Northeast residents, led by their electedofficials, came out en masse to protest amethadone clinic approved by the Stateand the City in the 7900 block of Frank-ford, across from a day care, a middleschool. and a Church. Leading the rallywere Democrats State RepresentativesKevin Boyle and Michael McGeehanand Bobby Henon, candidate for CityCouncil’s 6th District, and Republicanleaders Joe DeFelice and Ward leaderCris Vogler. Councilwoman Joan Kra-jewski was represented as was Sen. MikeStack, through his aide Ken Bode. Itwas an oddity and a pleasure to see thelocal leaders of both parties working intandem.

The crowd of 200 listened as MiltonMartelack introduced the leaders whohave already contacted the State Bureauof Drug and Alcohol Programs to with-hold the license from the protested site at7900 Frankford Avenue. They justifi-ably voiced their anger and dismay at thelack of transparency regarding theprocess used to determine the end-use ofthis vacant property. They are pressuringthe state not to approve its licensing.

Over the years, such efforts by the com-munities around this city have proven invain, since where ever you look there arenot only methadone clinics, but half wayhouses dotting the landscape. The citycontinues to use several, less organized, neighborhoods to distribute free needlesto junkies in a proven failed effort tostop the transmission of the HIV/AIDSvirus. Junkies, instead of using the newsterile needles gifted them by that cityprogram, which happens to be in viola-tion of state law, keep on using the old, contaminated needles. They’ve sold thenew needles to fellow junkies who havenot yet bottomed out to where it doesn’tmatter what they get, as long as it is thefix.

This effort by the community will suc-ceed. It is obvious Mayor Nutter shouldhave had a spokesman there assuring the

crowd the necessary city permits wouldbe withdrawn. That has been the mayorsprerogative since way back when.

Sen. Stack has demanded a state hearingand the community, rallying next Tues-day, July 26, at Lincoln High School, will demand no less.

The company, which has a slew of clin-ics to its credit, knew the location wouldbe easily accessible from various trans-portation hubs, since few, if any, junkieshave the means to own their own trans-portation. But they did not respect thefact they were located across from theHolmesburg Baptist Church and itsChristian Academy nor its principalLinda Lewis, with whom they did notconfer ahead of time.

We know the community will succeed. It’s one small victory. But we are losingthe community spirit that once mar-shaled many neighborhoods around thecity. We wonder what it will take to getthat spirit back into this city’s neighbor-hoods.
