DOUBLE CONCERTO FOR TWO GUITARS COMPOSED BY SÉRGIO ASSAD PHASES SÉRGIO & ODAIR ASSAD “THERE IS NO ONE LIKE THE ASSADS IN THE WORLD OF MUSIC FOR EITHER THE SCOPE OF THEIR INTERESTS OR THE DEPTH OR THE MUSICIANSHIP OR TECHNICAL ABILITIES.” SEATTLE POST T 212.584.7500 OPUS3ARTISTS.COM ARTISTS 3 assadbrothers.com INSTRUMENTALISTS WITH ORCHESTRA Sérgio Assad premiered his new concerto for two guitars with his brother Odair and the Seattle Symphony in February 2011. Regarded as one of the world’s most important composers of guitar music, Sérgio Assad’s groundbreaking Tahhia Li Oussoulina won him a Latin Grammy for Best Classical Composition in 2008. In 2010 he was nominated again for a concerto written for the LA Guitar Quartet and another piece for two guitars. Phases was written to reflect three distinct periods of SérgioAssad’s life as a musician and a composer. The first movement, “Recollections” reflects his dreams of a career in music while he was a young guitarist in Brazil. The second movement, “Old Portrait,” recalls his time living in Paris. “Resurgence,” the final movement, celebrates his current life in America with his wife, the renowned Astrophysicist Angela Olinto, to whom this concerto is dedicated. As with all of Sérgio’s works, this piece is at once virtuosic and sweeping, while emotionally engaging and full of exciting symphonic moments. The Assad Brothers have also appeared with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra with John Adams, conducting, The Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and on tour of the U.S with John Neshling and the São Paolo Orchestra. In 2015-2016 they toured with Yo-Yo Ma and other musicians from the Silk Road Ensemble. Their 50th Anniversary season was celebrated in 2015.
