Hasselt University is a young university, with a growing number of PhD students. This translates in a steap increase in the number of annually defended PhDs.

DEFENDED PhDs In an ever changing and globalised society, universities are in constant progress and development. Internationalisation has become a key aspect in the core business, mission and strategic development of Hasselt University. Hasselt University is an active hub in the global knowledge and innovation web. It works with universities, research centra, businesses and organisations worldwide. Being a university that warmly welcomes students and researchers from every continent, Hasselt University is also an international hub in the region. Hasselt University is keen to take Limburg hospitality to heart when international students, lecturers, and researchers, etc. join the university community. The percentage of international PhD students for example increased to 42% in 2018 (compared to 29% in 2010). To this end, an effective and unambiguous welcoming policy forms the basis for the reception and supporting national and international guests that join the university temporarily or permanently. Deeply embedded in the region, Hasselt University significantly values international networks. It is this international orientation and mobility of students, researchers and staff to which Hasselt University aspires. In its research policy Hasselt University also devotes attention to initiatives focused on scientific collaboration with developing countries (science sharing).

Partly due to this international focus of Hasselt University, the number of PhD students has been growing over the years. The importance of national and international cooperation is clearly reflected in the growing number of Joint PhDs. In 2018 17% of all ongoing PhDs at Hasselt University were Joint PhDs.

FUNDING FOR PhDs

Flanders Research Foundation (FWO)PhD fellowships for fundamental and strategic basic research

A PhD Fellowship fundamental or strategic basic (SB) research allows young researchers to prepare a PhD, and to develop into independent scientists with a critical mindset.

At the start of the fellowship, candidates must be holder of a diploma at least

equivalent to a master’s degree following a bachelor’s degree and awarded by the competent institutions in one of the countries of the European Economic Area or Switzerland.

More information:Contact: [email protected]: www.fwo.be/en/

Vacancies Hasselt University also publishes vacancies for PhD position on its website.

www.uhasselt.be/vacatures

Own funding It is also possible to do a PhD with your own funding or external funding.

Special Research Fund (BOF)The Special Research Fund (Bijzonder Onderzoeksfonds, BOF) is the university’s own research funding programme. BOF offers various types of PhD funding.

Doctoral Fund - The Hasselt University Doctoral Fund provides funding for PhD fellowships at Hasselt University.

BOF-BILA- The Bilateral Scientific Cooperation programme aims to encourage and strengthen international

university cooperation between UHasselt researchers and colleagues from partner countries through (joint) doctoral projects. The BILA programme finances research stays.

Civic PhDs- Within the Civic PhDs programme, it will be possible to collaborate with social or economic partners

such as Flemish, Belgian and international companies, NGOs, courts ... The aim of this programme is to lower the threshold of external actors to university research, and encouraging researchers to build sustainable partnerships with non-academic partners.
