PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY OF ORANGE COUNTY AND THE COMMITTEES 6TH ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA FESTIVAL

Our 6th Annual High School Orchestra Festival would not be possible without the valued partnership and collaboration with our colleagues at Segerstrom Center for the Arts and the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall – Tom Lane, Christine Upham, Steve Sanchez, and all of the theatre operations and security team! Thank you for your continued invaluable assistance and expertise in producing this wonderful event!

March is California Arts Education Month. Join us in celebrating classical music and enriching lives with the sounds of music!

It is the pleasure of The Committees of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County to welcome you to the Sixth Annual High School Orchestra Festival in the world-class Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. You will be sharing in a musical journey with special performances of fifteen high school orchestras from nine school districts across Orange County, with one new orchestra joining the fourteen returning ones. We especially thank you for coming to listen, appreciate, applaud, and encourage the talented instrumentalists in each orchestra, along with each excellent director.

It has been said that to study and play an instrument in school often provides meaningful music activities throughout life. We can imagine that is the reason for which you are here. Let’s celebrate the students, their families and friends, and their schools this day!

Mary CheliusPresident, The Committees of the Philharmonic Society

Marina High School, a California Distinguished School located in Huntington Beach has strong academics and boasts some of the highest AP Test pass rates in the Huntington Beach Union High School District. A rigorous academic base along with a commitment to the arts, helps us produce highly motivated, well rounded students. We are proud to represent our school on this stage.

The Marina string program was revived eight years ago after an almost 20-year absence on campus. Grant money from the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee was instrumental in helping this revival. These grants allowed for the purchase of nearly all the instruments you see in our ensemble.

The ensemble regularly takes part in the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Festival and most recently was invited to take part in the Disneyland Resort Community Art’s Showcase. One of our highlights was premiering music of composer David Bertok in 2016.

Students donate and fundraise to help purchase music and travel to festivals. Donations also help provide our string coach who is in class two days a week.

We also offer free lessons to beginning students and those new to the program during first semester. During second semester, we offer a free 8-week lesson program to students who choose to take private lessons.

The Huntington Beach High School Academy for the Performing Arts Festival Orchestra represents the finest orchestral students in the Academy for the Performing Arts (APA) Orchestra Department. APA is a magnet performing arts program for the HBUHSD. In addition to the Festival Orchestra, students participate in a variety of chamber music ensembles, including String Ensemble, Woodwind Choir, Saxophone Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Piano Ensemble, as well as Music Academics classes (history and theory), AP Music Theory, and Musical Theater Pit Orchestra—currently in production with a 35-piece student orchestra for Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Phantom of the Opera.” The Huntington Beach High School Music Department consists of the Oiler Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, 2 Jazz Big Bands, competitive Drum Line, and Color Guard. The program’s main focus is to incite a love of quality musical arts, and to encourage a lifelong participation in the arts as a performer, educator, and/or patron.

Gregg Gilboe is currently in his twenty-sixth year as the Director of Instrumental Music at HBHS, including the past 22 with APA. His education includes degrees of a B.S. in Music Education from the University of Illinois, an M.M. in Percussion Performance from USC, and a Certificate in Film Scoring from UCLA. Gregg has been recognized twice as a Distinguished Arts Educator by the City of Huntington Beach. Many of his students and ensembles have received numerous accolades, scholarships, and awards. He is particularly proud of the many that have gone on to careers in music and education! His wife Sandy is the Instrumental Music Teacher at Costa Mesa High/Middle School.

The Oxford Academy Symphony Orchestra is one of the top performing groups at the school. Oxford is part of the Anaheim Union High School district and we are composed of students from the entire district. Students in the Symphony Orchestra are chosen by audition from our Chamber Strings and Wind Ensemble. The orchestra performs festivals as well as school and community events.

This will be the fourth year the group has performed in the Philharmonic Society’s High School Festival. It is certainly a highlight of the year for us. The Philharmonic Society members are amazing hosts and we are thrilled to perform on the same stage as Pacific Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Berlin Philharmonic; to name a few.

Today we are pleased to perform Mozart’s Magic Flute Overture and Danse Macabre. I like to program these two together because I think they both tell a story. Mozart actually wrote the Overture last for a ballet that tells timeless stories of revenge and finding true love. The composer of Danse Macabre has an almost comical way of portraying spirits that come out at night and go back into hiding during the day.

We are both pleased and honored to be a part of the event today. Many thanks to the people who put in countless hours to make this a great day for us.

The Mission Viejo High School Symphonic Orchestra is a collection of approximately 90 student musicians. The string players learn the music for this ensemble during class, while the wind players and percussionists audition for a spot in the group and rehearse outside the normal school day. This group has become known for performing the original arrangements of classic repertoire, and this year we are excited to perform Sibelius’ “Finlandia” and the first movement from Schubert’s “Symphony No. 8.” Over the years, the orchestra has had the opportunity to play at many festivals, making an effort to perform at the Philharmonic Society’s festival for the last number of years and the Saddleback Valley Unified School District Band and Orchestra Festival every year. Recently, the orchestra travelled to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall. This is Mr. Westphal’s second year with the program, and he is excited to be back at this festival with the orchestra to continue this tradition!

The Los Alamitos High School String program is comprised of StringOrchestra, Chamber Orchestra and small ensembles. These advanced andintermediate level performance groups focus on traditional, modern, andpopular orchestral literature. Each year the orchestra attends SCSBOAfestivals and regularly receives superior ratings. In June of 2018, the LAHSString Orchestra received the Gold Award of Recognition at the Los AngelesInternational Music Festival held at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

In an effort to expand their performance practices, members of the orchestraperform in the school musical pit orchestra and collaborate with the jazz bandand show choir on traditional and commercial literature. As ambassadors ofthe arts, students form their own small ensembles and perform for localnursing homes during the holidays.

