Philip II's Monarchy

Philip II (1556 – 1598) His empire was the most powerful of the

time. It consisted of Spain, the Low Countries, a large part of Italy and other territories in Central Eurpe, thes Castilian Empire in America and numerous posesions in North Africa.

Philip II was the son of a Portuguese princes (Isabella of Portugal). In 1580, the King of Portugal died leaving no heirs, and Philip II claimed the roght to de Portuguese Crown, extended his possesions throughout Africa, Asia and Brazil

The King tuled all his Territories from Madrid, ehre he installed his court, because he cosidered Sepain to be the Centre of his monarchy. For this reason, it was called the Hispanic Monarchy

Philip II's Policies

Two objetives: to preserve his territories and to defend Catholicism. The king refused to give his subjects religious freedom and suppressed protestantism. The Musulmans and Jewish descendant were expulsed of the Hispanic Monarchy. (blood cleaning)

War with France: Philip II won the battle in San Quintín (1557)

Confrontation with the Turks: For brake the musulman expansion. They defeat in Battle Of Lepanto (1571)
