Phases of Matter Everything on our plant 'Earth' is made of materials: Solids , Liquids and Gases . Different materials have different properties and can affect the jobs they are used for. The three different properties of these materials are changing shape, flowing and changing its volume .

Everything on our plant 'Earth' is made of materials: Solids, Liquids and Gases.

Different materials have different properties and can affect the jobs they are used for.

The three different properties of these materials are changing shape, flowing and

changing its volume.

Changing Shape Can the materials change their shape? • A liquid can change its shape

depending on the container it is poured into and depending on extreme temperature change

• Gases spread (expand)to fill the space they can reach.

• Solids do not change its shape but we can change its shape by either bending it, taking away from it or melting it.

Flowing

• – Can the materials flow? Liquids and gases can flow, whereas solids cannot flow.

Changing Volume

– Can the materials change their volume by being squeezed? -A liquid and a solid material don’t change very much in volume, but they can expand slightly when put under extreme temperatures (hot & cold).- The volume of a gas can be changed by squashing it.

What is a SOLID?

• Does not change shape easily• Will not allow another solid to pass through it

easily• Is usually visible• Has a definite shape• Has a definite size• When heated becomes a liquid• When cooled stays solid

What is a LIQUID?

• Changes shape easily (takes the shape of container)

• Will allow a solid to pass through easily

• Has a definite size (volume)

• When heated becomes a gas

• When cooled becomes solid

Examples of LIQUIDS

Gas . . . -Gases cannot be cut.

- Gases are hard to control. -Gases do not have a definite volume. -Gases fill any available space. -Gases flow easily. -Most gases are invisible and spread into open spaces. -Gases can easily be compressed.

• Oxygen

• Steam

• Carbon Dioxide

• Nitrogen

• Hydrogen
