will vreaf a'crown when we 37eign with our King, "Be ThouFaithful unto death and' I will give thee acrown of Life." Rev. 2:10. And again, "Blessed is the man who endureth temptation forwhen he is tried hd shall rdceivo'a crownof life which the Lord has promised to" themwho love Him," James 1:12

, ■ ■ AYou or I will never wear the royal -croTm

of the British Empire, but if we remainfaithful to our Lord and King, we will someday reign \-flth Him and wear a cro;m of fargreater value than any earthly crov/n. Towear-a crown with Christ - to have Himplace it upon our head as we kneel beforeHis throne in the day of judgement, will bea joy greater than any we have ever known.

Are you preparing for the great Coronation Day when Christ will crown His servants? Are"you walking in the steps of theMaster and have your garments been washedin the blood of the Lamb? The day willcome when each one of us will stand beforethe judgement throne of God to receiveeither a crown or a sentence of eteinaldeath. The day is coming, young people -.PREPARE FOR THAT DAY. Accept Christ asyour Saviour, be baptized for the remissionof 'your siris 'arid walk daily in the Christian pathway,

" WIN- ANOIHEa FOR CHRIST. THIS MONTH "

" NO HOLIDAYS "

Vacation time from schools or from work

is just a nice tioio of the year, Augustwith its holidays has been a nice monthand we suppose that all of you have beenenjoying it. It is a time when we lay ai-side our work for a little while and go onan outing or rest and sleep a little Ion-;ger than usual. !

The question comes to our minds about aholiday from the Lord's v/ork and the lifeof a Christian? Do we have time for a

holiday? Can A Christian take time offand just spend a little vacation vrith theworld and the things he once did beforebecoming a Christian?

As good soldiers of the Lord Jesus, wemust remember that we are in a continual

warfare against sin. There 5.3 no time forvacation or holidays. We must rememberthat God is e^cpecting us to giVo of ourvery best to Him. First he wants ourhearts, and then obedience to His commandof repenting from sin and becoming a childof God through baptism. He wants us tocontinue steadfastly in living the Christian life.

Many young people would gladly lay downtheir lives for the Master. In the daysof old, thousands of people became martyrsfor their faith. But do you know that itis harder to live a Christian life day byday all of your life than f.t is to justone time be killed for your faith? i

The day that a young person becomes aChristian is a happy day for him. He isfull of determination to follow the Lordand to live a consecrated life. Many timeshe starts out giving his testimony to theworld and lives a wonderful example to hisfellov; men. But as time goes on the devilcomes and tries to destro]'' him, first bytempting him to small things that lead a-way from the church and then finally bydestroying his Christian life altogether,

"He that endureth to the end shall be

saved." Your Christian life must be aconstant testimony. There is no holidayfrom living for Jesus. Every sun thatsets should have seen you working for yourLord and living true to Him that day.Keep yourselves pure and serve the LordJ

" A HAPPY HOME-COMING "

The Scrp-ptui-es teach us that the angelsof heaven rejoice over one sinner that re-penteth. When a person repents of his sinsand has them ̂ mshed away in the \\ratGrs ofChristian baptism, he becomes a child ofGod; he is united with God and God's family, the church. Vftiat a happy home comingit is for the new child of God and for hisbrothers and sisters in Christ.

Ena Brown, of Diamond, experienced thishappy home coming on the 23rd of July, kiss Brown was buried with her Lord at thesea-side, and rose to walk in newness oflife. Let us pray for her that she maywalk in the pathtvay of service for the Master. Miss Brown is secretary for the LFJin Diamond, and is studying to be a schoolteacher.

JESUS AND THE CHILDREN

"I would like to see Jesus,"said a little girl. "I would liketo see Jesus, too," said a littleboy. "So would we," said the restof the children.

"Let us ask our mothers totake us to see Mm,"said one. Andthey all agreed.

The mothers were glad to taketheir children to see Jesus. Sothey all started out to the placewhere Jesus was teaching and healing sick people.

On the v/ay, the children askedamong themselves, "Do you think Hewill speak to US? "I have heardmany kind things He has done. I donot believe He will tvirn us away,"

Soon they met other motherswith their children. They were allgoing to see Jesus, too. On and onthey walked to the place ■v/here .Jesus was, "There Ho isJ" someoneeEClaimed. "Let us hurry,"

But Jesus' helpers stopped ,them, "You cannot see Jesus now. Heis too tired to be bothered. Besides, He does not have time forchildren. He is too busy with thegrown-up people."

The children turned sadly a-way. But Jesus saw them. He saidto His helpers, "Don't send thechildren away. My kingdom shall bemade up of people'who are likechildren in their hearts." Then Heturned to the children, "Come to Mel!He said. And He held out His arms.

August 1953Dear an Friends

THE POV/ER OF THE GOSPEL —

The message of the risen Saviour and His church is still winningmen for Christ in Jamaica. During the first six months of this year there were 785 confessions of faith in the churches of Christ in this island, Yet v/e must sadly report that of this number only 239 were baptized, The gospel has not failed but there is a lack of trained leadership to TEACH those who are vron, 173 "who had previously been baptizedcame into fellowship with the churches of Christ.

SENIOR BANQUET —The last Friday of July the five graduating seniors of the Jamaica

Bible Seminary were the guests of honor at a student-faculty banquet. The banquet, a Jamaican feast of curried goat and rice, boiled green bananas, and avocado and lettuce saladwas spread on long tables in the entrance hall of the newly completedSeminary building. During the meal, the Seniors and teachers gave expressions of appreciation and farewell, and afterwards the Seniors presenteda short play. These five young menhave already begun their ministry invarious parts of the island, thusfulfilling a long- time dream bothon their part and ours. They allneed our prayers as they preach andteach among their own people,

July and August have been the time for district rallies. We loadedup the car to overflo\d.ng v/ith Bible School literature, used clothingand ourselves and set out each Sunday to teach, preach, praise, and prayamong the native churches. Woodrow has taught t\d.ce each afternooning these rallies and has preached every evening, Marjorie has heldwomen's classes at each rally. Your prayers to the Lord have givenWoodrow strength for this labor of love. Over 1000 native Christianshave sacrificed of their tiny incomes to make the trips to attend theserallies,

SUMMER SLUMP —

There has not been a slump in souls won or in hours of labor, buta decided decrease in our Income. Perhaps you can help us to completeour obligations for this season of the year. Pray about it, and if youcan, become our partner with the Lord to reap His harvest in Jamaica.

THANKS —

To all of you who have so faithfully remembered us in your prayers, with your letter^ and with your gifts. Thanks be to God wlio has givenus strength for everyday. Good-by for now, and may our God bless youand keep you all is our prayer.