The Los Alamitos String Program would like to extend its gratitude to thePhilharmonic Society for the opportunity to perform at Segerstrom Concert Hall for the 2019 High School Orchestra Festival.

Capistrano Valley High School’s Instrumental Music Program consists of three curricular String Ensembles, two curricular Concert Bands, Jazz Band, and California Stage Championships 2018 Grand Champion, Black & Gold Brigade. Students are assigned through curricular assessments, teacher recommendations, and entry auditions. Reoccurring playing assessments are required of all students in the CVHS Instrumental Music Program. Curricular ensembles at Capistrano Valley meet two days a week for a 104-minute block period, and Mondays for 48 minutes.

The ensemble performing this evening consists of students in grades 9-12. Each student must audition for placement into this ensemble yearly. This group performs regularly at school and community events, including, but not limited to, concerts, assemblies, and festivals. They have received standing ovations throughout Southern California, and were the featured orchestra at the 2013 California All-State Music Education Conference. Students in this ensemble are encouraged to study privately and perform outside of Capistrano Valley with community orchestra such as the Pacific Symphony Youth Symphony, Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble, and the Orange County Youth Symphony. The Capistrano Valley High School Instrumental Music Department would not thrive without the full support of the School Administration, Academic Advisors, Teachers, Maintenance Department, Parents, and IB Coordinator. These individual go above and beyond to provide all music students an opportunity to enroll and engage in music making at the highest level.

The Irvine High School Philharmonic is the top of three orchestras at Irvine High. We have been recognized multiple times as a Grammy Signature School. We strive to create the greatest artistic experience possible for our students. One area where this has been the case is with a piece we will perform for you this evening. Blue Mountain is a composition our Vaquero Instrumental Music Boosters commissioned for us in 2008. In speaking with Roger Przytulski (composer), we discussed the strengths and personality of our orchestra to help establish a rough framework. Next, he attended our rehearsals/performances and had conversation with our students. The result was the two movements you will hear tonight. The opportunity for our students to collaborate with the composer during this process was truly invaluable. In addition to this we have a guest artist perform along with our students ideally once in their four years at Irvine High. In addition to the rigorous core classes our students take, many members of our orchestra are in multiple performing arts classes and athletic teams as well. This is possible because of the culture and philosophy of our amazing school under the leadership of Dr. Monica Colunga. We are excited to be here this evening to participate in this festival.

The Beckman High School Orchestra under the direction of Jim Kollias was founded in August of 2004 when the high school first opened its doors and is one the largest high school orchestra programs in Orange County (170 students in 3 orchestras). Since then, the orchestra has experienced much success in its short history and has quickly earned acclaim as one of the finest orchestra programs in California. The orchestra has never earned less than a Superior rating at any festival it has performed. In less than 15 years, the orchestra has performed more than 70 works from the standard orchestral repertoire. Beckman High School made their Segerstrom Hall debut in 2014 as part of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County’s High School Invitational Orchestra Festival and has performed there every year since. In April 2019, the orchestra will be making their 7th appearance at Carnegie Hall at the New York International Band & Orchestra Festival. They made their Disney Hall debut in June 2012, earning a Gold Award for their performance at the Los Angeles International Music Festival and performed there again in 2016. In 2015 Beckman High School was recognized California Exemplary Arts Education Program for its musical excellence and in 2016, as a GRAMMY Signature School Semi-Finalist. Beckman High School is a California Distinguished School, a California Gold Ribbon School and a US News & World Report Gold High School.

San Juan Hills High School opened in 2007, and Dean McElroy has been the instrumental music director since its inception. Starting with just under 30 students, the program has blossomed to serve over 250 musicians in three string orchestras and two bands. The orchestra performing this evening is a combination of our advanced string orchestra and wind ensemble classes (hence the presence of non-traditional symphony instruments). Full orchestra literature is performed year-round, and in addition to the literature they will perform this evening, they also prepare a full array of string and wind literature to perform separately at all concerts and festivals as well. San Juan Hills has an incredible performance venue that boasts a professional orchestra pit. As a result, musicals have become a highlight at our school, and we perform two musicals per year. This January, we performed Little Women, and we will be performing Kiss Me Kate this spring. To give as many students an opportunity as we can, we rotate performances and use different combinations of students for each show. Last year, we won the JRAY Orchestra of the Year award for our performance of Les Misérables. More importantly we were able to offer this musical experience to 60 students! San Juan Hills also hosts a three-day festival in March through SCSBOA (Southern California School Bands and Orchestras Association), which will offer adjudication to 54 bands and orchestras. We would like to thank the Philharmonic Society of Orange County for hosting this incredible festival. This will be our fifth performance, and the venue, adjudication, and organization of all of the volunteers is nothing short of professional. This is the highlight of our season, and this opportunity inspires and brings out the best musicianship in our students.

The orchestra program at Aliso Niguel High School has received acclaim as being among the very finest orchestra programs in California, with past performances at local and state education conferences. In March 2012, in a performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall, the orchestra received the Gold Award at New York’s International Music Festival. For the past five years, they have been honored to perform at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and annually perform two concerts at the Soka Performing Arts Center.

The program is one of the largest and most extensive high school orchestra programs in California, consisting of five string orchestras classes and three full orchestras with over 300 participants. Students enjoy playing professional level orchestral literature and experience a higher level of musicianship in the orchestra program. All grade levels participate.

The program’s strength lies in the students and their various activities. In addition to participation in orchestra, most of the students are involved in other school activities and teams on campus including: CSF, academic decathlon, football, tennis, pep squad, swimming, water polo, track and field, soccer, golf, and basketball. Academically, many of the students rank in the top 10% of their class, and go on to attend the nation’s finest universities.
